For a long time I've thought myself to be a big fan of rpg's. But as I'm going through lists of all "the best", I wonder if the ones I have played and liked are just outliers, and were just borrowing elements from some other genre that would better suit my tastes. For example, every list seems to mention Divinity Original Sin and The Old Republic, but nothing in their descriptions about them sound appealing to me.

With this in mind, are there any games you could recommend for me?

Skyrim is probably more for your taste.

>tfw to intelligant too play old RPG games

Might and Magic 6
Jagged Alliance 2
Diablo 1

>the Old Republic
>on anyone's list of best RPGs

what the fuck?

Divinity OS is good unless you're primarily interested in RPGs for the story.

I assume he meant KotOR

which ones did you like retard?

Divine Divinity
Arx Fatalis

I'm getting into cRPGs, I've started BG1 but I'm not a big fan of it. My favorites are KotoR 2 and the NWN games. What games can you suggest with a lot of skill/ability score dialogue options, good UI and ideally good gameplay/story?

No, I've played Kotor 1 and 2, and loved them. It's the mmo that I'm talking about.

Hard to help since you said nothing about your preference. Only that divinity and OR don't sound appealing.

Which rpgs have you liked before?

The appeal of most of them is often characterisation/story or nailing a feeling of grand adventure that I imagine doesn't come across too well in description paragraphs

Age of Decadence, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Planescape: Torment, Vampire the masquerade, Arcanum: Steamworks

>I haven't played them, but I don't like it!

thanks mein freund, I played and loved Dragonfall, so I'll take a look at the other games you suggested

Link to list that has TOR as one of the best rpgs of all time.

I actually quite like that. I mean, it's hard to get into a game without any visual feedback, but I can get a lot of mileage out of written descriptions.

>MMO
>best of anything

What retarded list were you looking at?

I think a written description can work wonders combined with background art and music, and VA reading the paragraph like in Baldur's Gate

So, I'm confused. Did you play D:OS and KOTOR or not? If you only looked at their descriptions then you are simply a faggot.
If you want /v to help you, it may be a good idea to list some games you do like.

Hard to seperate the ones I liked from those I loved, but some ones I can say resonated with me are Witcher 1-3, Ultima 7, Fallout 1,2,NV, Mass Effect, Tyranny, Wasteland, , Neverwinter nights 2, Kotor 1-2, Dragon Age Origins & Inquisition.

Geneforge

>all western crpg are just variations of auto attack with cooldowns

Trash. All of them.

If you ignore the MP stuff and just do your single-player class missions, TOR is fun and literally just KoTOR 3

D:OS does sound and look rather generic, but gameplay is where it shines. That and humor and never taking it's self all that seriously. It's also the best transition of the old crpg style of movement and combat from isometric to true 3D that I've seen. It's very much enjoyable as someone new to the genre, hell for all I know it might be best enjoyed by newfags. Also has COOP with a fun system of choosing which player's dialogue choices to use.

Was dragonfall really good or just good compared to modern gaming?

D:OS had fun dialogue and great base gameplay, but I felt like it got let down by the level and encounter designers. Having multiple invincible enemies in a battle isn't fun, and the final boss was just a slog.

it had atmosphere out the ass, and cyberpunk is my weakness

it helped that there aren't many "actual" RPGs getting made these days

Planescape torment is the best written game ever made. Dragon quest 5 is great. I don't see the point in recommending mainstream games everyone has played like morrowind or fallout 3 but those are good

If you only look at the single player class missions, 1-50 is ok depending on class, and the rest is pretty much shit.

Me and my friends that played it had the opposite problem with the last boss, it was to easy.

play freedom force OP, it has tactical gameplay with a great story. There just isn't any dialogue choices.

the combat is watered down Xcom, the characters and story are legit

On tactician, I couldn't let my melee damage get near him because he'd just bite them to death in one round. I suppose I could have optimized for ranged damage.

>tyranny
>Inquisition
>kotor 1
I'm sorry. It's terminal.

>big fan of RPGs
>lists shit

Fuck off

etrian odyssey series
shin megami tensei series
gothic 3
wasteland 2
rune factory 3 & 4

>wasteland 2

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>wasteland 2

I kickstarted that game and I'm still mad at myself.

why

Is Might and Magic 6 worth playing if I liked the Grimrock games?

It's fucking shit m8

which RPGs have the best [Bluff] options?

>it's badly optimized while looking horrible (at release)
>a lot of the skills are unlock/disarm trap variants
>the rest are number buffs for weapons
>the combat is terrible, melee enemies close the gap at 2-3 the speed of your melee guys

Also the cloth map was made out of polyester

>Graphics
>RPG
KeK this kid

Divinity was great for the first 2/3 of the game. The last 1/3 was steadily declined for me. By the time I was at the end I was extremely bored.

Still a good purchase though.

Yes.
I would also try some of the earlier M&Ms, particularly 4-5. 6 is in "real time" the way Grimrock is (though it can be toggled to turn based), while the prior games are purely turn-based.

Yeah I was really disappointed in it. The combat just sucked so much. Developers need to realize that half the fun is having cool options in combat, not just a number that goes up over time.

Its nothing like the grimrock games but you should play MM6 anyways. If you want something like grimrock, check out Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2, and Lands of Lore.

>wasteland 2

oh shit!!!!

Yes if you like exploring and dungeons

I know what I'm playing next.

I bought Dragonfall on sale and it kinda sucks. The ruleset is really watered down and the combat isn't fun. Didn't care for the story either.

Well I technically got it for free, so I'm not fretting too much if it doesn't turn out that great.

Fair enough. It's not painfully bad so you'll get some enjoyment out of it.

Is Hong Kong any better?

I heard the first game was complete shyte

Didn't play it sorry.

gameplay mechanics are the same as Dragonfall. Story and characters are different but comparable to Dragonfall in terms of quality

I think that Dragonfall is best while Hong Kong is good but has a few issues for me

basically, Dragonfall has a nice group of companions, some of which have good companion missions, and a decent story hook that gives you room to do shadowrunning jobs how you see fit. There are usually various ways to complete each mission, though the quality varies from mission to mission. Has some weird gameplay quirks but the foundation is ok, XCOM-lite with magic. Worldbuilding is on point.

In short, it depends on how much you love Cyberpunk (with fantasy mixed in) and how important good atmosphere is to you

>or nailing a feeling of grand adventure
This, and it's kinda hard to put in a description of the game.

Game engine looks outdated but allows for TONS of enemies to be present at the same time, andI mean it: TONS.
Like fucking skeleton armies, swarms of dragons in the sky and things like that.
But at the same time you can do things like flying up in the sky raining meteor showers and spells on enemies.
Oh and there's a spell that once uttered allows you to DECIMATE the entire country you're playing in, purging all life from all villages.

Also some of the best dungeons I've ever had the pleasure to crawl through.

>tfw getting to might and magic 7 and the dungeons are all tiny as shit
WHY

>tfw getting to might and magic 9 and you can't even fly

>tfw a modern might and magic game is easier now than ever to create with all the texture streaming and LOD shit we have now
>nobody has tried making one
