I grew up with the SNES and I played the three DKC games. I even liked pic related. But right now I'm playing TP, and it's amazing. The level design, the enemy and hazard obstacle placement, the timing of your jumps, it's the best. It's like the evolution of the SNES games, everything is bigger and more creative. The scope itself is bigger.

The music is great too, on par with the SNES trilogy.

Don't listen to the haters, TP is the next step in the dkc evolution.

TF beats all the other games in the series by a wide margin, speaking as a pretty hard nostalgiafag for DKC1 & 2. I love the artstyle but it isn't conducive to platforming, it's hard to see when exactly a platform "ends" and the background mixes a little too well with the foreground at times

Tropical Freeze is really solid, but I think it might be slightly overrated. I just finished it yesterday, the first three worlds are awesome and then it all goes downhill from there. The last boss is ridiculously tedious (inb4 "LE GIT GUD XDXDDD", he's tedious because you have to wait ten thousand years for anything to happen and then get a small window to hit him and then have to wait another ten thousand years). And the music, while good, doesn't really have any stand-out tracks. The sound design in general is the worst of the bunch, DK's Scooby-Doo impressions are weaker than Returns, and the fanfare from bonus stages is more toned down than ever before.

What makes Tropical Freeze good is the level design. And it is damn good. It just feels like it's missing something. If they complete the trilogy and bring back Kremlings, I could see that allowing them to make the best DK game of all time.

I loved Returns and think I might have liked it more than Tropical Freeze. But a big part of that is that I simply don't like ice or viking themes very much.

Also, it seems like rolling was somehow easier in returns despite being linked to wagglan. I could consistently roll-jump from standing position for huge momentum in Returns, whereas in TF I found it a lot less reliable.

this is a recurring feature of retro's game designs, and honestly it's the one thing they consistently get wrong. metroid prime's final form was another great example of this, but there's a ton of metroid prime bosses that suffer from the same issue.

I can remember every individual track from Tropical Freeze. Returns was a bunch of garbage rearrangements of old tracks that managed to sound less lively and the final half was rejected songs from Metroid Prime.

I like the Wii U, though. I think it's criminally underrated. What tracks stand out as memorable from Tropical Freeze? All I can remember are remasters from the original trilogy, and I played the game literally just yesterday.

I'm not saying it has bad music, just that it isn't so memorable. Returns is exactly the same in that regard.

I don't think Kremlings would automatically make it better, but they thematically would be better than penguins and seals. It just fits better as a natural enemy of apes. And of course the nostalgia/legacy factor plays as an additional bonus.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure in DKC you roll at the press of a button, and have to crouch to ground pound. In TF you do the ground pound just standing still. So in order to roll you have to be moving, and in TF, DK has a weird start-up before running that messed me up, especially when trying to roll-jump from a ledge or other tricky situations. That's all.
