Mecha games

Is this game better than Gunhound EX? I got the latter instead when I wanted to try one of these 2D mech sidescrollers during a Steam sale because I didn't like Gigantic Army's art direction; while it was definitely pretty worthwhile & fun for the tiny price I got it for, I was disappointed by the fact that it was pretty easy to beat AND it didn't try to be "easy to play, hard to master" by encouraging score competitiveness (no replays, no global rankings, all you can do is Fraps)

Maybe despite being uglier Gigantic Army has better gameplay?

Also ITT talk about mecha games

Also I'm emulating Night Slave which is technically a porn game but has actually-pretty-good gameplay in this 2D sidescroller sub-genre and it's pretty good so far

Plus most of the porn CGs are yuri and that appeals to me

I also tried Leynos 2 on Saturn and wasn't really a huge fan of the way it controlled with the whole zoom in/zoom out thing + it emulated like shit and I don't have a Saturn

Lastly, any opinions on the SNES ones like Assault Suit Valken/Cybernator & Metal Warriors? I downloaded the translated rom of the Japanese version that doesn't have a bunch of content edited out but I've not played it yet.

I don't think old school mech games were worth a damn much until the early days of Front Mission IMO.

I dug the old mech games but non of them really popped besides Front Mission, and then shit like Xenogears, Armored Core, Mechwarrior & the early Dreamcast Gundam entries. (Never got to play Heavy Gear or Steel Battalion)

Which is a damn shame overall. Especially considering most of them are outright dead or rotting corpses of their former selves.

Cybernator was good, but I prefered Metal Warrios & That other mech game that was a proper Side Scrolling RPG on the SNES. I can't remember it's fucking name.

As for Metal Warriors, all I can say from the brief gameplay footage I saw is that it looks significantly more colorful than the gritty standard for these games

>That other mech game that was a proper Side Scrolling RPG on the SNES. I can't remember it's fucking name.
Gunhazard?

mech games don't sell.

Who cares? Some of my favorite Steam games have less sales than that.

As for Transformers I assume most people bought that on consoles.

>Is this game better than Gunhound EX?

Absolutely.

>(no replays,

but it does have replays.

> I didn't like Gigantic Army's art direction;

Keep in mind it's a 6 dollar game from a studio that does games in their spare time, rather than a 60 dollar game by a professional studio. So it lacks polish. The main mech sprite is GORGEOUS. Many of the other mechs look nice. Some of the backgrounds are pretty bad looking though.

They also use "paper cut out" style animation as much as possible, rather than make proper animations. This is due to budget reasons and small team size mostly.

I got Metal Warriors as a kid. I bought it because the robot on the cover looked cool. It's a great game. It heavily emulates mech anime and Assault Suit Valken, although it's made by Lucas Arts, a Western studio.

Assault Suit Valken I got as an adult, about a decade ago when I was getting into snes games again. bought it from a store. Didn't know anything about it. Really liked it.

Another one to check out is Front Mission: Gun Hazard.

>Metal Warriors was developed by Americans
Holy crap really? Some of the mech designs are really convincingly anime-like.
>but it does have replays.
I meant Gunhound, not Gigantic Army.

I meant the overall muddy 'so gritty' art direction mostly; the Flash tween animation doesn't bother me because it looks robotic and, well, it's a game about robots.

But if Gigantic Army has replays then fuck it, I'm getting it.

God dammit I didn't read your post when I made mine.

But yeah I would never have guessed, I actually thought Wikipedia may have gotten the dev/publisher wrong but the credits are only made up of western names.

The best way to sum up Metal Warriors is "What happens Lucasarts folks played a fuckload of Cybernator" In some respects. It is arguably better.

They're both good for different reasons. Gunhound basically requires a controller though and has much less replay value. If you have to get only one get GA.

There's also Assault Suit Leynos, the remake. If you want ugly art styles, this is it. I much, MUCH prefer Gigantic Army. Astro Port makes their games in 480 resolution, and it better emulates the style of old pixel art. It's just a bit cheap at times in animations. But ASL is the modern digital drawing style, much like animation. It looks plastic and sharp, which always looks weird to me. Then for explosions and attacks they use 3D effects which always look super cheap, instead of proper sprites.

HD 2D games have never looked right to me.

It's why there are so few of them

Metal Warriors is published by Konami. I suspect that Konami got them to make a Assalt Suit style game. It's my favorite game by Lucasarts by far.

I already decided to get Gigantic Army as soon as I heard it has replays to be honest.
>HD 2D games have never looked right to me.
I think Lab Zero are fags but Skullgirls looks nice

The Wii Wario platform game looks good

Leynos remake isn't straight up visually BAD but something does certainly look off

>I think Lab Zero are fags but Skullgirls looks nice
>The Wii Wario platform game looks good

It's the same sort of thing. Very sharp edges, often very cartoony with black outlines. I don't like it. Skullgirls also has terrible character designs and art style on top of that.

I guess we just have very different aesthetic sense; my main issue with the Leynos remake is how muddy itlooks.

The 80s anime-ass character portraits in Valken are nice, too bad the localizers removed them.

Astro Port makes some nice games, although they're cheap and lacking polish. If you get them during a sale they're like 3 dollars so it's worth it.

I also recommend buying Satazius, Wolflame and their upcoming Zengeki Warp game. Avoid the others, as they're kind of practice games that shouldn't even be on steam at all.

>too bad the localizers removed them.

This was before the anime boom of the 90's and it became more mainstream. Localizers were terrified of Japanese art styles and did everything to remove them or change them. Occasionally it results in something great like power Blade, but most of the time the changes are a detriment.

The portraits in ASL remake are terrible. Worse is how they're animated. They open and close their mouths robotically. It's ridiculous looking. They should have just used still portraits.

Night Slave is really good. The ending is really depressing though. There's an Idolmaster mod that switches the CG events, kinda cute.

If you liked Night Slave try DEDENDEN too.

Steel Strider is great as well.

Also Ranger X but you probably knew about it.

/m/ threads every day now. The thirst is real indeed.

The funny part is even though the anime art still pops in the ending. It also shows in the options menu.

Probably too much effort to remove.

Correct. Though it's very very rare for a westernized localization to be better known(And considered better) then it's Jap counterpart.

>Though it's very very rare for a westernized localization to be better known(And considered better) then it's Jap counterpart.

The two examples I can think of are Power Blade, which changed a lame mega man game into a better game about a Terminator style guy. And Shatter Hand, which is a localization of some Japanese show.

>avoid Steel Strider

Nah m8. You and me are gonna fight over that.

You can throw Decap Attack into the list. Nobody has ever given a shit over it's original Japan version.

>Avoid the others
Vulkaizer was pretty cool.
youtube.com/watch?v=SlGceWI695s

It's okay, and a neat concept of building a game around mouse+keyboard controls. But it's nowhere near as good as Gigantic Army.

Who is even supposed to be the character piloting the mech in Night Slave? I don't understand moonrunes at all.

2D mech platformers worth playing:

>Metal Warriors
>Assault Suits Valken
>Gunhound
>Gigantic Army
>Front Mission: Gun Hazard
>Assault suit Leynos 2
>Assault Suit Leynos (remake)

There's others but I haven't found them worth my time.

The brown short haired girl in this pic

I'd be willing to argue against that, as since you have better control of your mech, the game can be more difficult and throw more attacks at you as well as have you navigate around bigger worlds. It's also at least twice as long, has better weapon variety, better boss variety, and dare I say it, even the story is cooler.

Here's Satazius.

>as since you have better control of your mech,

It's too agile, so it doesn't feel like a mech at all. It feels more like a human with a gun who runs weird. And the animations look very stiff.

On the topic of mecha shmups you guys should check out Astebreed if you haven't already.

>It's too agile, so it doesn't feel like a mech at all
That's because, size-wise, it's more like an enhanced power armor. Especially when you compare it to the size of the GMR-Saladin which is at leas twice its height.

Having grown up with Armored Core, I don't mind my mechs being agile.

I'm not sure if I'd even call it a shmup as it has elements from other games like Sin & Punishment but yeah Astebreed is fantastic and what I had in mind when I said "easy to beat, hard to master" in the OP. I've not managed to 1CC hard mode yet, the final boss always kicks my ass.

Decent game, but I had to mute it because I could not stand the anime characters. Drove me crazy the first time around hearing them shriek like monkeys every 5 seconds. It was Kid Icarus: Uprising all over again.

A game is obviously good when your biggest complaint is something that can be turned off.

I personally liked the talking and feel the game would be worse without it; I feel the same about Starfox 64 even if it can get annoying. I know it's an unpopular opinion but it makes the experience feel more immersive to me.

shit gaem.

It works in some games. Me personally, the less story there is, the better the game is. I'm an old arcade fan as you can tell.

Extremely in-depth criticism.

Only worth it if you play for score, otherwise it's dull as fuck. Get Alltynex Second instead

It really isn't bad. It's a decent shump. There's better yeah but still.

Since mechs and stg's overlap, I recommend buying Daruisburst. It has SO MUCH content.

>55 dollar price tag

A bit costly. Wait until the sale and it's 50% off. It's totally worth 30 dollars.

Anyone ever play Stardust Galaxy Warriors? I thought it was a nice little game, and apparently the devs are total bros. They're Yacht Club tier.

>fan says he enjoys the game, but has one hand disabled
>talks about this in the comments
>Devs overhear it
>they add a mode that lets you play with the mouse specifically

thought that was nice.

I wouldn't judge it as a 'shmup' as much as just... an arcadey game; and yes I know that's a wide description. It's the closest to a shmup but the projectile avoidance & attack methods just feel so different from a game like Darius or Mushihimesama or something that it feels wrong to compare it directly to those games.

>shmup

This is the worst word ever. Just call it STG. That's what the Nipponese call them. They even use the English word and acronym. It's not a translation.

That's a very narrow-minded view of what shmups are. Games like Cybattler, Alltynex Second, Strania all had a similar feel for example

>shmups is bad
>one letter away from STD is not
How about you fuck off

I love that game but
>It has SO MUCH content.
this is misleading because a lot of that content is recycled; CS Mode a lot like a "triple-A" game in that regard and less like just a longer version of a short yet super-varied arcade game.

It's still very well designed and fun, but I'd recommend trying out Gaiden and G first. Well, moreso Gaiden because G is fucking insanely hard and I can barely play it.

On the other hand Chronicle Saviours mode has the best learning curve I've seen in any shmup. So I dunno, it's kind of a contrast between the extremely beginner-friendly difficulty curve and a price that generally only turboautists will be ok with.

I'm sure the price will go down during the holiday season though so just wait.

"shmup" is a terrible sound. Like schmuck. Makes me think of mud. Or lips making that sound. Grimy gross shit.

I guess? You might have a point. I liked the melee attacks feature and such.

Shmup is stuck in my head. I can't imagine using another term just as easily.

Must be because of your language because both shmup and shmuck sound amusing in almost a cute way to me

I think the dash & melee attacks, the bullet deflection and the use of 3D space make it a bit too different. I'm admit I've not played most of the games you mentioned but Strania definitely feels like a shmup.

Cybattler has melee attacks and most of its gameplay is basically hugging enemies and slashing them with your sword. Alltynex Second plays so much like Astebreed that I wouldn't be surprised if its the game's primary influence, it has a bullet removing melee attack, a special attack and homing shots.

I've tried a few of Astro Port's games and found them all rather dull and they blend together. I certainly thought Gunhound EX was a lot better.
Nothing has really come close to the quality of Assault Suits Valken, sadly. Though I haven't tried the Leynos remake yet since I find the flashy SFX-ridden art style of it quite ugly.

Bullshit, Gigantic Army easily surpasses ASV in terms of gameplay. No idea how you could prefer ASV unless you primarily care more about presentation

Hey guys what's going on?

>Night Slave (ナイト・スレイブ) is an eroge run & gun role-playing shooter game
Fuck, for a second I thought it was a different eroge mecha shooter I've been looking for for years, but no dice. The one I was thinking of was top-down in style, kind of like Guwange but much less of a shmup style game, and was in 3D. I've never been able to find it again after coming across it in the mid 2000s.

I found Gunhound to be really boring, and I HATE how you have to grind points to unlock weapons.

>Cybattler
>Alltynex Second
Thanks for recommendations, these really flew under my radar.

Obligatory Musha Aleste mention.

Also Imperium.

About to download Mechwarrior 3 and Mechwarrior 4. Anything I should know going into it?

Play Android assault for the Sega CD. If you're looking for those kind of games.

>Double-tap dashing

>monmusu

dude, are you a marketor? lol

>Deflecting to the reaction image instead of the argument
Good thing I didn't post pic related.

No I'm a playor. I wish I got paid for shilling games I genuinely enjoy on here

ACfag is that you?

It's fine.

Gigantic army is too short. needs a more fleshed out sequel. They should do a crowd sourcing.

Why does that in particular trigger your autism?

Oh man, the multiplayer for this game was fucking fantastic.

>this 6 dollar arcade game is too short

Nice games ITT. We should remaster pic related for /m/ vidya recommendations.

Maybe have separate pics for different eras and franchise so it's not a clusterfuck.

Because it's a terrible and imprecise control method that should never be used in favour of a dedicated button.

How long should it be in your opinion?

I've never had trouble with it.
Arcadey games where you can compete for score absolutely should be short or else having to start over would be hellish.

Yeah that's what I'm worried about when it comes to people bitching that the game's too short. That they're looking at it as a just another modern game that you play once and never touch again rather than an arcade game that's meant to be replayed a lot until you get a 1cc or a decent score. In that context its length is perfectly fine. Maybe an additional 5-10 minutes wouldn't hurt, but yeah.

That list doesn't have any battletech games like Mechwarrior or MechCommander.

It's listed as a series, middle category like 3rd from top.

Franchises are in the second column, there's Battletech on it up top. Yeah, it's a clusterfuck.

It's there. Just look a bit harder,

List is a mess though.

that's where Steel Strider came in. It's twice as long and ties into the story.

What happens at the ending?

It's almost always that. The top-rated Steam review for Astebreed was by some goony bearded PCfag who complained about the "campaign" being too short and called the enemies "mobs". He never even considered scoring once.

The only reason it's not there anymore is because he wanted to get rid of my comment (initially he deleted it but I just reposted).

There is also this cancerous Youtube video reviewer that covers every single Steam game that comes out mere hours after it's added for a quick buck who always complain about length and "lack of replayability" in shmups. He literally said Eschatos has "zero replayability".

totally different game. no skating.

>who always complain about length and "lack of replayability" in shmups. He literally said Eschatos has "zero replayability".
wew lad, got a link? I could use someone to hate right after waking up

I've heard that game's name pop up some times before, is it hard to emulate and is it translated or am I gonna have to sift through moonrunes?

Not namedropping but his videos are usually the first thing that pops up when you search "[game] review" for more obscure shmups like Eschatos.
>Would you rather them write long walls of rambling text discussing the game indepth?
Yes, being a little too wordy is preferable to fundamentally misunderstanding the genre.
>that review
>"too long and rambly"
Lol

The big bad transforms into a monstrosity as the final boss after shooting and killing the blue-haired anti-hero lady on the cover . The girlfriend of the MC (orange long hair) gets put into a shuttle so she can escape because she can't fight after days of futa rape tortures and you stay on the space base to fight. Comrades side characters that appeared in first few levels (three girls that had a beach orgy) join the battle but they die midway through and their mechs turn red and fight against you. Once you defeat all of that the base explodes and you see the gf's shuttle escaping on time while the cockpit of the destroyed MC mech drifts in space. Very grim.
