There is no definitive period, the period which you grew up in as a child is the "best", because your memories are heavily weighted by nostalgia.
Given that most anons are in their late teens/early twenties, I'm going to say that period is the early to mid-2000's due to the above point.
late 90s - early 00s
the period when I switched from consoles to pc
No time like the present. I say now. I can emulate everything.
no you can't
I have heavy nostalgia.. I shouldn't though because I'm only 26 years old
idk, I think there's a legitimately good argument to made for this period. the medium was starting to achieve maturity, but was not yet fettered by the limits of big business and stagnation that it is now.
These days you only find innovation in tiny pixel-art games, back then almost every publisher was financing some pretty radical game concepts.
10/10
>Genesis emulation
>SNES emulation
>GBA emulation
>Wii Emulation
>gamecube emulation
Broken tier:
Dreamcast, N64 and PS2 emulation
Would have to agree. Can anyone name any groundbreaking game mechanics that have actually made an impact on a franchise or the industry in the last 10 years?
And by that, I mean software, not hardware.
I would not call PS2 emulation broken.
It is. The PS3 remaster is much better
1995-2005
Super Metroid + this
You are simplifying this quite a bit. Back then AAA-gaming was able to take more risks, because making a game didn't take 20-80 million to make like they do today. The 1995-2005 spawned like every revolutionary franchise that you're still playing today, only with a 5 or 6 behind the title. That era was the start of Sony getting into the console business and you could really tell that they wanted to make a lasting impression, because the PS1 and PS2 have some of the best libraries of all time. It was also the last time that Nintendo gave a shit about making games instead of selling toys.
There are only 3 good games in this pic, so no
Yeah, this. perfect mix between advanced enough technology to accomplish great things but low enough budgets that developers could afford to experiment.
Why can't people make games with 2005 graphics? that would cost a lot less and what matters is the gameplay with improved tools, etc.
Have you heard of minecraft?
minecraft is "muh oldschool retro game" I'm talking about 2005 graphics like DMC 3 and Burnout you idiot
They do make those. Except they aren't FPS games anymore but RTS/top down games. Or indie shit that still won't run on toasters because the the code usually is a 10 monkeys with 4 typewriters and the deadline is tommorow scenario

I agree with 1995-2005 being the best in terms of technological jump and the amount of experimental games, but 2004-2009 got us some great examples of technology and hardware advances done right. I also don't mind the now somewhat standardized basic control schemes in FPS/TPS and racing games across all platforms, allows for better accessibility. No more shit like N64 controllers or fucking 10 movement keys instead of modifiers like fucking Thief..
Because they wouldn't sell. Only way to fund them would be Kickstarter.
Depends on how you define best, and it is relative to the generation of gamers at that time. If we're being very serious, Golden Age, i.e. Space Wars, brought about electronic gaming, so maybe those.
Personally, as in favorites though? 1998 exclusively. No year has come before or since with such a magnificent line-up of games, and I would build a time-machine just to bring those fucking wildmen of developers to modern era if I could.
This nig knows what's up. 1998 a best.
One thing I don't understand. Games like RE5 or RE6 don't sell well but any shit MMO does
It's cliched, but it's hard to deny that 1998 was the best year in gaming. Half-Life and Ocarina of Time alone would make it my favourite year ever, but there were soooo many more amazing games. Not just childhood games, there are games like Baldur's Gate or Thief that I havent played until a few years ago and absolutely loved.
Re5 is literally the best selling capcom game of all time, dude.
6.5 million is very low considering it released on ps3, xbox 360 and windows
I'd say its very high for being such a shit game.
>tips, fedora
Here is your (you)
I'm sorry for hurting your feelings.
Sometimes cliches are right for a reason, and this is one of those instances where it is. The year had something for EVERYONE, no matter what bullshit you liked or whether you shat your diapers or not. Everyone had 'that' game from '98 if they were alive and sentient.
Doesn't give you any hipster cred though, which is the currency on which this site runs.
>No Morrowind in OP's pic.
Aaaaaand dropped.
Good thing I haven't cared about popularity or 'cred' on Sup Forums since I was coming here as a minor over a decade ago.
