Valve makes massive amount of money on there F2P games like DOTA2/TF2.

They would die overnight, especially DOTA2 which has a lot of BR/Russian players.

Valve has some sort of contingency plan in place that would allow any game that needs steam to launch to launch without it.

In CS:GO/TF2 (Never played DOTA2 so don't know how its drops work) you have to pay $2.50 to buy a key from valve to open a crate. They also get a cut of every sale on the steam market. You lock that behind a paywall the playerbase tanks overnight, people stop buying keys, people stop selling on the market. It would be a blunder of unprecedented proportions if they killed the kind of cash they make off micro-transactions.

People also seem to forget Microsoft already tried it with GFWL. It completely failed and was made free. Look at the windows store it provided the same services and even uses the same servers as the xbox one but its free on PC. Microsoft knows PC players won't pay to play online. Even EA isn't trying that shit, their optional paid service on Origin gives you access to a big library of their games.

If Valve or any of the other platforms introduced a paid online service I would immediately stop using it and go somewhere else.

I haven't bought a thing from the recent Steam sales (or anything in general on their store). I'll give it another 2-3 years before some of my wishlist games are in that 75% off zone.
