She was originally a different character designed for a game that was never intended to be a Star Fox game.

Original game by rare started a less sexualised Krystall and her brother.
You would play both nearly equally or possibly mostly as Krystal.
Miamoto shoehorned in Starfox in to it and made you play 99% of the game as Fox Mc Cloud.

The character was somewhat ok as a token female character so Nintendo put her in next 2 star fox games because Nintendo decided Dinosaur planet is canon now.

She was not in Zero because Nintendo has a boner for releasing basically the same game you already played only whit better graphics and shittier gimmicks so this is why we got Starfox zero and she was not in it same as what happened whit Metroid other M.
Assault may have not been critically acclimated but at lest it had an actual story this time and not just a reclining or the original star fox.

If you ask me Nintendo just needs to make the game play kinda like mass effect.
Not as a RPG but simply put in story segments in between missions where you can talk to the crew and get to know them better.
Possibly even romance Krystal or even put in those 2 characters from canceled star fox 2 so you have more options.

Fact is Nintendo makes games only slightly more complex than indie games but still puts a 60$ price tag on them.

Original star fox had a huge amount of character interaction for its time considering the limitations of the platform.

Hell its also one of the reasons why fans remember the game.
Zero had no technical limitations but it somehow manged to have minimal almost no story that is basically the same sit as n64 star fox.
I am pretty sure thy can find a good writer for Starfox.
