What is worth paying for is official support, extra services (like Xpadder's template database for example), and of course just showing love for the program. Things that actually add value that users care about.

games are currently priced as if everyone on earth needed to eat them. that aint right.

I think piracy is fair in some cases, for instance if you need educational tools but can't afford the ridiculous $600-900 price tag and with games, if you didn't plan on buying them anyway/truly can't afford it might as well pirate (or just wait til it's insanely low in price a year or two later).

At the same time, a lot of the devs truly do need the support so if you enjoy the game enough (or love the company) then fork out the cash man. I support Platinum Games as much as I can, hell I bought MGR twice (Once on PS3, once on PC). Being an artist and talking to people in the industry, I've seen how much work goes into games and that's just from the 2d design/illustration phase of development... that doesn't include writing and orchestrating the music, writing the script, designing the gameplay, programming it, etc. Support the ones you truly love at the least.

Relative to inflation, game prices (at least in the US) are quite low. I attached an image to show this, albeit the consoles were cheaper. Somebody does need to survive off the money made on video games, the people who develop and publish these games need it. It's just like musicians and record labels, artists, etc.
