You're not. You're meant to just run into the goomba until you run out of lives. Super Mario Bros. was meant to be a short artsy game about the ultimate futility of trying in life. One of the programmers snuck in the jump mechanic and the entire rest of the game as an easter egg.

You could jump over it which you would do after the first couple of times it kills you if you aren't retarded.

At this point, anyone capable of learning will accept that touching the goomba is not good. Their next try, they jump over the goomba. Eventually, they'll mistime a jump and realize that a goomba dies when hit from above.

It feels almost like basic instinct and common sense when you first see it. I mean, the damn thing is even shaped kinda like a button if you look at it
