I honestly don't know why they are releasing this before the 1.5+2.5 collection. I don't remember jack shit about the first two games nor did I play the sidegames so I wanted to wait until that released to get my head in the game for 2.8 but 2.8 releases BEFORE the collection.

2.8 and 2.5 are different games. 2.5 is 2FM, BBSFM, and Re:Coded. 2.8 is 3D:DDDFM, XBC, and 0.2:BBSAFP.

The KH2 remix is being released with the KH1 remix in 1 disc in march. This is some sidegame that bridges 2 and 3 or something.

There are three HD Collections.
1.5 (KH1 FM, Re Chain of Memories, and a movies on Days.
2.5 (KH2 FM, Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and a movie on ReCoded)
2.8 (Dream Drop Distance HD which has new content/changes, 0.2 which is a Ground Zeroes scenario for Kingdom Hearts 3 and is brand new, and a movie on the mobile game and will show new stuff).
In March later this year, they're combining 1.5 and 2.5 into one collection for PS4 (they were separate releases on PS4).
So basically to catch up on the whole series before KH3, you just need 1.5 & 2.5 Collection, and 2.8 and that's it.

Yeah all the games will be 60fps, well the playable ones at least and auto install on PS4 should fix the drive form load times. I don't know if they're worth it, they're only 40 so it's not too much, kinda weird that they cost 40 while 2.8 costs fullprice

you have to pay attention and up until now own 4 systems at a time to make sure that you're not going to miss out on that spinoff that is plot important because if you do miss it you won't understand the first 4 hours of a game

If you already played 2, you should already know about Chain of Memories but basically it introduces and setsup a lot of KH2 characters and plot points.
Days is a game that takes place during Roxas's time in the Organization and introduces Xion who is also part of the plot.
Birth by Sleep is basically KH0, and is a prequel set ten years before KH1.
Recoded is the most irrelevant (so far but the movie version of it in 2.5 added two new cutscenes that leave much to the imagination) but it basically serves to setup Dream Drop Distance.
Dream Drop Distance is basically the Peace Walker of the series. It sets up for KH3 pretty much and it's pretty significant.
0.2 is going to be Ground Zeroes for KH3. And the mobile game/movie serves as the catalyst for the whole series in general.

1 and 2 were the only ones big enough to warrant it, but back then season passes didn't exist. No Final Fantasy before XV had a season pass or story dlc, but that didn't stop them.

If it's anything like KH2FM, it will probably heavily change the battle system and ability order.
