Vile mode was rad as fuck. On hard mode I suffered on the X/Zero fight. Shit was fuckin tough

I think I can see where you're going with that, but X8 felt like a huge letdown. Great music, shitty vehicle stages, okay armors, story never got the chance to go anywhere. Also 3D models constrained to a 2D plane just sucks.

X5 was a shitstorm of fuck with a level design that's surprisingly worse than X6.

X1 gets everything right, so it should go at the top. I don't feel strongly about any of the PlayStation games, but X4 is easily the best. X6 improved on X5 setbacks a bit, but still had the armor constraint that wasn't resolved until X8, and was arguably as incomplete as X3, if not moreso. It is a lot harder than X3, but I prefer what X3 brought to the table over what X6 did. X5 is bland in comparison, but I'd still rather play that than X7, and Command Mission is not even an action game. Maverick Hunter X is a better candidate for comparison, but then you'd also have to include the two Xtreme games.

I'll give two rating scales based on which one's best built overall vs. which one I enjoy the most:

Fact - X, Zero and ZX series would be EVEN BETTER if they employed more unlockable skins and characters. Even though navigators in X8 play like their counterparts, it was really fun to try them out. Vile mode was cool addition to already great game, and biometals absolutely rule.

X3 built on the double-shot idea with a more creative concept. Despite being slower, the cross charge turned the buster into a spread shot, and could've been extended to Maverick weapons the same way the double shot could have.

X5 had probably the most bland charged shot ever with the Falcon's arrow shot. Gaea's charged shot is literally a shorter-range recolor of the Plasma shot. X6's Blade Armor had what was effectively a smaller Plasma Shot, and the Shadow Armor isn't a shot at all.

X4 had the right idea with the Stock Charge, but everyone naturally picked the Plasma Shot and then the Ultimate Armor, which just ended up getting spammed ever since.
