not really. I played this game a couple years ago because v loved it and spoke so highly about it.
It's the definition of a 7/10. Not bad, but not great either. It really is super average but your average Sup Forumsirgin just latched onto it somehow.
Also, don't beat it four times, it's not worth it. I kept thinking I'd finally unlock a great ending but they're all lame and like 20 seconds long. Beat it once and watch the other ending on youtube.

Gameplay is nothing to write home about and there's plenty of grind if you're one of the dedicated (read autistic) completionists but the characters, story and music are awesome.
Even the fetch quests are good because devs actually bothered to add a lot for dialogues for your party that make the world feel alive.

This is completely wrong and misses the whole point of the 2nd play through.
Following ones don't really differ anymore besides the actual ending but if you don't do 2nd play through properly you fuck yourself out of great experience.

I love how idealistic the village feels in the first half of the game, despite it being an apocalyptic scenario.
The music, the lush colors. It's a solid juxtaposition to everyone fearing the encroaching extinction of humanity.

The fishing questline in Nier is a pretty good representation of the game as a whole.
The controls are poorly explained, and the directions are frustrating until you understand the tricks behind it, but even then they're not great.
But you get used to it and power through it for the good bits of dialogue and surprisingly emotional conclusion.
Most people's comments on the secondary characteristics (story, characters, OST) are correct, but just saying that the gameplay is bad is misleading.

Quite good, the dungeons are a lot of fun and nice to look at. The amount of backtracking is a bit of a bummer, though.

I had to watch it. The gameplay was arguably the worst i'd ever seen of the generation that wasn't WiiWare or PC indie at the time. It hurt to play it. Of course it didn't help that I fucked myself by playing on hard mode first, so i'll certainly admit its basically all my fault.
Still has fucking offensive gameplay. The story's kinda cool, I guess but the music is what you gotta get a hold of. Its fucking fantastic.

I youtube'd the whole game because I heard it plays like shit and I agree that it's a 6-7/10. Only outstanding part was the soundtrack, the text adventure bits were interesting as well. Kainé and Emile were memorable at least but dad Nier kinda sucked in comparison.

Right, I watched one with only a few sidequests and the 3rd and 4th playthroughs skipped (only the endings). Isn't the main story praised much more than the sidequests though?

Main story is good but the side quests paint the bigger picture. Not really the 'kill 5 boars and bring me the meat' parts but the part when you take someone's request and it ties to the story/world through the talk with your mates and the people around.
Sometimes you also have to do really questionable things like when you get asked to search for a shade in Nier's village.
