well they're finally getting to a setting that I really wanted them to explore. But they've been shit since AC3 and haven't mixed up the core game in any significant way.
Only reason I could get excited for a new ac game would be if they started from scratch and made the game feel and play significantly different. Maybe a more manual freerunning system, basically remove the arkham asylum combat almost altogether, go back to the core idea that they intended for the first game, which focused on the public assassination followed by a chase and escape and having the crowds act as human obstacles that try to stop you. And then have the entire game focus around that.

How do they justify the series? I heard Desmond died so I'm guessing his ancestors weren't part of this.

Exactly. Its even worse than that, now the animus is sold as """a home console""" and there are current day """assassins""" who talk to you via skype and pirate your console so you can play memories from more assassins.
the most recent ones act like your console/PC is the modern type of animus, and you are a subject playing the memories of select few other subjects
