Then RAV>RAV>RAV switch to COM>RAV>RAV if stagger is dropping too fast
RAV>RAV>RAV until I get around 500%
COM>RAV>RAV until 700%
then COM>COM>COM at 800 to 900%

You can choose the default option, the game asks you to pick which menu button the game defaults to in combat

Because the combat isn't based around selecting individual abilities, it's based around paradigm shifts and changing your loadout of abilities. You shouldn't ignore it as there's generally no reason to manually select abilities over having the AI do it for you, but there's still tons of strategy involved in shifting often and at the right times (and having the right paradigms set up in the first place).

You are correct that the game is impossible without changing Paradigms. I've tried it and couldn't get past Gapra Whitewood.

It would be a touch more engaging if the system itself was designed around choosing the actions yourself, rather than dictating from what pools of abilities the party can automatically draw from. Yes, you can definitely choose your own action queue manually, but it's a direct disadvantage to hammering the auto-battle button, and the game is balanced this way.

For the crux of the system, they sure are horribly designed. I'm pretty sure sentinel only exists for the sole purpose of having tank busters and high-damage phases to force paradigm shifting.

Imperil and the unique nature of Sazh's Blitz is what allow that to be possible.

It always amazed me that XIII could look so fucking deep and complex, but when you sit down to play, it's all just flashy camera angles and big-looking numbers.
Deep down, I wanted it to be good. We don't have many big-budget techno-futuristic fantasy RPGs with roots in religious mythology anymore, now that the only SMT presence on consoles is strictly Persona.

Well yes, that's how many games with a tank class balance their encounters. XIII-2 had much better combat than XIII though. The variety of abilities and Feral Links made it much more fun to play.

Sazh's Blitz is counted as two normal attacks which makes him OP versus huge immobile enemies like Barthandelus. Once Hope learns Haste he becomes the worst of the main cast though.

I don't know about the "sazh method", but he is the first character that can get haste and that's great

I unironically love FF13's combat. I think it's really engaging and love the emphasis on per-battle strategy over inter-battle strategy.

I agree. It's one of the only FFs that actually try to kill you. Because it gives the reset option it's not afraid to have genuinely tough encounters.
