I always consider the combination of PW, GZ and TPP to be MGS5 since all games, are stand a lone, in a sense, while GZ and TPP are a direct sequel to PW and they were developed thinking of sequels, unlike the others.

In fact, I don't think we'll ever see him stuck in a franchise ever again, first it'll be Death Stranding, and then he'll do a completely different game.

And 3, and 4. Peace Walker was the only recent one that was meant to have a follow up. ground zeroes and phantom pain are two parts to the same game, so ground zeroes does not count

well the game had a troubled development cycle. There was supposed to be a lot more to the game, but konami wanted him gone so they forced kojima to shit the game out as fast as possible while also hindering his ability to effectively communicate to his team. Kojima did what he could, and he tried to deliver, but he fell flat. But he just keeps moving forward, and free from the konami grasp he is able to do his own thing now.

I mean, kojima was originally going to work on it, and it was originally going to be metal gear solid: rising. It was supposed to take place between 2 and 4. But then somewhere along the line he handed it off to kamiya and platinum and became pretty hands off. With that it became a spinoff as metal gear rising: revengeance, and they set it after everything kojima did so as not to fuck up his canon. It was a smart move. But the final product that was delivered is not mgs5.

That being said I've enjoyed every MGS game I've played, including 5, because of their gameplay. Plot fags can die in the irrelevancy Kojima condemned you to.

kojima has wanted to stop doing metal gear since mgs2. Overall the plot is a mess, and the baggage of being in the same continuity as the other games muddies up his messages, but he tries. And the fact that he does more than most games and their "look you're an action hero! look at all these bombastic explosions and shit!" that may or may not be spattered with pandering that is thinly veiled as "social justice" when most are so far in to corporate crowd pleasing they will put whatever in it that will get people to buy it without truly understanding the social justice issues or trying to make commentary or have their own voice.
