I think LotR did that a lot earlier and may be the greater inspiration for this specific thing. I mean the conflict in it is a bar brawl compared to the shit that happened in the 1st and 2nd ages.

I think a lot of artists want to make long stories but before they couldn't really do it. It was mostly only a hobby they spend a short time on so they just produced illustrations and stuff. But now there's patreon and some people do this shit full time which gives them the opportunity to do what they've always wanted.
