The gaming industry can't afford to focus on "the long run". Game studios these days are shutting down left and right.
I wasn't joking about there being very little job-security in the industry.
The best you can hope for as a game dev is 2-3 years employment and then MAYBE being put on a new project. And that's a big maybe.
I kinda' get why the developers would chose exclusivity. When your game has just come out and you may not have a job in a few months, you'd better hedge your bets!
The problem is that the gaming industry is structured this way.
What's interesting is that video games' older cousin, software development, is practically the exact same industry with very different structure.
