It will never happen, and Valve would be stupid to try. Right now there is no reason any of their competition could ever seriously take over the market, but as soon as one becomes subscription and one is free, Steam is dead.
The closest thing you'll ever get is what we already have in things like Humble Monthly and Origin Access.
