I don't know, what did you think of it?
It was ok. A masterful work of "lets explain little so people discuss it online for free marketing."
you want to fuck the goat boy
Nothing's confusing at all though except a few details about chara/the fallen child
It's been mostly discussed ad nauseum online because of the unique, weird meta narrative, unexpected stuff, literally infinite easter eggs, fun characters and ~Feelings~
Also if you're anything like me, OP, you really loved it
Shitty art with barebones gameplay (that only becomes challenging for 2 bosses in the game's grindathon mode)
Story is ok for a couple of playthroughs. Music is good too but suffers from sounding generic and abusing leitmotif.
...
It's charming honestly, people hate the community and that's the main problem. The OST is nice, and theres also metal and jazz covers of most songs.
I have a tradition that when I take a bus into NYC early in the morning, as mist is still along the marshland bridge on my way, to listen to the jazz Live at Grillby's album. Feels good, man
You thought it was pretty good
Nice thumbnail jpeg of the back of some anime characters' heads
What are you trying to tell me?
Live at Grillby's is the best remix album by far, and I didn't even think I cared about jazz
>people hate the community
In other words, they found out tumblr likes it so now they pretend to hate it on principle.
It was pretty meh. Only thing I really liked about it was the Genocide route.
1) art definitely is pretty bad for the most part but to be fair the creator strongly wanted a 'modest' style on purpose, even refusing to use some improved art his friend supplied or ever update the terrible player sprite to keep with that theme, and overall the battle graphics at least work well enough, sometimes even almost impressive for the style
2) most the game's a fair, pretty well-done difficulty curve. the 2 "superbosses" are the only real challenge for HARDCORE GAYMERS but if you're playing undertale for gaming challenge rather than story / atmosphere you're doing it wrong
3) even so much as implying it "has a grindathon mode" rather than genocide being a totally optional thing you're heavily, heavily pushed to not even do at all shows you're missing the point
4) story is totally subjective but it's the game's very strongest suit IMO, and any game's fucking story will get old after multiple playthroughs lmfao
5) calling the wildly varied, excellent soundtrack 'generic' is the single part of this post that fucked with me the most. Even if you hate everything about undertale you can't deny the soundtrack is the shit and is anything but generic once you're past the first 1/3rd or so of the game especially. And leave it to Sup Forums to define "skillful, deftly-crafted leitmotif which is objectively one of the best aspects of the soundtrack" as "abuse"
like okay, i'll give you that the graphics aren't gonna impress anyone and the difficulty could have been a little more gripping for experienced players (hard mode should've been finished) but a lot of these points are ridiculous
I liked it.
I liked the bonds you make with the characters
I liked the music, the gameplay and graphics are serviceable but do the job.
8/10
It's 'fanbase' or the tumblr users who watched their fave e-celeb play it is what's really making it hard to have any discussion about it though, the well is unfortunately tainted.
11-year-old hyper-edgelord that probably wept like a babe at true pacifist but is painfully ashamed of admitting it detected :^)
How could I weep at that cringefest. The fight with Asgore at the end was infinitely more emotional than that schlock.
Undertale is proof that the community doesn't know what it wants and will always follow trends.
Seeing as it's not going to get any kind of continuations, updates, sequels, spin-offs or anything, that well should run dry in time. I feel like the "bad fandom"'s presence is like half of what it was a year ago, and in due time this'll sink into the state of being a comfy Earthbound-like rpg that you either "get" and love or "don't get" and have no interest in, like it was always meant to be.
Also the growing international community is adorable and almost completely chill and constantly spouts very high-quality fan-content, so there's that.
Hey listen bud, that's great, but I'm asking for what I thought of it.
You wanna fuck a goat child
he's using words like "cringe" and "schlock", he uses Sup Forums and watches redlettermedia watch out guys!
You want to fuck the murder child.
I wanna fuck em all
well except the meme skeletons and the goat dad.
Alright user be like that all you want. The Genocide run was the only thing that really stood out in Undertale, having the best narrative, character developments, and best perspective on the meta-themes of the game. It also just so happened to have the only challenging fights in the game. Call me edgy all you want but I will stand by that stance.
If you enjoyed yourself, it was terrible.
If you didn't enjoy yourself it obviously was still terrible.
But Toriel is neither a boy or a child!
Enjoying Genocide isn't bad, but Genocide loses a lot of value without the other routes.
So I have Undertale sitting on my computer and have never touched it because I hear it ended up being super SJW-y, really Tumblrish, and no "gameplay" to speak of.
Is that true? I'm far overdue for playing it.
>literally infinite easter eggs
what did he mean by "literally"?
It loses its impact yes, but it's narrative remains unchanged albeit less powerful, but the game was made with multiple playthroughs in mind. I'd also like to note that this is also the only playthrough that has meaning even by not playing it.
The only really Tumblr thing is Alphys and Undyne, and even then it's not that annoying. It does have gameplay that isn't to bad, but don't expect anything hard besides 2 bosses.
And it's pretty short too so you don't really lose all that much if you don't like it.
it's entertaining.
gameplay is not its strong suit, but i enjoyed some of the fights.
the good ost goes a really long way in this game.
as for sjw stuff, yes there's gay people but none of the characters start hailing them as the new messiahs and it serves a purpose to get to a new area
tumblr is the problem, toby fox doesn't actually give a shit about sjw's.
it's really the game's third and final act more than an alternative route
the "SJW content" is mostly Sup Forums and /fit/ jokes, i think the dev was surprised by the reaction
It's good. My advice is to play it with as little knowledge as possible, don't look anything up until after you're completely done with it and play how YOU want, making the decisions YOU want rather than what you hear is best, and let the game do its thing. And if you're really worrying about the tumblry stuff, I mean, I don't love that kind of stuff being shoved in my face and I was never bothered playing Undertale. I'll detail it below as un-spoilery as possible, though.
It's only SJW-y in that it has a couple 'they/them' characters (one is your player character and meant to be Literally Whatever You Prefer, the other is a physically sexless ghost), two sets of characters (one set being tertiary-tier relevance) displaying same-sex romantic feelings, and the game nudging you toward playing mercifully and not killing your enemies, though you're more than free to do so anyway and in fact there's plenty of interesting things to see if you do so, whether fully or partially.
There are lots of hidden things and more seem to be found once in awhile even now. The "literally" meme needs to die, though.
>i think the dev was surprised by the reaction
toby knew exactly what he was getting into, he learned music by doing the tracks for that homestuck comic.
also there's this tweet where i get the feeling toby knew exactly what would happen.
I like to think he was referring to /vg/
he's probably visited.
but even the worst /vg/ thread isn't as bad as what the tumblrinas do.
Its fun and charming 8/10.
Sup Forums overreacted WAY too much at the gay characters.
I played it before the shitstorm and I found it to be the looney-tunes kind of gay. The interactions were humorous and not a GAY ACCEPTANCE kind of way.
I think a problem is that after Sup Forums went beserk people went overly critical about it and needed to appeal to the middle ground and keep saying its a 6/10.
>he thinks that some boring grindfest with a shitty, half-baked edgy teen creepypasta ending that doesn't even remotely fit in with the rest of the game story-wise or quality-wise whatsoever should be considered the final act rather than the expertly-crafted and immensely satisfying true pacifist ending
Yes, geno has its moments and the 2 fights are great, but on the whole it's kind of a joke if you ask me. Neutral -> TP, especially with some kills in your first neutral run and seeing powerful scenes like Undyne's neutral death then experiencing a 'normal reset' run once for your pacifist run, is the perfect way to experience the game if you ask me. Then just watch the genocide differences youtube video, get wrecked by flowey, and download saves at Undying / Sans if you really want to experience them yourself.
As much as I loathe the social justice community and the amount of games that pander to it, I can't for the life of me understand how people came to the conclusion that Undertale is SJW.
It mentions subjects that SJWs talk about a lot, yes, but it's actually handled well and makes sense in the context of the game. Its worst crime is acknowledging that gay people exist. It really doesn't go into any more depth than that, and it's only on-screen for a minute tops.
The extent to which the whole thing was warped and blown out of proportion is baffling.
then there's the even older tweet from before UT was released where he was like "You should play Undertale soon after release, before people start hating it on principle". It's obvious he really knows how the internet works and what would've happened roughly, and forethought for stuff like hiding So Sorry after its creator insisted on using it rather than an original character. I think he really deftly handled the "sjw" elements though, and he himself doesn't seem to be that way at all, just wanted to be... "open" I guess.
The /vg/ thread can be gross now and then but honestly in my fairly hefty experience there it's actually very chill, comfy and not bad at all, though to be fair most of that experience was more late '15 / early '16. It's the youtube and most of the tumblr communities for the game where you have the popular let's player fan-kiddies and SJW weirdos who make the community seem bad, but there's plenty of good in it, too.
regardless of what you think of it, it's clearly the game's conclusion and ties everything together
haha oh wow, that guy fucked up
This makes me think that you misinterpteted the entire Genocide route. It's meant to be the ultimate form of showing player interaction with the game, and the full extent of his ability to save, his determination (Of compleleting a game) and the reactions one would have of a murderer.
> boring grindfest
This was meant to show the effort of going out of ones way to kill. You aren't supposed to enjoy it because mindless killing isn't fun in real life.
>half-baked edgy teen creepypasta ending
Chara is meant to be his own character. You the player are a separate entity from him. By enacting out this plan, you facilitate his ultimate plan, wiping out the world.
>fit in with the rest of the game story-wise or quality-wise
Like I said, it before, it encaptures the best within all of the characters. It is probably the best route for humanizing them as it has the least amount of jokes affecting the characters.
>whatsoever should be considered the final act
It's the final act for the player. The fact that you think True Pacisfict was satisfying is good, because thats the way it should have ended, bu t the player just has to see what would happen if you kill them all.
>Then just watch the genocide differences youtube video
Narratively this also actually fits in, as people are reprimanded by Flowey for being sickos for just watching the run.
Sup Forums loved it at first, then a week or two after launch it suddenly became apparent that it was getting pretty popular and critically-acclaimed, so they had to quickly and nervously throw together some logical-seeming excuse to hate it.
Yeah, if you know nothing about it it might seem like some quirky indie hipster game full of furries and gays and forces you to be friends with the monsters instead of fighting them, but if you actually play it you quickly see it's so much more than that and even those elements are much more well-handled than you might've assumed.
he used it in the youtube.com
You mean this tweet?
It's fucking uncanny how on-point it was
Fucking amazing.
