it was an originator. it was unique in of its genre, that it essentially created.
i cant even think of another game that was like kingdom hearts before it came out; its blending and seamless integration of its combat system and exploration. it was a new and unique feeling game.
the story is clinically jrpg, theres no criticism you can put on it that you cant put on every other jrpg. the graphics were amazing and still hold up, and the music was great too. the combat was also fun. theres not much more you could want in a game than a game thats unique, fun, with great aesthetics.
it is one of the most popular games on ps2 for a reason. it might be THE most popular game on the ps2.

Combat felt very uninspired, animations were floaty, animu lead was a douche. Nothing that happened felt properly motivated.

The problem with KH's combat isn't just that it's uninspired or simplistic, it's also extremely fucking slow and repetitive which is about the worst combination you can get. Thankfully KH2 improved on this tremendously but then again KH2 is the only Kingdom Hearts game that truly feels outstanding.
What's funny is that back in the day, Sup Forums saw this for the mediocre series that it was but now there seems to be more Nomuracucks on this board than anywhere else on the internet.

I'll be honest KH1 is probably the worst game in the series mechanically. It's obvious, Square had no idea what the fuck they were doing at the time and was just using the Disbey/FF brand to sell the game.
I would recommend at least trying KH2 before writing off the franchise. It fixes most of the problems from the first gane minus the convoluted story,(which actually gets more confusing in the 2nd game) and the Final Mix version is considered the best in the series by many fans.
