It's a final fantasy game so yes it fucking is.
I love XV a lot, but this single cutscene blows most of it out of the water in presentation, music and Cinematography.

I'm not even sure what a Final Fantasy game is anymore. You have callbacks to older games, but there's nothing thematic that ties them together as a franchise.

Story/direction in XV is just disappointing, so I guess that's a departure from some of the better games in the series

Spoilers ahead, I got a theory working:

It doesn't feel like a normal JRPG. It's just that split from open world to linear.

well, after 55 hours i am done with the game, it was pretty alright

I'd say it's fair if it holds up on its own merit, which the 3.0 story does.
That, but also when the music lines up with specific parts of boss rotations due to set rotations, like Nidhogg uses Akh Morn during rising chorus, Brute Justice takes off when the refrain kicks in etc.

It was a very tragic game, which is why I think a lot of people have a hard time accepting it as FF. FF is no stranger to drama, but none before afaik have been this completely and totally bleak.

Also, add poor exposition in chapter 13, and a mediocre chapter 14 from a gameplay perspective. Said it before, and I'll say it again: no exploration in World of Ruin when all they have to do is shut off the lights, add some debris and demons, and some quests. Coming home to Insomnia feels hollow since we have zero emotional attachment to the city. We only see it in Kingsglaive. The tutorial or something should've taken place in the city. Maybe training with Gladio or driving from the Citadel out of the city, then having a fade to black and starting back up with pushing the car? Maybe a failed attempt to reclaim the city after Titan and Ramuh?

As it stands, the homecoming was incredibly underwhelming; a cheap feeling at best, since we have no attachment to Insomnia. Doesn't help that the city itself was mediocre from a design perspective. Oh boy, two tiny above ground areas and a subway before the final bosses. Sure does scream "epic" to me.

I love the game to bits, which is why it kills me that chapter 13 and 14 are done so poorly. Telling important story elements via a few lines of text you find lying about is lazy, as is making the goal of most of the game (the reclamation of the Crown City) one of the smallest areas of the game, and giving us no chance to become attached to it prior to seeing it completely destroyed and inhabited by demons.

Did Aranea and Noctis even acknowledge that they fought each other at the Niflheim base? It was extremely awkward to go from the encounter the previous night to her helping the boys the next day. I must've missed something right?

It only happened to me once but Aranea helped me out with some daemons at night.

Also, I truly think that XIV has better hunts then XV, even if you zerg them with a million people, they had a sense of rareness to them, that XV's just don't have.

I can't get back into XIV. It's objectively a decent MMO. It's also one of those games where once you get past the honeymoon phase you look at what you actually did at the end of each play session and you begin to actively hate yourself.

The combat only works with certain encounters.

You're absolutely fucked against anything that messes around with your camera, anything in tight spaces, or large groups of enemies.
