Some crippled user made a post about this recently. I was writing like a retard trying to help the guy when it 404ed.
Gonna post the stuff in this new thread, hope you read this pal!
also, MGS general
Metal Gear Solid suggested play order
Hello pal!
If you played Revengeance and you liked it then you are prepared to go full non-canon titles and enjoy the full saga (actually Rising is canon, but is a very different take on the series, you know)
This is my guide to you user:
First of all: easiest way to play the saga is via Legacy Collection on PS3. I will list what game is not on that edition in this post.
Go release order and start from the very first one with:
-Metal Gear (1987)
You´ll know the roots of the saga and will appreciate how the series improved. Is a fun as fuck game with a bunch of surprises. Also, you´ll know from first hand the major plot point of playing as the bad guy in later games instead of pretending you know the thing like everybody who started with MGS did. MSX is the best version, and it´s the one you get on the legacy collection, except for some solved bugs and improved translation.
If you like the 2D gameplay and want to continue with the second entry in the saga...
-Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990)
biggest and prettier than his predecessor. So good that next game is almost a remake of this one, The version of the game included on Legacy Collection has brand new art by Yoji Shinkawa instead of sprites ripping off 90´s movie stars.
-Metal Gear Solid (1998)
First 3D entry of the saga. One of the most memorable games ever. Legacy Collection includes the VR Missions disc, a stand-alone "dlc" that came out back in the day with no story but shittons of virtual training missions. If you really enjoy Solid, you´ll want to play a few missions.
-Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (2000)
whoa, you expected to play the PS2 sequel of MGS? wait a minute and give this hidden gem a try. It´s not only the best game of GBC catalog, it´s perhaps the best 2D entry of the saga. Beautiful as fuck. The "mission" is not strictly canon, but the game does fit in the storyline, specially with Raiden (you´ll undestand, don´t want to spoil anything). Emulate it. (cont)

-Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2002)
Alright then, the second 3D installment of the saga. The pinnacle of the series by most fans and one of the game-changers of videogame industry. I hope you never heard about it, so I won´t spoil anything. Just expect MGS with better graphics and with a lot of fan service. Aftet all, you like snake, huh? :^)
-Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
Prepare for some travel in time to 1969. Remember that cool guy who is your boss on the first games? you are that guy now!
Technically is like MGS2 on steroids. Perhaps the finest entry in therms of pure gameplay. Legacy edition gets the Subsistance version, with improved camera and few adittions.
now, prepare. Things get a little bit shaky now
-Metal Gear AC!D (2004)
MGS GOES PORTABLE! Kojima thought PSP would never run a proper Metal Gear, so they gave Shinta Nojiri (creator of Ghost Babel) a team, and they ended up with this delicious game. Is not canon, is not action/stealth. Is a card-based game, and is amazing. Expect a LOT of love to all prior entries (even 2D ones or even non-MG Kojima games) Not included on Legacy Collection.
...If you love this weirdo, then you should try
-Metal Gear AC!D2 (2005) Never played, but basically moar of that amazing shit
Let´s continue with a "proper" entry
-Metal Gear Portable Ops (2006)
A fucking metal gear in your hands. all that you expected, but with a brand new create-your-army system. Kojima did not directed this one because he was working on MGS4, so the overall, if not most of the story is canon (only some details are not) For this reason it´s not included on Legacy Edition.
on the other hand...
-Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010)
Okay, let´s make it clear, this game was made after MGS4, and you should played it after it, but if you play Portable Ops and want moar portable crazyness, you´ll want to play this first. You also have Portable Ops + (2007) but it´s basically an online VR Missions of the first game.
Peace Walker Is basically a better PO with amazing story and improved mechanics. You have the PS3 version included on the Legacy, Later games takes a lot from this one, so don´t dare to skip it only because it´s not a numbered title.
Do you have that screencap of Venom having a stroke?
>that mangled engrish quote
nearly spit my drink
ok, last ones!
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)
Last ride of Solid Snake and the last metal gear until recent days. My personal favourite. It closes all ties on previous games and put a decent end to the saga. Very big and full of Kojima´s crazyness. this is the last game you get on the legacy collection.
MGS4 is a joke, it's so grotesquely lukewarm and much inferior to the others
I hope crippleanon doesn't listen to you. Nobody who favorite MGS is 4 is worth taking seriously
Play them in release order, feel free to play Twin Snakes and ignore what people say about it. Have fun, OP.
>feel free to play Twin Snakes and ignore what people say about it
It completely changes the "feel" of MGS1. They dial up the anime incredibly high and incredibly early. You should play PS1 MGS1 first and if you feel like it (and to laugh at the comedic cutscenes), check TTS
Ok pal. last post of the guide.
-Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014)
Remember PO and PW? for reasons, Kojima goes back with this setting on this glorified demo. Don´t get me wrong, is fun and worth getting, but serves as a prequel to the last one.
-Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)
Ok, this started with a 1987 game and it ends in a game set on that year. It heavily relies on PW mechanics, but very depurated. Kojima never properly ended it because some shit with Konami and feels like a unfinished game. But at least is fun ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
and that´s all, pal. Have fun and don´t be so sad about your legs, perhaps someday you´ll get amazing prostetics like pic related!. Have a nice day user
Im OP and I was redacting the guide for this guy: but yeah, I also skip TS since I feel it only does bad to the overall appealing of the saga
This
1-2-3-4 are main series, PW-V are a side story for digestion afterwards
Cripple user here. I went to my nearest library to order the Legacy Collection from the main library.
Thanks for all the information.
>Kojima never properly ended it because some shit with Konami and feels like a unfinished game.
There's that meme again
whoa, thought you won´t read this!
No problem man, glad to be helpful. I hope you have fun with the series and I really hope you´ll write your impressions some day here, rocking your brand new legs. Take care, pal
Everyone who posted answers and information on Metal Gear on my earlier thread and this thread and about my current disability really brightened my day.
Made me feel a whole lot better about my situation, thank you all.
mission acomplished, then.
If you feel Twin Snakes changes the tone of MGS you clearly haven't been paying attention to the other games.
or you don´t have any taste at all, therefore don´t see the diferences
Play Metal Gear 2 after you play MGS1.
