What can Sup Forums tell me about this game? I'm in the mood for a new RPG and it's on sale on Steam. The setting looks neat and I expect good writing from Troika. I also seem to recall hearing positive things about it, but can anyone be specific on what I can expect?
I'm probably going to pull the trigger on it regardless because $4 is nothing.
It's one of the greatest cRPGs of all time. There's not much else to say really.
Zachary Hernandez
It's unfinished and poorly balanced like all Troika games.
Samuel Russell
These are the things I remember hearing, usually from Planescape threads if memory serves. Anything specific? I'm curious about magic's place in the setting and how its used in combat.
Connor Walker
It's good, but if you're used to any modern hand holding of any kind, you're gonna have a rough start. Stick to it and it's worth it, and don't worry too much about character creation. Make what you want to be, don't try to minmax.
Nolan Mitchell
it's shit and old
play tyranny instead
Joshua Brooks
dog is love dog is life
Brayden Peterson
Know Shadowrun and how it's Cyberpunk with Fantasy? Arcanum is the same except Steampunk instead of Cyberpunk.
Luke Allen
I used to play it as a kid and I enjoyed it. I didn't ever really mess with magick. I remember a spell that let you raise a spirit of npcs you killed and talk to them, tell them they're dead and shit. Sorta useless but cool.
This is some top tier bait, mate. I'm stealing it.

Magic > tech
Chase Jones
It's a troika game so that means it's good and has a ton of attention to detail in it but it also means it's buggy and unfinished. All in all it's one of the best RPGs out there though with a unique setting and tons of viable ways to build your character.
Samuel Wilson
for magic
get harm
thats all you need to do well
Levi Gomez
a u casul?
Elijah Turner
It's in the current humble bundle as well, might be worth looking into if you're going to pay for it. Troika is dead though so don't feel guilty about pirating it.
Leo Reed
Does it require a community patch to finish the game a la Bloodlines?
Christopher Williams
It's clunky, broken pos, but it is still the best cRPG I have ever played.
Don't waste your skillpoints and have a clear-ish vision about your character and stick to that.
Save often, and use multiple slots.
Have fun and experiment, I don't think there is nothing else to say.
Evan Adams
It's beatable without any patches it's just obvious that certain things in the game weren't as fleshed out as they would have liked.
Juan Lee
>there's a fucking disintegrate spell >can disintegrate a lot of objects on the map including doors loved that shit
Angel Martinez
Magic is broken as fuck for combat compared to tech but you can't shit money grenades with gunpowder and trash from garbage can. With magic you're also dependent on RNG gods to get good magic loot while techie can just make or buy it (or have followers make it for you).
And pack some heavy heat when exploring dwarven caves.
Evan Allen
disintegrate one shots everything in the game except the last boss, having that and teleport is all you need
Carter Harris
it also destroys all enemy gear so it's not without downsides
Nolan Foster
3 unkillable wolves/10

Reality warning. When people say "It's one of the great classics" they mean "It's great for the same reasons the classics were". If you liked games like Baldur's Gate or Fallout you will probably like Arcanum, but if not, you're just in for a romp through a patched-up mess of unrefined ideas, unfinished maps, the same few music tracks mercilessly reused over and over again, jarring faux-Victorian writing, and a general lack of polish.
Also for the love of god don't try a ranged technologist or a diplomancer on your first playthrough.
Cameron Green
It didn't really matter by the time I got it, I didn't need anything, I was still wearing the tuxedo suit from the beginning and had no weapons. I just went around by myself and zapped everything with harm and disintegrate, I think I had some golems too.
Michael Hall
If you can use disintegrate as a combat spell you don't really need gear or money anymore.
Nolan Edwards
Wolves hunt in packs.
Evan Carter
So do level 30 wererats apparently.
Gavin Perez
It is archaic and boring. You should play Overwatch instead.
Carson Sanders
Thanks for the input fellas, I'm going to give it a whirl. I'm not going to be checking in on the thread much more but feel free to run with it.
Nolan Stewart
It's really fucking good. The setting is really nice, it has that great sense of choice and consequence that isn't trying too hard like you see today. The few characters with voice acting have really great voice acting, the side quests are great, the main adventure is epic, the important characters and companions are great. I hear that it's super dated, but I played it with a bug that made it run 6x slower and I got through the whole thing without ragequitting more than 4 times. Upgrading skills is a bit annoying though, but it lets you customize the hell out of your character.
Owen Martinez
Also, you should DEFINITELY read the manual. It's really great and goes into great detail about how the magic and technology, and history and races actually work.
