What wrong with universal currency?
globalism doesn't work
>Game uses a non conventional money sources
>its off putting and the majority of the player base feels like its a needless over complication

Will games set in the present now be set in the past in the future?

If you don't understand why Fallout uses bottlecaps, you don't understand Fallout.
...
What the fuck does Gil look like?
Path of Exile did it right desu
I was referring to the future
The dollar is pretty much a universal currency and has been for a while
Underrated.
This is the worst offender.
Its literallly
>we couldn't or didn't want to think up an interesting progression system for the game, so grind for not-money and buy yourself upgrades.
and then we go soulsgame specific
>oops we ditched on the interesting progression system and now its too simple, lets add a unique second rare type of not-money that we only give you when we feel like you progressed enough
>getting triggered by currency
wow, and I thought tumblr was sensitive
The dollar is weak as fuck and used by a small fraction of the world, the Euro is an actual attempt of a universal currency and is actually growing, both in value and number of countries that use it.
That's even stupider then
What would you prefer then?

I would prefer that actually
This is a legitimate question.

>game set in simulation

literally what
Both MMOs show us a gil; XIV on the left, XI on the right.
Other than that? Beats me.
Name one (1) game that does this.
Literally none, I was just making a joke. Having universal currencies in games makes sense because no one wants to fuck around and exchange currencies every time they move around. It makes sense in some games too, where massive empires have taken over, they would use a standardized currency.
Are there any grand strategy games that use actual currency values?
Paradox is a bunch of hacks so they just use some lame universal currency like "ducats" or "florins"
ubpoated.
>gold and silver gil
lol wut
>future
>curency differs in distant systems. Your Zorkmids in this system are worth the material they're made of, but can be used as actual currency in another
>implying this would be even remotely popular and wouldn't be seen as more needless complication and padding as you're zipping back and forth from the spacebanks getting your currency converted
bartering is good though
Honestly Metro's bullets as currency makes the most sense out of all the post apocalyptic settings I've seen
Was just thinking about this; in FFXI, we eventually travel to the past, before the nations came together and started minting gil. Thus, nobody in the past actually accepts gil.... except for Goblins, whom say the shiny-shinies still have value to them. Then back in our present day, we have 'counterfit gil' that was perpetuated by Goblins...
>game set in JRPG
>currency: Zeny
In South Park The Stick of Truth, you briefly go to canada and have to exchange your money in order to use it there.
But it IS an interesting progression system.
>third world setting
>millions of dollars are worth nothing compared to actual countries
or
>broke and starving to death
I think it's meant to be a reversible coin, gold on one side, silver on the other. Some of the other 'ancient' currencies in XI also mention what's painted on each side.
>game set in America
>Currency: burgers
>game set in OP's house
>currency: goodboy points and dildos

Yeah my neurons are firing at alarming rates.
souls progression is saved by its weapon/armor system.
That's an interesting concept, and it's neat that they did that, but it's just a one time thing done for a bit of a nod toward realism/continuity.

You think fuckers want to run around with 1000000000 coins? Its implying there are different dominations of gil for variable amounts of value. There is also other currency in the game from different countries, so it makes sense that you would use gold and silver to make currency exchange easier since rare metals have constant value.

Fantastic
Isn't credits the most likely unit of future currency? We already do most of our transaction-keeping with electronic credits and debits, it's not uncommon for me to go 6-8 months at a time without ever touching a piece of paper money
zen/zen/zenself
FPBP
>currency is dinar
Caps were pretty well justified. Bottlecaps are hard to make in the postapocalypse without proper machinery. They were also pushed hard by water traders who backed it up with water (a scarce resource).
Pay attention to the game, sperg.
I'd wager currencies would be several, as it usually is - lunch money, hoppers/action figures/what is hot then. Money being the backup currency.
>credits are the most likely unit of currency
nah mate, most likely unit of currency in the future is food and drinkable water. Maybe medicine. So yeah, bartering
Where the fuck have you been the last 20 years, it's pretty evident it works.

Groovy.
I like that, though
I like any game using the correct currency
there won't ever be a game set in old England where you gotta use thrupney bits and the like
I like the idea of bartering but couldn't imagine it working well with NPCs

>mesos
>Game set in current day Ukraine
>They use rubles
In business terms it is. All companies the world over, as long as they market to the world, track everything in dollars.
PoE doesn't barter. Players trade in currency and vendors give you currency for your items. No one trades items for items
What do Pokebucks look like?
4/5s is not a small fraction
you can use the identification/teleportation scroll or whatever other fancy item you have or you can trade it.
Can't use dollar to identify a berry or coin to teleport to town.
I was kind of half-assed referencing the webcomic Paranatural, which takes place in part in a middle school. One of the teachers hands out stars, which students can trade for items at a school store.
Lots of schools have some time of merit point system, where you can trade for scooters and games and shit. Makes sense students would use these as a currency.
Kinda would like to see a game based on that comic, it's pretty fuckin great.

Would you honestly want it this way, OP?
Secret of Evermore had different currencies for each of the different regions. You had to exchange them up or down to use the shops in that area.
it's not set in current day, it's set in not so distant future.
Yes
not op but i do at least

I always kind of thought it was on a credit system, all virtual/digital currency with no physical form.
Like, everybody is issued an ID card from birth, and that's tied to your bank account or whatever.

i don't actually play fallout, but shit doesn't seem that complex if you care enough about muh immersion to care about the validity of bottle caps as currency
>post-post apocalypse setting
What.
I mean if you ever need to farm out souls literally just to level your stats you're pretty shit tho.
I don't remember any point in all 3 dark souls games (haven't played DeS or BB) where I felt understatted for the next area and needed to actively stop and farm. Only time I had to do that was getting greedy about wanting to use X spell/weapon RIGHT NOW instead of after the next boss
>tfw this guy lost because some asshole took a picture of him eating a sandwich
>the boys are like gold pieces and the girls are like copper
Hah.
Now i must buy burger for lunch
Didn't say it forces it on you, or that its tedious or anything, theres nothing bad about it except that its not interesting, its just money for stats, was okay the first time but now its just the original laziness barren and visible.
