crosshairs are only acceptable in games where you hold angles where a dot might feasibly cover someheads head i.e. counterstrike

I like the default crosshairs for the characters. The devs made them so they're what the characters were meant to be played with

For some characters you should probably start with crosshair if only so that you know what their spread is like.

Depends on who you play. For Mcree, if you're going for headshots dot is better, but I mainly play Pharah so small crosshair is a better fit
