Which one is better, AoE 2 or 3?

SW Galactic Battlegrounds >= AoE2 > AoE Online > AoE1 > AoM > AoE 3

This list assumes all expansions being used and Expanding Fronts for SWGB being used.

And then you have the generally smaller maps and smaller scale in general.

They also basically abandoned AoE3, same as AoM, and just went back to forever milking AoE2 instead.
That "HD" version of AoM is completely broken till this day because they couldn't give a minimum of a fuck about it and the Chink faction is literally reskinned Greek models for units and buildings.

Oh and to add to this, the generally smaller maps made a lot of tactics less important or flat out useless, flank and pocket basically go into the trash.

There's only two gameplay modes, FFA or Team 1 vs Team 2.
You literally can't have more than 2 teams in AoE3.
Again this was simpliciation in order to get wider audience.

Terrain is half assed, there's no hills, a lot less map elements, less trees on screen due to the (back then) 3D engine not being able to handle too much shit on screen and so on.

There's no Relics and all your resources are generated in your town after upgrades so you don't even need to care about map control all that much so it goes into turtlefests if the game doesn't get finished before third age.

It came out in that time where "squad" units were popular so instead of training 1 unit at a time it produces like 5.

Castles/Towers are super weak and don't feel like they're all that worth the investment.

AoE3 has plenty of problems and the only way to make it even remotely enjoyable is to play it modded and even then AoE2 and SWGB are simply superior.
