Which one is better, AoE 2 or 3?

SW Galactic Battlegrounds >= AoE2 > AoE Online > AoE1 > AoM > AoE 3

This list assumes all expansions being used and Expanding Fronts for SWGB being used.

And then you have the generally smaller maps and smaller scale in general.

They also basically abandoned AoE3, same as AoM, and just went back to forever milking AoE2 instead.
That "HD" version of AoM is completely broken till this day because they couldn't give a minimum of a fuck about it and the Chink faction is literally reskinned Greek models for units and buildings.

Oh and to add to this, the generally smaller maps made a lot of tactics less important or flat out useless, flank and pocket basically go into the trash.

There's only two gameplay modes, FFA or Team 1 vs Team 2.
You literally can't have more than 2 teams in AoE3.
Again this was simpliciation in order to get wider audience.

Terrain is half assed, there's no hills, a lot less map elements, less trees on screen due to the (back then) 3D engine not being able to handle too much shit on screen and so on.

There's no Relics and all your resources are generated in your town after upgrades so you don't even need to care about map control all that much so it goes into turtlefests if the game doesn't get finished before third age.

It came out in that time where "squad" units were popular so instead of training 1 unit at a time it produces like 5.

Castles/Towers are super weak and don't feel like they're all that worth the investment.

AoE3 has plenty of problems and the only way to make it even remotely enjoyable is to play it modded and even then AoE2 and SWGB are simply superior.

And then of course you have the last factor, which is purely subjective unlike the objective flaws and simplifications I listed earlier.

Veterans don't like having their games changed too much and straying away from the formula.
AoE3 was like a very radical departure and as such it pissed off a ton of people.

This applies to basically any game series in existence as far as I'm concerned too. Heck, look at even CoD.
CoDfags fucking hated that Kevin Spacey one (Advanced Warfare or someshit) because it had too much futuristic shit, wall running, jetpacks and so on and it wasn't what they wanted in their CoD.

That's why games should never diverge too much from their "winning" formula. If it works then why the fuck would you try and "fix" it? Just give people what they want - more content and some minor mechanic adjustments. That's why AoE2 is still alive while AoE3 is dead outside of mods.

This is a bad example because those people are retards who only jumped on the franchise with modern warefare. CoD started as a WW2 shooter before moving into modern times. It then going into near future and then actual futuristc settings is totally in line with that.

The only real difference between CoD2/3 and CoD4 was the addition of grenade launcher noobtubes and killstreaks.

But for a lot of people MW was the first game so yeah.

I know a lot of WW2 CoDfags, me included, hated the MW ones.

Black Ops 3 had futuristic shit, wall running, jetpacks, and so on, and it was the best selling and fastest selling game in the series

The AoE3 online scene is poor too, gets like 1/6th the views of AoE2 and no real entertaining castors (just one guy who tries making jokes and memes all cast)
