To a kid, everything in the game is a secret way to unlock Luigi or some shit. Even obvious jokes like "You deserve a Ghoul Medal" have people searching over the entire level for a "Ghoul Medal". Nintendo couldn't possibly predict that children on internet message boards would read so deeply into an innocuous texture.
