Why are old school WRPGs so clunky and obtuse?
Why are old school WRPGs so clunky and obtuse?
That's just how things were back then, like your mom's big fat ass.
because you are an Xbot
My mom's ass isn't obtuse, people seem to be easily finding their way in all the time.
cause they're old? what kind of retarded question is this?
because they were trying to translate board game mechanics into videogames
no other genre aged as shitty though
Because gaming was still trying new things and they didn't have a lot to base their games around.
Because they're old, you dumbass.
fallout 1 came out in 1997 and plays like shit
final fantasy 7 came out the same year and plays fine
were western devs just retarded?
In fairness, I'd rather replay Fallout than FF7 any day. In Fallout, I can make different choices and do different things.
FF7 just railroads you down a path full of random encounters and questionable writing plus a lot of cinematics.
Good point actually. Fallout 1's inventory system is awful.
Lots of complex things going on, and they didn't have good ideas on controls or how to present the game properly. It was cool at the time because it was new, and had a lot of depth and lore and whatnot, but most games of that type didn't age well.
Because games weren't mainstream so they didn't try to appeal to casuals, they took inspiration from tabletop RPGS, and you need to man up and deal with it you fucking faggot.
Underrail has spoiled me so bad that I'll never be able to go back to early WRPGs.
This user is correct. They were originally going to use GURPS which is based off old tabletop RPGs, but then made their own SPECIAL system instead.
Also OP is a faggot.
how does fallout 1 play like shit exactly? i'm currently playing it for the first time and it's fine.
>obtuse
because it's in isometric view, and you mean acute, as is less than 90 degrees faglord
it's fine, it just doesn't explain shit so these anons can't figure out how to do anything
Is this another JRPG bait thread?
Fo1 was the best of the franchise and gradual dissolvement of the perfectly fine classical system has resulted in disgusting pseudo rpg abominations like fo4 and Skyrim
I fucking hate Arcanum. I dont understand why people like this game. Combat is SO fucking garbage, the story is dull and it feels like a broken, unfinished mess.
I just wanted to play a half-ogre gentleman who weilded a shotgun and fought his peoples rights. Instead guns are worthless and the civil rights method means being a nutjob revolutionary.
Look, I'm not going to argue about the story because I haven't gotten that far, but come on.
You seriously don't think the interface and the general moving and interacting with objects are shit?
This game has not aged well, take off your nostalgia goggles for a sec.
what's even bad about it, you click shit and shit happens, what did you not like about it, because everything works fine for me
I'm trying to get into cRPGs, what are some good ones to help me start off?
Inventory is a bit clunky but it's not too clunky of a game all around. It plays perfectly fine and the gameplay mechanics are straight foward enough that you can easily figure things out on your own.
What exactly did you have trouble understanding?
>t. never played the original wasteland
Don't know how this flew under the radar but fucking kek
>point at a square
>click on it
>watch your guy walk to that space
It might not be enjoyable for you, but I don't see how that has anything to do with it's age. There are still modern games that use this formula.
Guns can be good if you build carefully enough. Tech is worse than magic, but still decent. Half-ogres aren't exactly ideal for it, though.
The game is blatantly unfinished, I'll agree with you there. I still like it, but it's flawed.
i don't have nostalgia goggles as i'm playing it for the first time ever. the only thing i dislike is how, when you open the inventory, you don't see all the items at the same time and you need to scroll down. it's super slow when you click on the arrows in the inventory, i've found that it goes pretty fast while holding the down arrow key on the keyboard. other than that i don't have any complaints. the combat hasn't age because it's turn based. ian is a retard though, because he opts to use a knife over a gun, but when i removed knives from him he stopped using them.
The only thing I find really clunky is opening doors/searching containers with a weapon equipped.
WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE PULL OUT AND HOLSTER WEAPON ANIMATION EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU INTERACT WITH SOMETHING WHAT THE FUCK WAS WRONG WITH THESE DEVS YES I MAD
It has its problems here and there, like clunky inventory, needing to barter with your companions, or the pace of combat slowing to a crawl when there's a lot of characters involved, etc.
I was just playing this 5 seconds ago. OP you're full of shit RE 1 is clunky this game is point and click with simple as fuck menus.
oh, and removing items from bags that are in your inventory. because you need to put them in your used item slot etc., etc. that's shitty.
there is a bug(?) where you can steal from your companion and he never notices it. don't barter just steal, they can carry a shit ton of items.
also, you can make the combat faster, it's in game preferences, there is a slider, but i reset every time you start a game.
it resets*
>there is a bug(?) where you can steal from your companion
And the fact that that's necessary at all is a problem.
>you can make the combat faster
I'm fully aware. It doesn't fix the fundamental issue of combat scaling poorly.
>The only thing I find really clunky is opening doors/searching containers with a weapon equipped.
yea that's horrible, but i'm currently playing a melee/unarmed character so it's not that bad because i have have spiked knuckles in my active item slot. he doesn't do the animation when you have that equipped.
Most people who say this only played a few hours of it, Fallout is one of the easiest crpg to get into.
best answer, from the 80s to the late 90s most WRPGs were trying to spice up table top game mechanics while keeping the mechanics.
>walk or fly wherever the fuck you want
>spam attack button
>occasionally use healing spell or wizard's eye/levitation
wow so obtuse
It has taken me 16 years to realise the game is a bit over rated but you know what? Fuck you the music is based.
>tfw the best Western style RPG was created in Japan
Don't blame the game for your learning disability.
>not getting an elephant gun
>not getting it upgraded to a GUN THAT SHOOTS SWORDS
Found your problem
And Arcanum's appeal is really mostly the setting and the amount of chargen options you get
git gud
Old games made sure they had content first and then polished what they could.
New ones don't bother with value and make 3d minecraft.
>take a slow gun that requires five levels of STR investment and eats 6 bullets for every shot, and upgrade it into a larger, slower gun that requires more STR investment and eats 12 bullets for every shot
>damage doesn't scale with resource investment
The only two firearms in the game that should even be considered for regular use are the hand cannon and the sniper rifle, and mainly because both can be stolen instead of wasting 15+ levelups just to be able to craft them.
Tesla gun is also awesome, but only if you know exactly what you are doing, because wielding it effectively and keeping it supplied with ammo requires some serious planning.
Yeah, Fallout 1 and 2 were the first CRPGs I beat, they were very straight forward. I only had some issues with the menu (like needing to click lockpick in your skills list first, then clicking on a locked door) but beyond that the game was very easy to understand and a fuckin ton of fun. I loved how 2 starts you off so weak and ends you as a destroyer of worlds totting power armor and a posse.
That dude is just retarded, at least half of Sup Forums is. There was a giant Deus Ex thread like years ago that had most people shitting on the game because it was their first time playing it. It was just on a major steam sale and large swathes of Sup Forums just couldn't wrap their head around a semi older game.
Fallout, Baldur's Gate.
BG is not a particularly good crpg for a beginner imo. Fallout is much more straight forward just because you don't need to be familiar with d&d mechanics like class restrictions, roll-based stats (instead of percentages), thac0, saving throws etc. The only weak part in fallout is, as you said, the menus.
They were not tho? I played Fallout 1 and 2 recently and had no problem at all.
