What does Sup Forums think of StarCraft?
What does Sup Forums think of StarCraft?
Sup Forums requires more minerals.
Sup Forums must construct additional pylons.
First game is a highly influential timeless masterpiece & needs to be in some future gaming Smithsonian for it's contribution to E-Sports, especially in South Korea
Sequel is crap, though the 2007 version at Blizzcon seemed a lot better, but now happily married Chris Metzen's influence on the story lead it into a sharp decline & the developers over focus on E-sports balance made it a very boring & safe game
One of the greatest games ever.
We generally have starcraft threads when the ASL airs, so come by on monday or tuesday at 5 AM est. However we're basically all terrible at the game so if you want in-depth discussion or serious matches go elsewhere.
b0xer 4ever
all hail, king of the losers
Im pretty happy BW is making a comeback, I didn't really like SC2 that much.
a masterpiece but unfortunately has led people to believe that blizzard has a talent for game balance, not realizing that BW is the exception to the rule.
Pretty much perfect. Great gameplay, each race was balanced very well, the story was pretty grimdark and pure 90s sci-fi but had some pretty great moments and characters as well as fucking kickass cutscenes. Online was amazing, full of great custom games as well as competition.
Sequel has nice cutscenes I guess...
Wasn't BM balanced by mistake?
Name one game that even comes close.
The cover art looks pretty good too, minimalist and all.
It's already been surpassed.
>Over rated but good game. AoE II is better.
That used to be 'what Sup Forums thinks of it'. Now I guess people just like it.
Not even close
What was 2007 SC2 like?
still the best RTS on so many levels.
bw was good
sc2 is trash
still can't beat a bot after all those years
i dread to go online
ever since custom maps came out to Dota2 they remade almost all custom games from SC and W3
It's the only RTS I liked, and it was one of the first online games I played.
literally the best rts ever 10/10 gotyay
better to watch than sc2 too
the first builds showed off a lot of crazy stuff, like SCVs building Thors and Battlecruisers being upgradeable with 3 different weapons
also the phoenix had an overload ability which made it deal a shitload of damage but then it got disabled for a few seconds
also photon cannons could relocate themselves
see wiki.teamliquid.net
Starcraft 1 and Starcraft 2 are both great games in different ways with a lot of depth and an almost unreachable skill ceiling. Liking or not liking them comes down to personal preference and opinion.
I like watching both BW and SC2. No other esports come close to either. BW is too much to play though, I occasionally play SC2
It was also much much slower than current SC2, on par with WC3 speed i'd say.
But there is tons of stuff in the game that is cooler than those things. So you would like the game if it had those random abilities in it?
I liked that the Terrans were all either Southerners or Russian.
I wish Starcraft 2 never came out and they just remastered Broodwar.
I am not the guy who posted I like it as it is to be honest
the Thor / BC upgrade stuff was extremely cool though
BW is fantastic.
SC2 is a giant pile of shit.
>Battlecruisers being upgradeable with 3 different weapons
I've always thought there should be more unit specific weapon upgrades instead of general ones. It'd be a neat mechanic
I liked Wings of Liberty, but the 1 year of "Swarm Host mob vs Swarm Host mob" during Heart of the Swarm just killed it for me.
No idea what legacy of the void is like.
>apm simulator
>click click click click click click
Look how great I am at strategy
:^)
blizzard painted the broad strokes but competitive map makers fine tuned the game's balance.
SCBW is one of the best games ever made.
About 6 months before LOTV they changed the swarm host because it was ruining the gameplay.
LOTV made the game way better. There is less mineral in each mineral patch meaning that you have to expand earlier and more frequently, which also means you have more territory to protect, so it becomes less death ball on death ball and more skirmishes all over the map and smaller battles. Also the units added are very tactical or area control based. The Liberator and Lurker for example can control areas similar to tanks and lurkers in SC1 (still not to the same degree of course), the Disruptor and the Adept are very tactical and interesting units to have in the mix as well.
They made quite a few changes to existing units as well.
This is the truest statement ever. No RTS is just "balanced", it's completely dependent on what the maps are. Map makers are the biggest definers of balance in Starcraft 1 and 2.
so you mean like a moba????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
ASL is going on currently
flash, jaedong, stork and bisu all made it into the round of eight
>I liked that the Terrans were all either Southerners or Russian.
I think you missed a lot of units
no, I mean like a really fucked up RTS
You can individually upgrade overlords with drop capability now, it's actually really useful for zerg in every game phase.
Zerg is broken
Protoss needs a buff
>the Disruptor and the Adept are very tactical and interesting units to have in the mix as well.
oh please. The disruptor is a "pray for a good shot" unit that's the poor mans reaver and the adept is a braindead massable unit that is way too good in high numbers
I miss the League vs Starcraft shitposting
You wanna know what LOTV is like?
Well, remember all those 'good clicking simulator' memes back when SC2 general was still on Sup Forums?
Yeah, they decided to make all those memes into reality. LOTV is so gookclick that even the Koreans themselves complained the game is too fast and too hard.
literally GOAT
they doubled the amount of workers you start with and reduced the amount of minerals per base by like 30%
awful
truly awful
I do wonder how many people fell for that shit.
>liberator
A literal crutch unit. For a whole year of LOTV, every single terran basically said that the Lib is the only good unit they have.
>Lurker
I'll give you that, Zerg needed a ground control unit....oh wait, they didn't, this isn't BW, Zerg is about being swarmy and playing on speed and counterattacks, not ground control.
>disruptor
THE most stupid addition to the game. Are you Plat or higher? It's useless againt you.
Are you Plat or lower? Makes you quit the game.
Because 'look away for a second and lose all your army' is what the game needed.
>Adept
A literal crutch unit as well. Remember when the first 6 months of LOTV were literally just 2base glaive Adept all-ins?
Really? Nice.
That's what I liked about Starcraft. Perfect play being impossible and the winner is whoever sucked the least at the game. I'll probably check it out.
>THE most stupid addition to the game. Are you Plat or higher? It's useless againt you.
>Top Protoss pros use Disruptors with money and career on the line
Because they had no other viable choice.
The colossus got nerfed to the ground, so not that many AOE options for them. Disruptors were mainly a thing in PvP anyway and sometimes PvZ vs Lurkers.
i like how everything moves in a giant perfect ball
not in BW
Lets fucking go gemuchi, ugly fucker got a hot plastic filled gf just by being good at bw
Last great game Blizzard made.
Last one paid money for.
how is warcraft 3 not good
Interms of single player: Sc1 and its expansion, Broodwar are 10/10 fun
sc2 is not bad but not amazing either
interms of Multiplayer (as a player): sc2 is alot of fun, from the ladder system to the co-op missions to team games its all there and easy enough to get a game going pretty quick
Interms of Multiplayer (as a spectator): BW is where it is at son
if you ignore the story, sc2 is more fun to play
every bw mission is here's 2 scv's and a supply depot, build everything again
The colossus got nerfed, what? It got buffed m8, attack speed increase.
With Colossus, High Templar, Archons and Disruptors I don't think Protoss have a lack of AOE.
Anyway you seem to think that the only way to use disruptors is to just hope for the lucky hit when the opponent isn't looking that just wins you the game. That is something that can happen of course, but when both players are good that's very rare. The point of disruptors is to zone out and control the movements of the other army. If you fire out a disruptor shot they HAVE to move away OR try to pounce and snipe the disruptor before the nova goes off which is very risky. It's an area control ability. You see pros firing shots into areas to prevent the opponents army getting into good positions.
Yes this, SC1 campaigns are pretty bland
I liked the zerg one where you had to kill the overmind with DTs
also SC2 could doesn't really have pure steamroll missions at all which is a bit of shame
I really fucked up that sentence
There was much more cut than that
The story was changed drastically because of Metzen, more into a love story to be exact
One of the more striking differences is in 2007 it had a much darker tone & Raynor's crew hated him, felt much more in line with SC1's atmosphere, in the final game it's quite cheesy how everyone loves Raynor's, the civil war in the Koprulu sector was turned from some Caesar era conflict into a Disney Good vs Evil affair
As for gameplay, tons of risque innovative shit was cut because of E-Sports focus, like a level where Lava would rise over Mineral deposits to keep Multiplayer more dynamic, or true end game units like the Mothership, which was extremely powerful with numerous abilities, etc etc
Compared to HOTS? The Colossus is a husk of it's old self. Which would be a good thing if they gave them something less a-movy to compensate, but instead they turned the whole race into 'i'm gonna throw gimmicks at you till you ragequit'.
Archons are not great. Their main usage is to soak up damage, low range and below average speed makes them pretty bad vs everything that's not a zergling.
HTs can be decent in lower leagues, but as people learn how to control their armies they become less and less useful.
As you said, disruptors are mainly used to zone each other and force risky blinks in PvP. You sometimes see it as harassment in PvT and sometimes vs Lurkers in PvZ, but the unit is either extremely cost efficient or dead supply.
>The story was changed drastically because of Metzen
in one interview he said he wanted Raynor to have a drinking problem but got talked down by other writers
but yeah, he really can't really write grimdark stuff anymore since he has kids
I said it's not great.
Armies are too small for my liking, the 3D characters don't look very good, the story started to get very silly, and I generally didn't appreciate the focus on heroes.
Not pissing on it. It just didn't really do it for me.
LotV was a fucking disaster, it's actually worse than WoL in every aspect. Adepts are cancer, Ravagers are cancer, Liberators are cancer, Cyclones are just shitty Goliaths, Burrow-fungal Infestors are cancer. The only positive thing that can be said about LotV is that it's not 4 hour turtlefests.
LOTV was actually really fun in one of the beta patches when they removed Macro Mechanics
What a shame they chickened out, fuck the E-sports scene, they don't even play it anyway
you can almost say the same about hots: proxy oracle, hellbat drops, widowmine drops, swarm hosts
blizzard have only made the game worse since midway through wings it's a crying shame
I fucking wish Cyclones were shitty Goliaths, but they are far, far from that, unfortunately.
They used to be a unit you made one of to stay safe from oracles/banshees, now they're literally an all-in unit that you make 4 of to put pressure and never make them again.
We're talking about the dev team had allowed Broodlord+Infestor ruin the game for a year and a half just so foreigners had a chance vs Koreans (there's a tl article about it) and then allowed Swarm Host cancer for a year.
By the way, swarm hosts are even more obnoxious now, so good luck with that.
>swarm hosts are even more obnoxious now, so good luck with that.
only if you play mech, in which case you're being equally obnoxious
Yeah, god forbid terrans have any other option than 2-1-1 16marine drop into bio liberator or bio mine.
I don't remember the last time I saw a pro TvZ that the terran DIDN'T go 2-1-1.
But yeah, you're right, having more ways to play the game is bad.
there's always 3rax reaper
Which is one of the most obnoxious things in the game and should have been removed a long time ago.
That's like someone complaining about Protoss not having alot of options back in WOL and someone replying 'there's always 4gate'.
ded gaem
SC2 needs a big revival, but Blizz's focus on HOTS is probably going to make that not happen
Well they are running a smallish tournament right now. Got the old greats like Flash, Jaedong, Bisu and Stork in there.
...
They're focusing HOTS? I'm pretty sure their focus is on games that actually make them money, memewatch and Heartstone.
And yeah, the game will be abandonware played by 200 people on private ladders by 2018 and that's fine with Activision, it's not making them money anyway.
As someone who bought the base games and the DLC missions.
Fuck Metzen and his forced stories, god damn they're awful and the only "good" thing with SC2 is the co-op commanders, which gets boring as fuck after you've leveled one to 10.
Gameplay of SC2's campaign, great.
But it's not a RTS.
You need to expand the image before you save it user
>almost all custom games from SC and W3
>almost all
>from both SC and WC3
Have you any idea how many maps that would be
Anyone know if this is going to be streamed on Twitch?
If it is, there will be a link an the top right when it starts (under "live events")
Frankly considering Blizzard's fanbase auti...dedication that wouldn't surprise me.
They completely remade SC1 and BW campaign on SC2 and WCIII was WiP
Bisu vs Sea 85:15
Best vs Hero 15:85
Flash vs Guemchi 90:10
Stork vs Jaedong 45:55
Bisu vs Hero 55:45
Flash vs Jaedong 75:25
Flash vs Bisu 60:40
>SC2
>Raynor is a rebel
>Shits out marines, siege tanks etc
>None of his officers care if he just loses 100 men in a mission
Yeah sounds like mediocre gimmicks. It's like if Swarm Host was cut for being a retarded cancerous unit, then someone going "ohhh man SC2 sucks there was this awesome rad unit that could spawn 2 zerg units as an attack but they cut it!". The story was probably much better though.
The problem is they unironically made artificial clicking a thing by creating the mule/queen larvae injection/chrono boost and giving everything an ability when people are clicking enough just managing their armies and bases normally.
>15:85
The fuck is that time ? Wouldn't that be 16:25 ?
I don't do ladder or unranked or anything, but I have guiltlessly bought every new co-op commander so far and will continue to do so for as long as they keep producing new co-op content.
Think those are odds of victory user.
korea operates on a 100 minute clock, didn't you know?
AND HERE WE GO.
Oh fuck I'm a complete imbecile.
As an excuse my coffee machine broke this morning so.
Fun fact, when France created the metric system, the wanted to make hours decimals, so you'd have 10 hours a day, 100 minutes an hour and 100 seconds a minute.
It didn't catch on because most of the clockmakers of the time were Royalist and it was a really freaking ugly system.
>2000
>I'm 12 years old and had another awkward embarrassing day at middle school
>Go home on a Friday and play Starcraft on my imac while waiting for mommy to bring home dinner
I miss this in hindsight
