Video games are in love with orchestral music rather than pop music, which is something to rejoice over.

Also, consider the reason why MJ's name was never officially tied to Sonic 3. Games don't want to associate their games to people because celebrities tend to do stupid shit nowdays, like getting on arguments over Twiter defending that the Earth is flat or getting their nude images leaked.

I mean music in the game radio stations. It's always indie music (Sleeping Dogs, GTA V, Forza Horizon 3, Need for Speed) now.

Do you know how much big-name licensed music costs, son? They stopped making Guitar Hero games for a reason, you know.

Not that you CAN'T turn up a profit with licensed music, but people can listen to it while playing from something outside of the game, if they'd like. Using indie music is a better choice.

Probably for the same reason we can't seem to fucking get anything S3&K done.

It's cheaper and also more "in". People like indie music, so there's more of it.

Why did GTA used to have a lot of it between 2001-2004 then?

Things changed. They know game studios make big bucks now, so they want more because they know they can pay.

GTA V had tons of major label music.

>Video games are in love with orchestral music rather than pop music, which is something to rejoice over.

Nope. Orchestral music has to be one of the most dull and overused genres of music. I can't really recall any music OST that used that genre of music and go "Hey, I really I wanna go to YouTube and re-listen to that OST".

Orchestral music has been in vidya since the dawn of CD-quality games. Panzer Dragoon being the oldest example I can think of the top of my head.

However, the best examples of Orchestral music in vidya are the Halo OSTs. You have to be an uncultured swine not to think those songs are objectively good.

Many other games do orchestral correctly, such as a Ace Combat series.

...

I'll give you that somr of it is iconic, I just think its one of those genres that most composers don't really do much outside of "blend in the background" and that is it. It seems to me alot of games kinda adopt the same attitude when it comes to movies of just having orchestral music in it "Just because".

This was the last time for me. There are some gems out there.

>use music from big labels
you answered your own question

big labels are nothing but trouble. they'll suck you dry, take all the profits, and then in the end you'd have probably have to pay them just to make a re-release of the game with music intact

Every 3D GTA and the past two (and probably first two?) Saints Row games.

MGSV

FFXV's opens with a cover of Stand By Me.

>I don't like pop

You gotta admit the music for that MJ level is pretty fuckin dope

I blame western games for this, I mean, people still jerk off to Doom soundtrack after all these years, that's a clear sign that there is something wrong.

It reminds me of how most of american Genesis soundtracks sound bland as hell compared to the japanese ones, composing for vidya has its quirks.

Isn't one of the reasons for MGSV being a giant money sink for Konami was that using all those songs cost a fuck ton?

I think developing a new system of facial capture and then forgetting to use it among other things would be more of an issue.

I doubt if such b-sides as Only Time Will Tell cost a fortune to license.

Probably because it was a reattempt of making midi copyright safe covers of many metal songs. To be fair, alot of Japanese composers of that decade like Yuzo Koshiro do the same shit as well. I do agree that most american are pretty shit when it comes to using the genesis soundchip. There is Tim Follin but he isn't American and he was foremost a composer for Amiga games.

Why do video games these days dont use Super Eurobeat anymore?
