It'd be very steep for 5D, but it's very good deal even for VI alone. It's a proper JRPG, taking about 50 hours to beat.

She gets small dere moment at the end, but she's very tsun all the way through. One thing I really like about this series is how characters develop, in VI Maria finally opens up and admits that she loves Rance, after going back and forth with her feelings for three games before that.
Shizuka's initial encounter with Rance was pretty sour, so it's no wonder she takes longer to warm up to him.

Prior to Rance Quest the sex-scenes in the series are very short, and generally not descriptive. I suppose after Sengoku Alicesoft realized that people actually like it when eroge has erotic sex scenes, since they've really been stepping it up since then.

Rance 5D is the fifth game, the reason it's called that is that developement was hell and it went through three iterations before TADA just went "fuck it" and made the game together with Orion and Shade.
The original plan was for it to be really grand quest, but the finished product is the most pointless adventure there is.

Its not a forced add on. They made Rance so they could make a porn game and Rance is the character he is because they decided that only a character like Rance would get as much sex with as many different women as they wanted the protagonist to have.

The rape is a pretty integral point in the world though, a lot of the story hinges on the notion that while Rance is an asshole, the actual villains are that much worse.

Take away the rape from Rance himself and his entire character makes no sense, his entire motivation is to have sex with girls so you'd need to re-write his entire character.

Rance is basically an adventurer who doesn't care much for finer things in life, or making much of a name for himself. But he has knack for getting into situations through which he becomes a hero.
Through the games the scale of his adventures varies wildly. It can be anything from saving a town that has been sunk into earth, conquering a nation or getting lost into a cave.
The gameplay of the series also varies. Some are akin to traditional adventure games, VI is dungeon crawler RPG and Sengoku is grand strategy. But unlike most RPG series that switch setting with each game, Rance has been going with same world and characters since the 80s. And the backstory that the world has is fucking insane, I really recommend reading some stuff in the Wiki, like stuff about gods and Demon Kings.
...Or probably better not to do that. Since 5D and VI are releasing in few days, better just to play those to get the feel for the series. They're great introduction to series, one is totally stupid, while the other is one of the more serious games.

Best to just go with 5D first since it's rather short and sets up a pretty important plot point in VI.
