Is it gonna be any good? The wait has been long.
Hiveswap is now Greenlit on Steam
It's going to be shit and/or the next undertale
never heard of it.
Basically Homestuck: The Game.
The Head Writer and Lead Director of the game is apparently some guy named Cohen Edenfield - not Andrew Hussie. Has he made any other games?
I don't know what Homestuck is either.
>Music by Toby Fox
>Is it gonna be any good
No. But let's lie to ourselves and say it will be
The game isn't going to sell. Wanna know why? The only people interested in it are the backers who ponied up 2.4 million dollars to fund the game in the first place - the same backers who are entitled to EIGHT EPISODES of this shit
Yeah, episodes. Hiveswap is an episodic game - two hours per episode
Meaning Hiveswap has to compete with Telltale and the synergy of Clem and the Walking Dead - along with all the other games coming out in January
inb4 another shitty remix of the same shitty song he keeps using
How do I become as cool as Toby "I am the only reason Hiveswap will sell" Fox?
So it's hot garbage
Make something good enough for normies to like, just deep enough for tumblr to love, but shitty enough for Sup Forums to hate and not deep enough for tumblr to not understand it
Sup Forums absolutely loved Undertale at first.
Sup Forums loved the Undertale Demo, which is infinitely more complex with its meta shit than Undertale proper
Once it came out that there's only really three routes to the game and that the meta stuff is there as fluff people soured to ti
I think UT is a good game, but I also think the demo was deliberately misleading as to what the game would be
The demo pitched this concept of a story more complex than "killing is wrong."
Undertale the Game rewards you for killing but then reloading to save people, Undertale the Demo mocked you for it
It's still a little contested since there are a lot of people with varying opinions, I think most of the people that hate it hate it because the demo was good and it didn't follow through
that or because popular = shit
TWD 1 was the only good game by Telltale though
Although I heard Borderlands was good as well
understand tropes well enough to mix them up and have your chosen audiences' feelings under your thumb
The first month or so Undertale discussion on Sup Forums was mostly positive. Then people started getting sick of seeing threads for it, because ignoring threads you don't like is a concept that Sup Forums struggles with.
Then the shitposting started, followed by counter-shitposting, mostly over MGSV. Then came the GameFAQs poll, which just escalated things further.
I'm talking about sales dipshit, not quality.
Compare the views.
Hiveswap Act 1: youtube.com
I like Toby, I think UT was a good game - but I also think Sup Forums isn't completely wrong when they get frustrated by UT
UT uses a lot of "aesthetic" to pander without pandering. Small things, like Undyne being gay, or Frisk being agender
Dogwhistles to a certain demo - a certain demo known for exaggerating the quality of a product
In my opinion it is nothing short of brilliant - but even Toby felt a bit bad about the overstated quality of his game.
Still, he succeeded and he did it on his own. He ran a kickstarter which raised 50k but spent that budget wisely and sold a product which millions of people bought. Toby should be respected and admired - all memes aside.
It's like you think he's making music to spite people and not just because he likes to make music.
Dude isn't forcing anything on anyone, don't buy stuff he works on if you don't like his craft.
He spent that 50k on his bills.
Personal bills? Well, that's fine. Whatever gets the game made, and the game got made. I think the only backer on that KS that got screwed was Butterdragon guy, and fuck him.
>a certain demo known for exaggerating the quality of a product
How was this exactly? I remember playing the undertale demo long before it came out but as far as I remember it's just the first part of the full game
>guy pays money for a character to be in the game
>his character gets shoved to the farthest reaches of the game in some pointless secret area that doesn't matter
>fuck him
do you really think he deserved that?
Have you seen the character outside the game?
Well, he was offered his money back, which would spare him all the fallout of all this.
I don't expect him to, but he should've known that trying to get a fetish character like that in a game would cause issues.
I think if he paid good money for his character to be in it should be that, considering he didn't want to do stupid inflation shit or whatever in the game
Should've just straight up given him back the money and refused to put him in the game at all rather than take the money and put him in the game knowing everyone will hate it and shoving it in a dark corner
especially considering the other person who bought the same thing he did got their character made a non-optional boss with unique mechanics
>homestuck
who?
He refused to take the refund.
By "demo" I meant "demographic", but sure the demo of the game itself also did that.
The demo of Undertale - the ruins - has more variables and impact than the final game does. The best ending - the one where you spare Alphys the first time around - can only be gotten once.
If you kill Alphys and reload, you'll be called out. It's much more interesting than the ultimate product, which locks you into the neutral or genocide route no matter what.
Butterdragonfag was told by Toby "Look man I can't have your character in this game, I'll refund you."
Butterdragonfag said "No, keep my money and have my character be a bonus boss." He insisted on it.
Butterdragonfag got the treatment Butterdragonfag asked for.
I never played undertale, what kind of shitty character did this guy come up with?
He wanted his fat-fetish OC in the game.
This. Secret boss you can only fight if you go to one place in the game on one hour of one day in the year.
Samuel Butterdragon, a fedora wearing fat fetish OC
KEK
Yeah - so can you blame Toby for "betraying" this backer by shoving his OC to the side? Toby even offered to refund him!
Incidentally, it shows how Toby had better judgement than Inafune did with Mighty Number 9
>Think about Homestuck a few days ago glad I dropped that shit years ago
>Itch to go and read Problem Sleuth again
Sad and glad this doesn't get the same attention Homestuck does.
Hows Prequel? Worth reading?
Prequel is good, but the story doesn't update. If Kazerad updated regularly after the finale/mercy killing of Homestuck he'd be the big Webcomic dude - he's the only one with the talent for it.
Alas, Kazerad is as lazy as he is talented. He's convinced himself(with graphs and "data") that update frequency doesn't affect a webcomic's popularity
If only.
Hiveswap isn't even being written by the creator of Homestuck. It's basically a non-canon sequel to the original story with characters no one has heard of. The game was originally made with 3D models but they ran out of money (having a office in New York and refunds from displeased Kickstarter backers didn't help) and instead went with the 2D concept art for the final product.
This isn't a Homestuck game. More like a fanwork. Have you seen what the actual game looks like? The art style is all over the place and severely clashes with one another. Realistic drawn backgrounds, shitty looking player models, PIXEL WALKIE-TALKIE, etc.
This is gonna be such ass.
This is a tweet by the lead director of the game, btw
>homestuck is the only reason Toby fox was a name
It's like poetry
Undertale would have succeeded regardless. Toby did make the most of the HS fanbase though, can't lie.
Why is this any surprise from the comic that had an entire alien species be pansexual & the only canon relationship was a lesbian one
I wonder if xe's place of work is up to fire safety standards.
They lost more money to The Odd Gentlemen than they did to having a fucking office.
Well for context Cohen Edenfield was in the midst of a mental breakdown about Donald Trump, Bernie Bros, and sexists.
Check the date of the tweet. Also, a comic by Edenfield's illustrator
Faggots
Sunken cost fallacy
Sorry mate
I just looked and the faggot's twitter is full of political shit. Worst kind of person to be given any sort of responsibility.
What are you talking about, user! The conflicting art styles matches up perfectly to how Hussie used tons of different, conflicting artwork for flash pages nearing the middle/end of act 6.
The idea was nice, to get people out there, but ultimately the mesh of styles started to fail because some artists he picked were just godawful or too stylized.
>tfw will never be able to be a game designer
>tfw the people i despise most get to be directors
It's not fair.
whats the character like? im leaning towards 3 or 4
2 or 4
>nearing the middle/end of act 6.
Like anyone cared about this comic at that point.
It's true they lost money that way, but they obviously fucked up internally if they let that happen. The office they had really did take a fair amount of money though, it's not cheap and they lost money from refunding Kickstarter backers because of their failure to release anything for years. The only reason we are getting a single episode right now is because of merchandise sales that the Homestuck team has been shoving down the fandom's throat.
Hussie should have ended the comic years ago, or at least put it on hold. His dad's death, his crazy gf, and all the other shit that has gone down fucked up his passion.
That is the one thing making it so that the game wont be absolutely irredeemable
This. The section with Toriel is 10/10, then the games goes off the rails a little bit. Asirel is an insult to gaming.
Sexuality is strange, isn't it?
Jesus what is wrong with hussie
I used to at least admire his work ethic, but he couldn't even be bothered to finish drawing his own damn comic, and now he pawns off directing to some literally who. What is he even doing these days?
I don't think he ever recovered from his breakdown and his dad's death.
It sure is. That thing isn't even all that strange, compared to all the other shit you can find out there on the internet.
After the "Caucasian" thing and his dad dying he hasn't really been the same. He's left the comic and this game in the hands of other people and just wants to get off the grid for awhile.
I think he makes his Star Trek youtube poops when not masturbating and that's about it.
I hope that after the game and the epilogue are released he can get his mind on the right track again
>ran out of money
The Kings quest guys genuinely stole their money and used it to fund their game instead of working on 3D models. Hussie is retarded and didn't make them sign anything though so they got away with it and now it's the 2D abortion that you see today.
>or put it on hold
>he doesn't know
>open discussion of homosuck on Sup Forums
Well Hussie and crew could have totally gotten the money back, but it wouldn't have been worth it since they would have lost more in court. The Odd Gentlemen knew what they were doing and played it smart. That's the problem with inexperienced idiots and "Idea Guys", Hussie got played.
Better to leave it alone than continue and make a shitty conclusion. Even Berserk has suffered, it's all moe digital crap now.
>hiveswap isn't a videogame
I think Hussie just hates people now.
Look at his fanbase and everyone he's dealt with on a business level.
actually the money problem mostly came from hussie just going "you dont gotta sign anything, i trust you" and then they fucked him over and they made kings quest with that money and with the little leftover they got they are making hiveswap
He hates what his fanbase has become.
He always loved making counter culture and ironic humor, and now over half of his new fanbase finds that stuff offensive.
He also knows he can't move onto anything new without them tagging along and shitting on any 'offensive' jokes he makes. It's broken the man
Hiveswap started when Hussie first started to realize that there were big parts of his fanbase that were the easily offended tumblr type, but he didn't know just how much at that point. That realization came after the 'caucasian' joke.
His Dad also died which probably made him reflect a lot on his life and now he questions whether it's worth it to make money selling t-shirts to special snowflakes he'd never want to be seen in a 2 mile radius with.
I imagine he'll be back with a new comic in a year or two, but the updates will be less frequent and it'll be nothing even remotely similar to homestuck with the only occasional reference making fun of it.
Used to be commonplace in the past.
Homestuck was fantastic through about act 4
Act 5 act 1 was decent.
Act 5 and 2 was better, but not quite as good as pre Act 5. The build up to the scratch was still pretty fun
The very very very start of Act 6 had really good signs to it, but it quickly went down the drain and became really shit.
There are two ways to read Homestuck.
Either read up to the end of Act 4 then pretend they fail and Jack kills all of them.
OR, read up to the end of Act 5 and pretend the Scratch resets the world without Sburb or the universe ending viruses ever get activated and they save their worlds without anyone ever knowing.
Or just read one of the billion AUs the fandom has created and just pretend that the one that appeals to you is what actually happened
>ignores the only good part of homestuck: sburb, the actual video game with awesome rougelike mechanics, loot, character classes, and fun
>instead is a point and click interactive story that focuses in on everything that turned the comic to liquid shit: teenage melodrama, trolls, and virtue signaling to tumblr
>also created by one of the most incompetent dev teams in the history of indie games, and written by some nobody who rants about gay ships on twitter
>AND it has taken bar none the longest time from crowdfunding to release than any other game
I'm sure it'll be a hit, op.
should have just stuck to the original homestuck art style
not that the left isn't good, but no one would have minded the right and it would have been easier to put more stuff in
i'm completely clueless about homestuck and i've avoided like if it was cancer due to super-active fandom
since everything calmed down, can any fan here redpill me about Homestuck?
will it not be yet another shitty mother-like?
Even the people who liked Homestuck won't do that now because of how badly it ended.
Do people make money making webcomics? Seems like alot of time and effort for something that doesnt support you.
Advertisements and merch.
It's a webcomic in the form of a text adventure game. It started out very entertaining, but then the author got 2 million dollars, lost interest and went full-Tumblr.
