Nintendo's legal department only fucks you if you make a big deal out of your mod. There are hundreds of ROM hacks on PokeComminity, yet none of those received a C&D.

PM wasn't actually issued any threat (as far as we know, anyway)... though I'm hurt no less by its death. Knuckles is badass, and a polished, finished version would just be incredible.

Not really. This is standard operating procedure, at least as far as Nintendo's concerned.

Because Sonic 06 was an incomplete trainwreck on another level. People throw around "Sonic 06 of the series" to describe what they think the 'worst' game in the series is, but generally comparing shit like XY or ME3 to Sonic 06 is really only making Sonic 06 seem better by putting them on the same pedestal.

06 was unmitigated trash and a shining hallmark of what is wrong with rushed deadlines and trying to meet holiday releases that everyone really should have learned from shit like E.T. It flat out didn't work, and felt like a rushed tech demo, never meant to be played beyond maybe five minutes while your little brother chooses which used game he wants to buy with his allowance at EB Games. But instead it was a full priced release that basically cemented the Sonic cycle as an actual thing rather than a meme.

tl;dr XY might be the worst in the mainline Pokemon games but comparing it to Sonic 06 is raw hyperbole. It wasn't THAT bad. But, y'know, this is Sup Forums. If it ain't flawless it's 'festering shit can't believe i wasted my bandwidth torrenting this 2/10 gaming is ruined.'

Pokemon games were never hard but XY threw full party heals around willy nilly, had rival battles that would ask you if you were ready first iirc, and holy shit EXP Share shouldn't be that effective. Also Poke-mon ami or whatever was effectively a 'do you want this Pokemon to be better in exchange for five minutes of effort Y/N'

They waited a year in silence and then quietly released it anyway.

Tons of SE-related projects also got the banhammer due to having wide publicity before anything was finished.

For a while, PM was relatively popular in the competitive circuit, but then Twitch shat on PM (leading to lots of tournies cutting PM). I guess that more than anything was the reason why the team was scared into closing up shop.
