Anyone else think Nioh trying to be Dark Souls is a huge waste of potential? So much could be done with this game but theyve opted to just have it be Dark Souls wearing the skin of Onimusha
Anyone else think Nioh trying to be Dark Souls is a huge waste of potential...

The only people who'll fall for this are people who haven't played Nioh, OP
But it's Sup Forums so it'll happen anyway
but its true. Its mechanics are all ripped straight out of dark souls.
It's like 10 times faster than souls with a far more varied combat styles
sure, same with Bloodborne. I dont want games to do something just cause someone else did itthough. I want them to makeNioh stand up on its own as a wholly unique thing
How good was this game? I downloaded the beta demo the night before it ended (I didn't know it was about to end) and only played for about 30 minutes. It wasn't long enough for me to figure out what I was doing at all. I just got raped repeatedly. But I platted Bloodborne.
not out yet so who knows
Yeah I re-read my post and realized I didn't ask that right. I just meant to ask how good it looked like it would be based on the demo, from people who spent more time on it than I did.
well I missed both demos cause I didnt even get a ps4, but I gather its a good Souls-clone
It's really not much like Souls at all. It's much more technical and stamina management plays out totally differently. I love Souls but think Nioh is just alright, and I'm sure there are people who feel the exact opposite. I think it appeals more to the Ninja Gaiden crowd than the Souls crowd.
Nope. Not in the slightest.
The RPG elements bring far more depth to the Onimusha formula and I far and away prefer that every enemy encounter be important rather than just chewing through fodder.
What we fucking need is another Ninja Gaiden game, tbqhwy fampaitachi.
Souls games discovered the formula for near perfect combat. Nioh is attempting to improve on that formula and theres nothing wrong with that
if the game was western everyone would be bitching about how racist it was that the main dude is white
but Souls didnt find the perfect combat formula. It found its own way to do one specific type of combat. Not every game with combat should play like dark souls
And instead it's eastern and you're here bitching about theoretical bitching.
I prefer when my own skill is required to win a fight, not working past arbitrary limitations
Good thing Nioh doesn't.
The only major thing the two have in common with the combat is that every enemy is powerful.
I'm not sure what you mean.
>implying I'm making shit up
even now they are bitching about it
but once they are reminded the game isn't western they stfu for awhile
Sorry buts its objectively the best form of melee combat in any game ever created.
>Hurr wheels are the best way to make tires its just one of the ways!
What do I have to do to make you shut up for a while?
and the stamina management
and the rpg elements where you collect souls to spend at shrines/bonfires to improve stats for combat
and the whole every time you die its actually canon but for some reason all the enemies respawn along with you
You need to be 18 to post here.
what for? if they go out of their way to be truly unique but end up with inferior gameplay because of it, it's not worth it.
if they make it a point to ensure there's nothing that's similar to Dark Souls, someone else will point out it still looks similar to another action game. There's only so many ways you can create a 3d action game.
Great argument bro
in a game like Ninja Gaiden or Onimusha, when your presented with a tough situation, you get lut of it by your own raw skill at playing the game. In somethkng like Dark Souls, you get out of it by going back and grinding until you have the right level forthe fight. not very skill based
I don't know how to tell you this, user, but I think you might be a faggot.
you only have yourself to blame for replying to my original comment with bullshit
I loved the first beta using low stance where you could keep refilling your stamina to keep the action up.
Shame they got rid of it.
theres being similar to something and then theres just ripping it off. Nioh could be a slow paced action game without having to just be dark souls: samurai edition
I think you told him just fine tbqh.
they put it back in.
I think latest footage shows both low and high stance recovering stamina with dodge.
>you get out of it by going back and grinding until you have the right level forthe fight.
Fuck off, in souls level doesn't mean shit.
It's the weapon that needs to be good
I still don't understand can compare this to Dark Souls. Probably have more similarities with DMC than Dark Souls.
Ow, I am burned
and you make thebweapon good by grinding until its strong enough, rather than requiring you, the player, to actually get better at the game
They didn't?
are fucking serious?
the game is literally dark souls
fair enough, I agree with that. It's just that from playing both demo releases, it doesn't feel like a dark souls rip off to me. The stance changing in mid-combo was enough for me to make it stand on its own. It's more like a cross between DMC and Bloodborne to me. There's a fair amount of special moves including a ridiculous spinning warhammer attack.
>kill a enemies and bosses with starting weapon
>get enough dosh to upgrade and picked up material on the way
>rinse and repeat
There is no need to grind
well alrkght. You got a good point. Im glad we reached an understanding of each other
they literally use "its like dark souls" as a marketing tactic
t
the very act of getting said dosh is grinding. Arguing this is like arguing that the sky isnt blue
Granted, I've only played DaS and BB, but I never encountered a single instance were I required grinding in order to continue the game. I had to grind some stuff to upgrade specific weapons and such, but I never did it because I NEEDED to.
>progressing through the game is grinding
son, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you might be retarded
So what? You wouldn't fight the enemies in NG then? Grinding is when you fought enemies already and are doing it again to get goods. If you didn't need to level up weapons then what would you do? Skip past everyone?
The Beta lost some important aspects that the Alpha had that really set the combat and setting above and beyond, but both demos were very enjoyable. The comparisons to Souls are more in the out-of-combat mechanics and some level design, but the combat with it's multiple different stances, customizable skills and combos and the random loot system letting you finetune your stats makes it very much it's own thing. It's not quite Souls and not quite Ninja Gaiden. It's Nioh and that's all it should be, despite many people wanting it to be other things.
The difference is that in this game learning the combos is necessary. You can combo different buttons in souls as well but its kinda pointless.
in ninja gaiden, you grind to get currency to use at Muramasas shop yes. But you can go through the gamewithout doing that because the game is based on skill and not stats. You go forward, enemies show up, you kill the enemies, you go forward, rince, repeat. in Dark Souls you go forward, kill enemies, run back to bonfire tk skightky alter a stat, then go back, fight the same enemies again, and keep doing this, only making slightly more and more progress each time.
literally the only time you dont do this in dark souls is when youve leveled enough or upgraded your weapon enough that you wont need to until the next dungeon area. because you grinded so much that the area is now a cake walk
I don't remember grinding for currency one single bit in Ninja Gaiden. Does this mean I'm just a badass then?
> But you can go through the gamewithout doing that
Just like in Dark Souls.
> in Dark Souls you go forward, kill enemies, run back to bonfire tk skightky alter a stat, then go back, fight the same enemies again, and keep doing this, only making slightly more and more progress each time.
No I don't.
Low stance having Dodge Pulse was completely unnecessary and made it far too easy to keep your Ki high and safely output a ton of damage. Moving it to high stance was one of the few great changes the Beta made, it fit it much better and gave the stance some self sufficiency that it lacked compared to the other two.
But of course they took Combo Pulse off of high stance and gave it to low when it would be useless there, and have now decided to give both stances Dodge Pulse despite it being a completely stupid idea.
So you didn't play the game.
>fight the same enemies again,
You don't have to do this though.
In souls can just
>go to a new area
>kill everyone you see until you get to boss and pick up shit you see on the way
>make sure you have a shortcut set up
>kill boss
>go back to main hub if you want and upgrade weapons
>now go to new area rinse and repeat
You don't NEED to kill same enemies again so don't know where you're basing this from
>preset male character
Fuck this, why is not customizable?
Because they're telling an actual focused story with him as the main character. Besides, there's hundreds of different armour sets and we might be able to change his hairstyle and dye the armour.
there's a rumor that you can play one of the female characters, perhaps in a NG+ if ever
It doesn't matter, you still will be a GUY.
This could have been touhou souls, dammit.
Like what.
Stamina Management is pretty different from Souls
This rumour is so fucking unfounded
There is nothing that indicates that we will be able to play with different characters.
They've confirmed multiple times that the only playable character for now will be William-sama because of the story. The only reason we thought otherwise was because of the pictures on the map screen, but a demo proved that not to be the case.
However, who knows what they'll do for DLC, and while I'd rather people ask for more important things like an Alpha balanced mode, they've proven to do what they see people asking for, regardless of what it is.
It used to be entirely different. Then people asked for it to be changed because it was different, instead of just learning how to deal with it. Now it's only a bit different but there's still more emphasis on it than any Souls game.
I say Ninja Gaiden is the best form of melee combat created so fuck off.
It's still vastly different user.
Just because the game doesn't punish you as hard it still punishes you pretty badly for not managing the stamina
That's what I'm saying, it's different but not as different as it was and should be. You shouldn't be able to swing faster than the enemy while mashing on empty, and you still only pay for it if they manage to get a hit in or if you're already in a bad situation, rather than low Ki actually being the bad situation itself.
>melee combat
>bows
>checkpoints
>levels with branching paths
>challenging (at least more than most games)
>stamina bar
I like Souls but it didn't invent any of these things
Because this is based on a story by Akira Kurosawa, they ain't gone change that shit
I'll buy the PC release at 50% discount, doesn't deserve more. NEVER EVER compare this garbage with Bloodborne, kthxbye.
He's absolutely right though
Once you know the tricks behind stat scaling and juicing up your weapons souls difficulty is trivialized
I get a little triggered when people compare the Souls games to Bloodborne, even.
Bloodborne is a Souls game.
Actually, they've said the original script they had doesn't really factor into the story anymore. I'm sure it's still influenced by it in some ways (as it would be by most samurai movies), but they're not sticking to it, as shown by the MC being William-sama instead of a half Japanese half English guy called Oni.
It literally isn't, though. It's Bloodborne.
Oh, really? That's a shame. Still, no point in people complaining about it stealing from souls when it tells it's story in a completely different way.
Morrowind in third person is my favorite Souls game.
Personally I loved it, I understand some people won't like it but I think if you enjoyed Bloodborne you'd enjoy it. I played about 40 hours between both demos, and am extremely excited to get my hands on it.
Bloodborne is a Soulsborne game :^)
It does have some influence from Souls but it's mainly things that have been done before in other games, it's just that was the most recent game to put it all in one package, and it brings more than enough to the table to be it's own thing. Never forget that the Conquered pasta was made in part because of so many Souls "fans" trying to play the game in exactly the same way and making no progress because of it.
Final cover-art revealed last night.
>It's really not much like Souls at all.
It's clear that it took inspiration from Souls. Saying it's not like it at all is a bit of an over exaggeration.
Who do the big glowing red eyes top right belong to?
Kelly?
That's true, I just mean to say that combat doesn't play out in a very similar way.
I think so; just looks like he has his hood up.
It already does Dark Souls better than the original itself. And yeah, they should avoid being too similar, but I think they got it covered by now.
From what we've been allowed to play, the similarities end in the health and stamina bar. Other games let you level up and equip stuff the same way, so those are out. Oh, and recovering your points is also the same.
Really, it's just fresh and new. Dark Souls is stale and boring, and has been since DaS2. Miyazaki never wanted more Dark Souls after the first anyway, so everything else is due to contract obligations.
Nioh is its own thing, and it's awesome for it.
It was in response to the not really stealing from souls part, but yeah it could be a reply to like five other posts.
Looks alright, kinda gives me vibes of the really old Ni-Oh artwork from the first version of the game. Wonder if it'll be like this everywhere, and if the Deluxe edition will be the same or if there'll be a steelbook.
So the full game might have 20ish guardian spirits.
That was one aspect I found really interesting in the demos.
They gave a bunch of different passive and active abilities.
Looking forward to seeing how leveling them up works.
I am hoping it would be Onimusha + Souls
I'm happy you pointed that out actually, I was just thinking that.
Higher quality.
Sasuga!
yeah Dark Souls has always been shit when it comes to gameplay or game mechanics
I would have enjoyed the demo way more if it hadnĀ“t been so much like it.
the things that I liked about the demo the most have the least to do with Dark Souls
...
I just hope they kept the original trailer song.
>Dark Souls has always been shit when it comes to gameplay or game mechanics
Haha
You're right I wish it was a hero-based MMO fps
wait a minute...
Development of the game has been off and on for years. They didn't know what to do with it. Then they played Dark Souls, and it all fit. Soulsborne games have gotten pretty rehashy. At first it was revolutionary, but it's now tired and done. Now, Nioh is making a lot of improvements and changes to the gameplay that seem welcome. It's taking the games to the next level.
