the haters

>Kojima didn't really want to make it, so he half-assed the plot even more than usual.
>The concept for the boss squad just doesn't really work.
>The levels after the first 2-3 aren't very interesting, despite the nostalgia of going back to Shadow Moses.

Other than that, it's pretty good. I wish Phantom Pain had kept building on the concept of infiltrating while a battle rages between two sides. Imagine how fun the Afghan map would be if there were hidden Mujihadeen bases you could raid/assist/rile up to distract the soviets. Heck, there's already multiple merc factions in Africa, they should have put some scripted events in where they'd skirmish with each other.

Act 3. A blast the first time though. I assumed you could remember the secret door and on your next playthrough just find your own way. NOPE

Still better than mgs5

Its actually good, yeah theres that ONE act. But the rest is good.

Its not as bad as Sup Forums makes it out to be.

Fanservice : the movie : the game

Er, sorry

Act 1 and 2 are pretty poor as far as MGS is concerned and the drebin exposition scenes are terribly done.

I thought it was good My only problem with it is the cutscenes were too damn long and just drag out sometimes.

While I didn't hate it at the time, I don't exactly look back on it fondly.

Yeah the bosses really were kind of shit, and then you'd get a codec call immediately afterwards dumping you a ton of exposition on them

Wow, that's one elaborate and well-defined opinion you got there. You should be a gaming journalist.

Liquid Ocelot is a ridiculous character with such stupid motivations that he makes Skull Face look well-written.

Totally this. And Kojima didn't half-ass the plot. It's meticulously designed to balance "shit that the fans wanted" with actually amazingly realized gameplay and meta-commentary.

It's not like it's perfect. There are bad choices and the boss fights have some problems, but I honestly think aside from 3, the MGS games have had a lot of problems with good boss fights.

The thing I love about the MGS series is that it's always theme first regarding the story. Like if Kojimbo wants to make a point about what shit things COULD be, he will fucking make a long ass cutscene of Meryl and Diarrhea-boy in a shootout proposing to each other. And the whole point is to say "I already fucking ended this, why the fuck have you been pestering to me about a sequel for all this time? Like what the fuck, no one needs that, it ended perfectly and it's up to you to imagine the rest of their lives.Or you seriously want to see? I'll fucking show you". If MGS2 100% subverted the classical sequel, MGS 4 intentionally DID the classical sequel. The one that sucks and "should not have been made". The difference is that this was AT THE SAME TIME designed to be a cutting edge gameplay experience with enough ACTUAL GOOD STUFF. Many plot elements and story elaborations in this game are necessary and fucking awesome. It's just layered on top of the shit. And the end result is one of the best games and one of the best subtexts in any game ever. And no, it's not meant to be enjoyable all the time.

Putting this in the game in the beginning is the greatest truth that this is what Kojima was aiming for. You don't have to like it, you don't have to think it's a good idea to make a game to be shit on purpose. But it's what they were aiming for, it was designed this way. Kojima even self-inserted himself in the cooking show at 0:38 because THIS COMMERCIAL IS WHAT THE WHOLE GAME IS ABOUT.

Having only 2 people that you can regularly contact on codec. It would've been nice to talk to drebin about guns, meryl about the pmcs, roy about general history and tactics and sunny to save. As for the temporary contacts, naomi would go more in depth about tech regarding the body like nanomachines, catch up on what's been happening or discuss what liquid ocelot has been up to. Raiden would talk about hunting, cqc and being angsty.

I was severely disappointed because one thing about mgs that I like is that there's tons of various trivia your teammates tell you. And that the conversations you have with them constantly are entertaining and make them feel human.

even an easter egg like knocking on the door would be nice

everything after act 2
>still better than mgs5
still salty after almost 2 years? lmao

You must have a pretty loose definition of salty.

Yeah, that's so weird. I too think the segment was fine first time. It became tedious after that. It just feels like there should be two possible scenarios. Like, just think about it: when you get inside, the first thing that happens anyway is a fight scene. So even if you went in during an alert phase, it wouldn't even be jarring to transition into that cutscene. It's weird to be tied to such an uninteresting rail for so long, when you know what's ahead.

It would also be funny as fuck to just navigate towards the door while Otacon continuously asks what the fuck you're doing but when you get closer he starts shouting about your godlike powers of orienteering.

I dunno, I really liked it

Finished it like four times, i still play it once every two years or so.

Everybody loved it and now that it's outdated by just a few years it somehow become popular to hate it. I guess you joined those people

It was my first MGS and loved everything about it.

Hating MGS is pretty much always been a bit popular. They are different games. Not sure if any other "mainstream big budget" game functions more as a theme/story/social commentary -level than as an actual video game. Indie games tend to do that. But of course these games all have solid gameplay too. It's natural there's so much hate because these games are not easy to understand.

A single story is not complex but the overarching saga is very complex and the themes are as complex as themes can be in any narrative form. MGS V is probably the one that deserves the most hate but it too is VERY strong on gameplay and themes. It has more problems with the story and with it's conclusion. But that "Moby Dick was first published without an ending epilogue" shit is probably the reason for that too. Hate or love, whatever. I still haven't found a better game series in any aspect of a game.

The writer who worked on 1-3 wasnt involved.

I think it just gets hate because of the 10/10 score it got on Gamespot

BORING CUTSCENES

fanboys from 2 that are pissed that 4 answered the questions that 2 asked and made Raiden not shit

Tried to get big boss hard medel and watch all flashbacks in cutscenes trophys at the same time. Was fucking pissed when I found out cutscenes count as in game time
