Now that the dust has settled, what does Sup Forums think of the steam controller?

bump

I got one for christmas. It's super comfy for games that don't need the trackpads (although in that case why not just get a normal controller).

The paddles on the bottom are nice.

The D-pad trackpad is weird to use as a d-pad, but it works.

The other trackpad works, but takes getting used to.

All in all it's usable, but I wouldn't usually recommend it over other controllers.

I like it but what I love is the customization through the overlay API thing

it would be amazing for games that dont have controller support if every top used user made profile wasnt made by fucking retards who make some retarded bindings like left click to left trigger and right click to right trigger

It's fucking god like, I can play games on my laptop whilst sitting down stairs with the family.

I like it. I don't really know what niche it fills though. It's not as good as a kB+m, but it's not as good as a normal controller either. It's a weird halfway point.

What it excels in is playing games that normally have NO controller support, since you can bind EVERYTHING to EVERYTHING. If you want to get comfy with a controller but your game doesn't support controllers, steam Controller is the best option.

It's also the single best way to navigate your desktop on a TV while sitting on a couch. I don't have cable, I just have my PC connected to my TV with HDMI and watch Netflix and YouTube and pirate things using my steam Controller. It has a built in keyboard function that pops up when you click the left stick anywhere on your desktop.

Got it on release and still gets used. essentailly replaced the xbox controller on the few games that i prefered it on. good if you are far from keyboard and mouse but can see screen (in bed ect)
changed the batteries like 3 times after a lot of use over year

It's outright better than a normal controller for some games, worse for others, it depends how tightly designed the control schemes are.

I can't stop using it, sometimes I just play games for the sake of using the controller.

This is another thing I was amazed about it. I bought myself a set of 4 rechargeable AA batteries and a charger for them thinking that I could always have a backup to swap them out and charge the other ones. I've had to change them once in 6 months.

It's great.

Been using it for two months. D-pad is shit, other than that it's pretty good.
But maybe that's just me, I could get used to basically anything

Is the dpad actually bad other than the fact it doesn't click down? Lightly dragging my finger to get an input sounds good to me

You can click it down(although it's pretty tight so you need to apply more force than with usual gamepads), it just doesnt feel like a proper D-pad, it's too smooth. Because of that I usually miss some inputs so I prefer to use a stic

works great for me. It's an awesome controller for 3rdperson games and emulation

Got it yesterday. Build quality is great.

But I found that basically in every game you need to reconfigure it because most of the time the default or the community settings don't work and especially the right mouse pad or whatever the fuck it is needs to be tested and adjusted every fucking game.

It works then. I had some fun with furi on it (before adjusting it it was unusable and I had to do it mid boss fight). But I think 99% of the time a right analog stick would just be better for the games I play. I haven't used it all that much but I'm pretty sure you'd be retarded if you think you can play CSGO with it and perform similarly. It's just not worth learning the whole mouse pad thing just to have a worse mouse, then why not just make it right analog?

D-Pad is sexy as fuck, Use the Joystick for movement and the Dpad as a button pad

Practice and you will be good with CSGO at it, only thing about the controller is you need to practice and it takes time. I have a small feeling you could be better than a mouse with enough practice.

Controller FPS with mouse-level reaction times and accuracy.

>Lightly dragging my finger to get an input sounds good to me
You can click the whole pad, like a thumbstick. You can click at each direction, like a normal dpad. Or you can swipe in a direction, which isn't as good as it may sound.

It looks okay but isn't that comfortably to use, In my opinion it loses to xbox360 D-pad in some cases. But since I can customize it it doesnt bother me that much

One of the bumper broke on me just after a year. I went out and bought a replacement anyway, So I guess I got used to it. I mostly use it for emulators.

Best controller ever.
Nothing can compare to it.
It's fine as is and you can costumize it any way you want.
It does have a steep learning curve tho and customizing it for the first time can seem overwhelming.
But you can simply grab other people's configurations.

Im genuinely curious about them still, I never see them talked about, but Sup Forums really only talks about retro controllers because they either love/hate them.

Also its worth noting this place is flooded with normies to the same level reddit is, so theres all sorts of backward stupid opinions from people who barely play vidya in the first place. I have to remind myself every day that im posting among young millenials and normie faggots who only post here because its mainstream now.

Millenials are people born from 1980 to 1995

you can do that with the dual shock 4 now too

Fine, people born in the early 2000s who didn't live through the same changes.

i like mine, although i havent perfected configuring the right pad for joystick camera controls just yet. otherwise it's a solid 8/10 in my book

My issue with the dpad is that the indentation is very slight. It's tricky to make sure you're actually clicking the right direction.

camera controls dont seem very good to me but ive only played with it for like an hour. ill give it a real chance with some new release one day

>It's fine as is
should have a real d-pad in place of the left analogue stick

otherwise, I agree.

The tl;dr version is this: best controller by far unless you need a real D-pad or you're too retarded to figure out how to customize profiles

good hardware, bad software

needs to be more functional outside of steam without driver hacks
it's a pc controller, give more access to the ability to let it to control than a fucking console controller

really good for some games
absolute shit for others

this

Bull shit Dpad is meant to be used as a button pad not directional. Then I think you'll find its perfect.

No this, I find it easy.

It's great as a media remote

People who bitch about it for FPS like all the lazy reviewers didn't set up the Gyro

i like it but I only play a couple games where I would actually prefer a controller to kb/mouse

only fighting and driving games basically, and I only have a few

i kind of want to use it for rpg games but the muscle memory learning curve is kinda high so I just use kb/mouse

Depends on the game and on preference. If you never use it for directional control then yes, Steam controller is the ideal choice.

Nah, the left analog stick is useful and nice to have for movement control, that's where sticks are best at anyway. "Analog" movement from one of the touch pads is weird as fuck, the stick is a good thing. Maybe they should've had 4 buttons under the left touch pad so it'd be closer to a real D-pad in feel when using it.
