I have neither played any of the games of that franchise nor do I usually play games of that specific genre. But for some strange reason I am looking really forward to this game.

I think I could stomach pushing through Drakengard 3 but I'm pretty wary of going through the time and trouble of playing the original Drakengard.

Platinum involvement has me worried. I remember what they did to Metal gear. I liked Nier for it's story and characters, and didn't mind that the combat was subpar or that there were long stretches of game without it. I can only hope this one holds up for Automata, and it isn't reduced to just another platinum hack and slash, style over substance thing.

Interested in DOD because of its relevance to Nier if nothing else.

And interested in both because I'm pretty convinced even with my limited knowledge that the first if not both will be relevant to Automata, at the very least in call backs that will improve the experience (if not more). First hand knowledge of the original Drakengard will surely be a benefit and be relevant given we've even seen this symbol in recent Automata stuff.

Nier Automata is a case of a sequel being developed by someone else because the previous development company was never really considered all that great at actually making games (even though I think Nier is perfectly serviceable from a gameplay perspective and its lack of quality is seriously overblown). Said development company also literally doesn't even actually exist anymore, and Yoko Taro is still the writer and chief creative influence whereas Kojima really was not in MGR's case. When major changes were facilitated by the circumstances, Etsu Tamari rewrote the story for Rising in 2 months (original script for Rising took 10 months).

These are pretty radically different scenarios, I wouldn't worry too much.

All of the figures that were responsible for the qualities that were so lauded about Nier are back for Automata. The most bemoaned aspect, the clunky action RPG gameplay, is in what I would argue are the most capable hands at Platinum. They have fucking Atsushi Inaba.

I kind of suspect most people who say it was extremely boring and dull didn't manage to persevere to reach any meaningful point in the narrative. Not making a "FF13 is good if you play it for 30 hours" argument either. Kind of feels like you get there in a fraction of a fraction of the time but still just a little too far in, it seems.

Because I've seen multiple cases of people who weren't captivated in the first few minutes persevering or being encouraged to keep going end up saying some variation of "Wow this is crazy/awesome!" when they've given themselves the opportunity to reach one of the multiple events in the game that have the potential to grab hold of them if the game failed to do so from the very start.

There's no doubt Taro will deliver a crazy story and Okabe will make another amazing soundtrack.

Even if the gameplay was just a Metal Gear Rising with bullet hell elements slapped on it, it would still easily make its way into my personal Top 5.

However, they revealed that enemies can drop chip sets which you can equip that upgrade 2B or add stuff like expanded info on the HUD or even just makes enemies do silly voices upon dying.

So I think the gameplay will end up suprising everyone, but we will find out once the demo releases on the 22nd.

This game is gonna be one of the great ones, I can feel it.

Granted I haven't played the game, but from what we've seen of it so far, the western box art seems like it's a more honest representation of what the game actually is
