Risen 3 isn't that bad. I'd hazard to say it's on the level of Gothic 3.

I am sorry but Risen 3 is by far the most polished PB games and it shows.
Other PB games have a hot mess of a combat, and they all suffer from the SAME fucking problem. That is the fact the developers obviously made a combat system based on 1v1 melee humanoid combat, yet 90% of the battles are you alone against 3-4+ enemies and wildlife that can't be blocked/dodged.
Risen 3 is also the only one that got the factions right, all have their own sort of magic/unique things.
And to say Risen 2 is better than 3 just shows you either never played it or are just baiting.
Same about Gothic 3 which is one of the biggest piles of trash ever with a broken, unfinished combat system. The music and atmosphere are about the only things that save it.

It's pretty fun for the first 10-15 hours then it's all over the place and full of bugs.
The world even though is bigger than first 2 games it feels emptier. Story is meh.

Being compared to Gothic 3 is hardly high praise though. It's like saying "well, it's better than Arcania". Whoop de fucking doo.

It's not Gothic 2 but quite honestly it's very good as far as PB games go.
And as I said the combat actually feels to be in the player's favor for once since you got a dodge roll with iframes and can smoothly and quickly switch between locked targets while also stunlocking them if you combo it properly instead of mashing RMB.
The maps are also decent and have plenty of verticality, flying around as a parrot to explore the map and find secrets is pretty fun

The problem with Arcania is that's its just an average rpg and has about nothing to do with Gothic series.
Heck they could at least have added a faction system.

The Story does not seem to have any kind of urgency zome of the zones can be bland and lack content. Id say it is a good game when factions would have actually mattered and the combat would have worked. But none is the case so the game is rather bad. The only really outstanding thing about the game is that it still has fun exploration with gorgeous looking landscapes (with mods obviously) all that with some of the best music of based kai rosenkranz

Gothic and Gothic 2 I recommend everyone should play, without reservation. They're truly among the GOAT. The first one an idea better than the second one, but not a big difference.

Risen 1 took the right path, but lacked content and was among the smalest of Piranhas games, but it was a step in the right direction and had hopes up for me again. Then the pos called Risen 2 happened and all hope faded away.

I played G2 though and loved it. I don't have the expansion though, will buy it because I wanna be a pirate.

It's the only kind of game they know how to make. And the fact the success of Gothic 1 and 2 was kind of a happy accident they've been trying to replicate ever since. They don't know themselves what made the first games so good.

Risen 1 wasn't perfect, it lacked the thick atmosphere that made the first two Gothic games so amazing and the factions were much less interesting, but the gameplay was great. The combat was basically the same, but better, more streamlined and action-oriented, but didn't devolve into button-mashing. Same for magic, it was the old system with a couple of cool tweaks that made it a joy to use. The UI was super good, clean and informative.
You could actually feel the spirit of gothic in this game and while it wasn't as good as G1/G2 it suggested that piranha bytes can still make great games and perhaps one day finally revive gothic

I feel like the console market got to them.
The first Risen was not very well recieved in America and the console version was dogshit tier bad. So it got many bad scores. With Risen 2 they tried to improve on the critics they recieved and tried to shoehorn a cinematic character focused story in the manner of mass effect into the game.

The leveldesign in g1+g2 was goat. They should have focused on that tried to improve it bring better quality to other things and explore new scenarios and genres with that in mind. Instead we got a bad copy cat studio that tries to catch up to the likes of Bioware and Bethesda.

Id switch G1 with G2 but thats nostalgiafagging

I have to add here Risen 3 improved things again, but I feel like the engine changes they made had severe impacts on the way the levels were designed

terain used to be handmade in every prainha game so far instead of 2+3
we now got heightmap generated terrain which simply doesnt bring these complex underground levels to live as we were used to

The "shadows" in their engine is dogshit. I'd immediately uninstall their games if i couldn't turn it off.

I almost noped away from G3 when i saw how he swings his sword in combat. Aside from that it was a great experience.

Except the end dungeon, Gothic 2 is better than Gothic 1 in basically every way.
