there are also some people who thought that meant you needed to attack it in order to stop it from lasering, but those people are stupid because it says counter attack, no shit it's only going to do it if you hit it

Not really. Japanese says 'if you attack while its tail is up', and people playing in Japanese will do the same mistake 99% of the time.

That being said the translation for FF7 is absolutely atrocious, and I'm not talking about grammatical errors, I'm talking about meaning lost or turned upside down.

Anybody else play with the re-translation patch? It's refreshing, makes the more vague plot elements easier to understand. As well as basic dialogue. Here's an example:

I've been playing the Japanese version for language practice and yeah, it's only after you have something to compare it to that you understand just how messed up the original translation is. Everyone knows the big typos and whatnot but they're pretty much just the tip of the iceberg.

I will give them that it's not a dry translation though, even if the quality is bad it does have certain kind of character.

Cloud never gets "molested", it's a weird misconception that keeps floating around. He complains about the heat, the problem is that they translated 苦しいな as "It hurts" which is the wrong translation choice in that context.

The line you get for selecting that option is 「暑苦しいだけだ……」 (they went with “Too stuffy in here…” which is alright) and 暑苦しい literally means "uncomfortably warm", "sweltering heat", etc.
