it completely saved Nier and made the whole game worth it
hopefully Automata's gameplay makes the boss fights actually be as intense as the music
Very important and the list is way too big.
Here's a recent(recent for an EOP at least) good one

A lot.

why is this song so good
While it's great,I find it overrated considering it's the first thing that comes up when people discuss OFF's soundtrack when there are many other really good tracks.

It is probably the second most important thing next to gameplay, if we include music in with general sound design.
its the first one brought up because (like most rpgs) its the song you hear the most
its not surprising that its the most memorable
>How important is music in a video game to you
Great music is a godsend, but it's not vital in the slightest.
>what video game has the best soundtrack?
Mother 3 has the best overall soundtrack in my mind, but Xenoblade probably has the better music. Comes down to taste I guess.
Sound design is the single-most important aspect of making a game.
Games are an interactive media and the audio (music as well as sound effects) are what set tone and add thematic weight. As a designer you ignore this at your peril.
Jonathon Blow's recent excretion is perhaps the most egregious example in that it has no soundtrack, and the game is basically unplayable because of it. On the other end of the spectrum are AAA games which mostly aim for creating a cinematic experience, using generic orchestra and rock, which is among the worst design choices you can make (for any game that isn't just a string of setpieces) because it relies on on-rail style score timing and failure creates an experience that is totally unmemorable.
So every game needs a good soundtrack, but what that means depends on the type of game you're making. For a puzzle game you need tunes the player wont grow bored of (tetris theme is still inoffensive even after 30 years). For a horror game you need something atmospheric (everything Akira Yamaoka made). For an actiony game you need something that rises climatically with key moments (Metal Gear Rising and its vocal inserts). etc.
Ar Tonelico has the best soundtrack of any video game series ever made, by the way. The first game in particular. The setpiece hymns and background music alike are absolutely spectacular.

Not a single good game has bad music
>was about to start Ar Tonelico
>see that
What a coincidence.
problem with OFF is that the music is really bad in succession.
Shame it doesn't work the other way around.
here come the fucking weebs with their jpop trash
But I can think of plenty bad games with good music.
like sonic
almost any sonic
Protip: Install the Purger song crystal into Misha.
...
it does help you get immersed in the world and think fondly of it, whether the gameplay is good or bad, despite shortcomings.

Pretty important to me, I can overlook flaws in games like Final Fantasy XIII, NieR and Chrono Cross because of the god tier OSTs.
Good music can fix any scene, which is actually a problem because a lot of people rely on sad music
Game music is super fucking important. Certain games thrive off of it ie.

You know that feeling when the OST fits the game so well it's destiny? Even if the game isn't all that great.
It's glorious.

But you can't think of a good game with bad music
I'm always up for more strings in soundtracks.
Not bad, I can't really think of any games with "bad" music, but Final Fantasy XII's is really forgettable but I love the game.
Doom 4s music was pretty mediocre.
honestly though whats your definition of bad? like resident evil basement bad?
because very few games have music like that.
adding to this because this track is too great to pass up.

Final Fantasy XIV
Music? Fantastic.
Graphical style and art design? Great
Story? Average.
Gameplay? Fucking atrocious.

The score of XII is fantastic, it's not a IX or VII that's for sure, but forgettable?
youtube.com
Meant VIII, but VII is great too.
That, Streets of Rabanastre and Salikawood are the only songs I remember.
Weakest of the mainline OSTs.
>Nybeth
When did he leave TO for FF? He even brought the music with him.
The last patch, about 2-3 months ago.
He's the second (and currently final) major boss in the weird roguelike mode they added to the game recently.
>IX
>fantastic
IX is shit all around, it only has one good track
>Uematsu's last soundtrack for the series
>One of his worst
Kek
9 does have a relatively weak score compared to even its neighboring games.
9's strengths are its settings and its fanservice
Hahaha, what?
>its not as good as other games
>its bad
these things don't need to both be true user
I got a gripe with the 'not as good' part.
It's Uematsu's best FF score.
Uematsu said its his favorite, probably said that just because it was his last though.
It really can do a remarkable job by contributing to a game's atmosphere.

Why did Practical have to be such a cunt? Fuck.
