i kinda don't like that photogrammetry right now is usually a shortcut for incapable artists
though i do think it's the future for realism
it's interesting to see for some things, like RE7, that they're basically leaning toward using practical effects and then digitalizing them with photogrammetry. sort of like old doom and other games using clay models and turning them into sprites.

it's not that either of them are bad themselves, but big games mindlessly decide to try and go for them, they have no good reason to, they just do it. usually without consideration for the game as a whole or design or anything

Still an improvement. Graphics have stagnated and any advancement is good.
The problem is that the next "jump" is night imposible to do while rendering real time, running physics simulations, receiving player input, running AI, etc.
Using ray tracing (or some aproximation) for everything instead of just for shadows, non-shit hairs, etc.
Animations and CGI already did those jumps almost two decades ago, but that's because they don't need to render real-time (see Zootopia, where each frame took a average of 100 hours to frame. Those things are actually rendered on huge server farms).

but we're reaching a point where graphics that aren't styled can be good enough for years to come, Crysis 1 still looks great 10 years later. I doubt we'll be looking back on Witcher 3 and GTA V in 10 years thinking the games look ugly.

Crysis 1 was head and sholders above every one other game of it's time. While I'll give you the others, but I think that in the future we will look back at those games and details (lack very precise shadows, smaller res than future screens, weird reflections, etc) will look weird to us.

Photo realism is cheaper now, also way easier than hiring creative artists and making models from scratch. They just scan the actors face/body and call it a day.
The correct answer is 2007. I haven't seen a AAA game released that has beaten Crysis with mods yet.

BF1 is graphically impressive in parts. My point is that graphics have stagnated. I haven't seen something with a graphical leap like Crysis since.
