How about setting up a new villain, something new to protect, and different stakes? Other games have done that, SML2 did it really well actually.

Point being? Characters, their goals, how those characters interact, and the setting dictate the direction of simplistic video games like Mario. the story is original, Bowser may be trying to marry peach again but he's doing it in a original way and we'll probably be introduce to interesting characters and locations. Every major Mario game has always boiled down to "save the Princess" why would you expect this one to be any different?
