Yes, official ranking:
8 > DS > Wii > 7 > DD > Super > 64 > SC
In my opinion, it is.
The two biggest complaints I generally see are relating to the roster and battle mode. I'm happy with Shy Guy and I heavily prefer regular races, only playing battle when my friends want to, so those don't effect me. I can just enjoy the tight controls and shit ton of amazing courses.
Still plenty to fix:
12 racers (not fixed, in fact, they doubled the Items)
Vertical splitscreen in 2P (confirmed still broken in the Switch trailer)
Getting hit in midair
Firehopping
Not enough choices for Battle Mode compared to prior entries, elimination-only
And for my taste:
Fucking Coins
Fucking Backdraft
FUCKING BUTCHERED RAINBOW ROAD N64
And we still don't really know if the Switch version will fix the Roster and Battle.
For me, yes. 7 and DS are good too but 8 has got proper online play, bigger roster and better soundtrack.
Double Dash is a gen 6 babbies' mene.
>four posts in
>people stating sane opinions instead of nostalgiafagging over shit like 64 and DD
Guess I found the one good thread on Sup Forums today.
DD had Bob-Omb Battle though. Can't hate it for that.
If ask me, 7 edges it out due to little things like the course selection, but are good
>Fucking Coins
I'm not mad that they're back, I'm mad that they're in the item rotation
Also it just took me until now to realize they removed fake item boxes
You can debate it's gameplay but it has the best sound track out of them by far.

Vanilla? No. With DLC, yeah I think so. It has enough courses and replay ability to still keep me coming back. Also, the feel and look of the game is top notch to me. Looks like a Pixar movie. Battle Mode is fucked, but sometimes I'll hop on and do it and it can bring a small amount of entertainment.
That's what makes MK8's glaring flaws like the continued Item insanity and parts so tragic.
Otherwise, Snaking is gone, great turning radii, graphics are pretty nice, music is great, tracks are a mixed bag with some real gems in there, a lot to like.
It's so fucking shit how being in last place gives you nothing but OP power ups and being in first gives you nothing at all
When did chinks become full blown communists
I know this shit was always in the game and I always thought it was cool but they took it way too far recently, it's gay as fuck
not nearly as bad as previous games though. In Mario Kart Wii 3-4 blue shells would go off per round and I hardly see 1 or even 2 go off in 8.
Being in first gets you away from the shitpit. Don't waste shells and you're pretty much invincible in first unless you get a ton of blue shells thrown at you. The red shells are rarely a problem.
Still bad enough to ruin the fun.
t. Party hoster
Is it completely balanced? Fuck no. But, as for actually fucking over first place, I think it does a decent job of limiting the blue shell to be a more rare item. I actually just played online the other day and did 7 races. Out of 5 of them, there wasn't a single blue shell. Anecdotal, I know, but still, it seems like first place fucking is not as bad as people make it. I think it's worse for people who in the middle actually and that's where I tend to get fucked over the most.
>gets you away from the shitpit
Someone hasn't played online with other good players.
I haven't played in awhile but I believe I was close to 2k in the first few months. Assumed that was decent. May have even past that.
I prefer the Wii one. It has more depth, and a higher skill ceiling.
Can you imagine a game with both coin items and fake item boxes?
200cc as free DLC was amazing and turned the game into a much different one. I hope it becomes a staple.
...
Fuck off with your memes.
>Is it the best Mario Kart?
Wouldn't know, they released it for a console no fucker purchased.
>Super > 64
Fuck you
You have to get very far ahead, and usually it's the people that item farm at the beginning, not necessarily the people who raced best, that take that lead.
>everything i disagree on is a meme
What a great argument.
>no fucker purchased.
8 million sales
>coins
I'd rather eat kale.
>FUCKING BUTCHERED RAINBOW ROAD N64
I actually feel it's an improvement, especially the music.
I like mario party 8 am I meme yet? :^)
no seriously mario kart wii was meh tier at best
You're referring to the game, right?
We've already dissected Wii in detail.
Go find unintended shortcuts elsewhere.
>higher skill ceiling.
>literally just pick a bike to win
also the rubberbanding was the worst of the series in that game - with items like the bullet bill sometimes taking you all the way to first since it didn't account for how far you actually were behind the other racers (only what position you were [e.g. 5th place]). MK8 fixed all of this.
Wasn't firehopping "fixed" by 200cc?
Or are you one of those fags that still plays 150cc?
Depends on the map. It's far easier to take short cuts in first than back in the shitpit.
The music maybe (needs more synth), but the track is missing firework versions of more characters, the Chain Chomps changed, the track layout is just trash and somehow more boring than the original, and the track isn't 3 Laps where the Items' equalization plus the time lapsed made the last lap a white knuckle competition.
My understanding is it's still there.
I'm more of a Battle guy, and flat out refuse to even try exploits otherwise. That includes drastic shortcuts.
Yeah, good luck getting a Mushroom in first. Something that Super DID do right - put the emphasis on driving well.
All of the non-circuit courses are hot garbage. They're neat in concept but in practice they're completely terrible, with hardly any means of saving time or catching up if you fall behind. Get fucked over once, and you're more than likely to be fucked for the rest of the race.
>Yeah, good luck getting a Mushroom in first. Something that Super DID do right - put the emphasis on driving well.
Being first lets you drive the line you want and power slide how you want. Being back in the shitpit doesn't let you do that easily.
What? Are unintended shortcuts bad, because you're too bad to pull them off?
>literally just pick a bike to win
But other people use bikes too
>playing against AI
The rubber band effect is easy to evade when your good enough
As much as I agree with that, first place should still be driving optimally so that they don't fall back into the shitpit AND then it just becomes an unfun grind for everyone else.
No, because there's generally two elements to those:
1. Must have prior knowledge of said shortcut/exploit (e.g. the cannon in Maple Treeway)
2. How large of a swath of the track it skips
RR64 had some risk/reward to it, but it was still frowned upon for skipping half of the track.
Why are we having this discussion? This is old hat, said a million times before. And better.
>defending the bike problem in mario KART wii
>defending rubberbanding
next you'll tell me the abundance of hackers in mkwii's online was also a good thing.
Yeah but I hated the battle mode
>As much as I agree with that, first place should still be driving optimally so that they don't fall back into the shitpit AND then it just becomes an unfun grind for everyone else.
Like I said before I haven't played the game in awhile. In the first year at what I thought was a pretty competent rating of 2k+ most maps came down to saving a red/blue shell to help you get into first and then just driving well to victory. Getting a red shell into a green shell and getting first place was the goal. Or if you got lucky and got into first off the bat. 99% of players will waste red shells in the shitpit instead of throwing them at the 1st/2nd leaders.
Outside of super rng garbage like getting a bullet bill, first place had a huge advantage.
150cc is way more fun desu. 200cc breaks the game and most tracks don't work like they're supposed to.
It's my favorite. Battle mode is a giant disappointment though.
>Must have prior knowledge of said shortcut/exploit
Who would have thought that you'd need some track knowledge in a game about racing.
>How large of a swath of the track it skips
That's why the one you've mentioned is banned from competition.
I don't understand what they were doing there, Nintendo did so manythings right with mk8, but for some reason decided to not even bother with adding a proper battle mode.
>200cc breaks the game
>150cc is so unbalanced that only heavyweights are viable
nah m8, 150cc is boring shit
I'm actually one of the few that really liked MK Wii, but might as well use the disc as a frisbee after MK8 came out.
heavyweights are only viable in timetrial or with no items.
And nobody not autistic plays like that anyway
People getting together to play Mario Kart casually don't have that. They should have a nice bright ramp or something like Koopa Troopa Beach N64.
Seriously? Hm. There's hope for a competitive scene yet, if the programming would just not suck.
quite literally everyone who plays 150cc online is autistic then
Second best, I prefer Wii overall because of its tracks.
>We need a stage from Double Dash
>I know! Let's do Dry Dry Desert!
bingo
Its only real failing is the shit battle mode, and despite that, the core racing is so good it's still possibly the best. DS is the other acceptable choice.
>only heavyweights are viable
So, like in most mario karts?
They're vastly superior in online modes too
>everyone who plays the game differently than i do is autistic.
Weeeew
right
Literally no reason to play non-heavyweights in 150. Anything else is slow as shit.
You're misunderstanding - that's the Sup Forums way of saying:
>Well that's bullshit that the game is structured in such a way that favors heavy characters and people uphold it, as opposed to allowing all types of builds and weights to be competitive. Shame on Nintendo, shame on the asshats that play on 150cc.
They don't need those when they're only playing casually.
>DS
That's still one of my favorites in terms of pure gameplay. The snaking would fuck up your thumb, but at least it added some skill to the game
Yes they do, because the skilled players WILL take it, the other players may not see them take it, and will have that clue.
They'll then see that it's fair and not an exploit as get posted on the internet, be less sore about it, and be more likely to want to play more of the game.
>Duh
This as opposed to what recent MK games have done with NO visual cues, and that includes MK8.
>in fact, they doubled the Items
NNo? max items in mk8 is 12, 1 per player, in past mk games is 2 per player so that makes it 16, mkwii has the most with 24.
Complain in the switch port if they don't let you use only one item as a option, but that is a dumb complain for now.
YYes. The damn Switch trailer showed that players could hold 2 Items at once. So where MK8 is already borderline-to-overline on Item fuckery, MK8 Switch WILL cross the line.
It's a new game and widely regarded as the best in its series? Did I wander into topsy turvy Sup Forums?
What are wrong with coins? They make you go faster.
The Wii U actually has some great games. It just gets shitposted constantly by underage and reddit.
Close but 64 is still the best.
>So where MK8 is already borderline-to-overline on Item fuckery
You sound like a crazy bitch, mk8 is one of the mario karts with less clusterfucks going on in the races, not only because there is less items per player but also because the stun time is minor to past entries.
Close, but I would rank them:
8>DS>7>DD>Wii>64>Super>SC
It easily would be if the battle mode wasn't such shit.
Bring back all the options we had in Double Dash. Give me Shine Runners and Bob-omb Blast alongside Balloon Battles. Give us actual fucking battle courses.
They're fucking nothing.
>They let first place go faster.
Not enough to fix the Item balancing/shitpit issues, so that's nil.
Furthermore, it's just more to explain to first timers (which is already a goddamned lot), more obtuse headache hoops to jump through as you play, and that much more salt in the wounds when you get hit.
>Furthermore, it's just more to explain to first timers
It's Mario Kart...
Coins are nice, because the add some more strategy to the game. You can't just stick to the optimal line, because you won't get coins that way. So you have to decide on when the best time is to go out to grab some coins.
The items are more spammable than in other games, with items like the fire flower boomerang, and the 8 thing. That's probably what he means
>literally just Funky Kong and Flame Runner: The Game
>more depth, higher skill ceiling
No, there's as much clusterfuck as usual, and while stun time might be the same, it's the same number of successive hits as MKWii.
>you're bullshitting
I just watched people play three fucking races then promptly quit here at my place. Which isn't uncommon.
We proceeded to play Bomberman Generation and had a blast.
So, fuck MK, until it gets its shit together.
Hey, I was okay with 64.
>Z is items. "Oh that makes sense."
>Jump into tight turns with R. "Good to know!"
Now, it's:
>"There's a shitton of Parts, press + to see the stats that you don't fucking understand, here's how you know whether you got an inside or outside drift bike, L is Items, R is to jump into tight turns, you can drive in water, jump on ramps to do tricks to give you a boost, collect 10 Coins to drive faster..."
>"...Fuck this."
They're not wrong.
Fire flowers have even less stun time than the regular shell and banana, they are barely a problem even if they were, and the only thing that makes the crazy 8 dangerous is the red shell and bob-omb.
>and while stun time might be the same
Well, it isn't, that's the thing. In amount of successive hits it's no worse than DD, mkWii or 7. It's far from the worst.
It's Mario Kart...
I know your generation is fucking retarded but cmon. Have a little bit of competency.
>R is to jump into tight turns
Are there really people here that don't drift, and just use the r button to jump?
It's not even about stun time. It's that you can use it multiple times at once, and have a load of fire balls bouncing around the track.
It was until they added 200cc. The courses aren't designed with the mode in mind. It is possible to git gud in 200cc, but from a game design perspective, it feels shoehorned in with the excuse of "use the brake." If later Mario Kart installments keep 200c, they should design the courses with slow and max speeds in consideration.
So why the SMK/SC hate anyway? They've been my personal favorites for years.
> it's no worse than DD, mkWii or 7. It's far from the worst.
It's still too much.
>It's Mario Kart...
A FUCKING CHILDREN'S GAME (THAT SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE PLAYED BY EARLY MINDS AND STILL ENJOYED BY ALL)
MK8's LEVEL OF COMPLICATED BULLSHIT IS NOT ENJOYABLE
Quit autistically saying the same phrase over and over just because you don't like it. I get complaints about these things from drunk newbies to young relatives to casual players my age to people I've played videogames with for 20-odd years.
>It is possible to git gud in 200cc
Git gud
But really, jokings aside, use the brakes, it's not like you need to stop drifting of moving at all, don't keep pressed the brake button, just tap it a few times to lose a little speed, enough to not go out of the track, it makes things marginally easier.
>Quit autistically saying the same phrase over and over just because you don't like it.
The irony. Nobody seems to really have a problem with Mario Kart "bullshit" but you.
>have the option to allow for a fifth player screen using Wii U's gamepad screen gimmick
>opt in favor of not doing this
Why oh why
It's not complicated at all. You're just an idiot.
Your generation is fucked.
DD>>>Wii>8>rest
You gotta understand, if I'm explaining the game to someone that has never played before, I either let them find out about Drift Boosts if everyone is anxious, or try to explain it in one sentence. And that wasn't easy with 64-Wii. If you don't tell them, they don't know, they don't have time to experiment, may not have followed the series and its gradual evolution.
Double Dash is overrated, and Wii was awful. Shit taste.
vgsales.wikia.com
Then I'll enjoy watching your complicated Mario Kart die.
I've actually found a fuck ton of the courses absolutely do feel like they were designed with 200cc in mind as you can pull of some wild shit that otherwise couldn't.
Also how is "using the brake" an excuse? It's there, it's meant to be used.
How much more piss easy can it be?
I'm serious. Your generation is fucked. How incompetent do you have to be at life to think this is complicated? Are controls that involve more than just tapping a tablet too complex to your generation?
is it just me or is 150cc awfully slow, and 200cc too fast?
>sales = quality argument
Wii U game kiddo.
You know someone doesn't have argument when they use the sales in an unrelated discussion.
Wow, a game for a console that didn't sell as well as a game for a console that sold really well
Also
>Currently, it is at 8.0 million, which is an amazing attach rate with over half of Wii U owners owning it despite it lacking bundles until months later.
From the link you posted.
Yes it is. If it had an arena battle mode it would be god tier.
I feel like the DLC courses are properly designed with 200cc in mind, but some of the vanilla courses feel too tight.
