As far as I can tell, Ardyns fuck up was how he chose to handle his downfall. Noctis had to die ( or enter the "afterlife") to pay for his power, and accepted that condition.
Ardyn did his good deed and expected to be rewarded for it - and when he wasn't acknowledged by the crystal/light - he took it personally.

I don't find the exclusion of a lot of the politics and """"worldbuilding""" in FFXV to be that grievous of an offense because the story isn't about the Empire or the Kingdom, it's about four guys in a car and the bonds of brotherhood that form between them.

I get what you are going for, but the game still handled the big picture too badly even if the focus was on the four main characters. There's just no excuse for how badly the plot was told.

It's certainly flawed in a lot of ways, but I feel like the supposed criticisms are overblown because people are used to Final Fantasy having needlessly grandiose plots that explain every single autistic detail of the world
Final Fantasy XV is about creating a personal connection through the player's own experiences and relationship with the four main characters. The last campfire and the photo you chose being at Noctis' side in the afterlife was a lot more meaningful than needlessly explaining why the Emperor was evil (because he's a bad guy durrrr) or why Ravus was a mopey faggot

Has anyone thought that absorbing all of the demons changed Ardyns personality and made him a bad guy? Maybe that's part of the reason why the lucii didn't accept him, not just because he absorbed demons. Just finished the game an hour ago, almost made me cry but I'm bummed it just sends you back to your last save. Wish we could play a little bit in the future that we saved
the relationship we get with the main characters isn't handeled all that well either. Gladio gets angry with Noctis multiple times for reasons that are poorly explained to the player which is why so many people think he's just an asshole, Ignis really doesn't have a real stand out moment in the story, he just goes blind with no explanation and everyone feels bad for him. Prompto was handeled the best out of the main group but his MT thing is just dropped and doesn't effect the group's relationship at all so it may as well not be a thing. I get a lot of stuff is held back for dlc but it still harms the supposed good part of the story. Oh and I forgot to talk about Luna but I really don't think I need to explain how poorly she was handeled.

He was probably just so disillusioned at the gods' injustice that it made him feel like the world wasn't worth shit if it's gods are such shitbags. It probably made him a little crazy, and time just made it worse. He is not a good guy at that point obviously, because that's precisely the mentality of a bad guy, and his revenge is unreasonable disregard for innocent people.
Nonetheless, it's not hard to see how he was driven to such cynicism. In real life someone with his attitude could easily be regarded as an angsty, immature, cynic, but in his world it's not like he just read some Schopenhauer and became edgy; he actually has legit reasons for being driven to that point of view.

Well noct trained his whole life, had to do really specific and well timed things and had his company's help to achieve their power, so it's not that easy. Plus they're basically testing him to see if he's worthy to use their power and it's towards their own goal, they're not malevolent
