Big world to immerse yourself in that will hopefully have interesting, self-contained areas within (dungeons).

Likable characters

Climbing mechanic opens up a lot of possibilities for secrets.

Combat's the best it's ever looked in the series.

Art style is a nice middle ground between the pastel vomit that was SS and the realism of other titles.

>>Likable characters

Zelda doesnt have characters. None of them have a shred of personality

Just admit you're a nintenyearold who can't let go of the 90s when you grew up

>Doesn't have characters
>BOTW thread

you can play as link

Nothing much, just these:

>tamable horses
>tamable dogs
>friendly NPCs with AI to fight enemies
>MonolithSoft (Xenoblade, Xenobalde X) helped on development for the world (so you know it'll be littered with secrets and an insane amount of hand-crafted detail)
>enemy AI that's actually good (e.g., lighting up their wooden clubs with a fire Link created; throwing nearby barrels at the player; avoiding bombs when they spot them; etc.)
>4 colossal sheikah mech beasts to slay, each with a dungeon inside
>120 shrines with a unique mechanic each, some of them pretty dang large as well
>decent physics engine that can simulate various effects
>mechanics that actually work together within the world (for example, if you want to make a fire, instead of opening a menu to "craft fire"; Link chops down any tree, cuts it into wood pieces, carries the bark in his hand, drops it anywhere on the ground, drops flint on top of the wood, strikes it with any metal melee weapon - boom, fire)
>actual challenge for the first time since LoZ 2 - guardians alone deal a whopping 6 hears of damage
>dynamic weather, temparature, and wind that influences the world as a whole and what equipment the player needs (e.g. if Link gets too cold, you'll need to eat food that warms you or wear thicker clothing)
>sick slow-mo effect then drawing your bow and arrow whilst falling
>fire creates and updraft for your glider
>elemental arrows (so far, we've seen Fire, Bomb, Ice, Lightning, and Sheikah(?) - although we do not know what the last 2 do)
>can climb quite-literally anything in the world - trees, buildings, mountains, even large enemies can be climbed (such as the Steppe Talus rock monster in the Great Plateau)
>no bullshit 2-hour long tutorial anymore, just straight into the game

all this and we still haven't seen gameplay within towns, nor any of the dungeons (aside from a tiny teaser of presumably a sheikah mech dungeon, possibly another dungeon that was set in Death Mountain as well).

Returning to what Zelda 1 did. If it actually does that.

it's blatantly doing that. Even in E3 2016 they had a segment dedicated to its connection with the original LoZ

Aonouma has flat out said he's trying to imitate Zelda 1. But he's said things like that before the release of every Zelda game. And then those things don't pan out.

I've been waiting for a new game like Zelda 1 for basically 29 years. But my anticipation may hurt my enjoyment of this game.

>But he's said things like that before the release of every Zelda game
no he hasn't?

Zelda is a surprisingly therapeutic series in that it's very fun to go around looking for secrets and completing complex dungeons.

It's a 3D Zelda that plays like the original 2D Zelda, with a couple of modern design at the top.

After Skyward Sword, this game looks amazing.

It's Zelda

yes it does, it had awesome and memorable characters at that

Full 24 hour day/night cycle - 1 minute is 1 hour in-game
Real-time weather, featuring varying levels of rain including thunderstorms, snow [and possibly sandstorms in the desert]• Link can purchase as well as find new articles of clothing to wear; which can be mixed and matched to your liking
100+ Shrines [mini-dungeons] to explore The Amazon guidebook description says that there are 120 of them
Link can pick up and use enemy weapons, as well as gather them to sell at shops and merchants
Nintendo EPD has built a new, custom in-house physics engine specifically for this game. It allows for realistic properties of different materials such as durability, weight, motion and reaction to wind and force
Fire propagation technology has been added to the physics engine, governing the spreading of flames as well as materials that are flammable• Link can ride on his shield like a snowboard and ski down hills and slopes. Depending on the surface, he may have to leap over it and paraglide across as friction is a factor over things like stones, brick and rough objects
Link can cook and prepare meals to add not only more hearts to the health meter, but also to give him stat-boosts to things like cold resistance, or to increase stamina for climbing. The ingredients can be combined to make custom dishes; but if you make something disgusting ["Dubious Food"], Link won't eat it
Link can not only ride horses in Breath of the Wild - he can also find wild horses and tame them! Tamed horses can be stored at Stables scattered throughout the game world
You can advance time by sleeping at campfires or resting at inns
There will be several mini-games to find and enjoying the game one of which revealed recently is a mini-golf game Link can play using a special "Stasis Rune"...

He claimed Wind Waker was a free roaming world as well. He also greatly exaggerated the 'exploration' of Twilight Princess. Especially focusing so much on Epona being this amazing gameplay mechanic...when you can only use Epona in two zones.

My point is, Aonouma is not a reliable source to listen to before playing the game yourself. Because hey, he's trying to build hype for his game. He's bias.

When you board a tamed horse at a stable, the stable will provide a saddle and bridle for it. There is no known information about whether or not you can customize these items
Link can collect Korok Seeds from the many Koroks hiding around Hyrule. It is unknown what these will do. According to Amazon's guidebook description - there are 900 of them!
There are many side quests to complete in the game According to the Amazon guidebook description, there are 76 of them
There are many types of bombs, one of which is the remote bomb that comes in 2 known types - square/stationary and round which can be thrown or rolled. Physics will apply to the round bomb if it's placed on a hill, as it will roll down due to gravity
Weapons and items have durability and will break after repeated use or duress
Rupees are rare in the world and can only be bartered for or acquired by selling items in towns and from merchants. You can no longer find them by cutting grass or breaking objects
Eating food and drinking potions are the only known ways to replenish your health - although fairy fountains will possibly return as well
Enemies are very resourceful - if you disarm them, they will grab the nearest weapon available to attack you. Certain Bokoblins will even grab and throw rocks from the ground at you when disarmed
Different enemies come out at different times during the day/night cycle
The weather plays a large role in determining some of the abilities Link can perform. For example, Fire Arrows will not work unless being lit and shot from under an overhang, or from under a tree and mountainsides/cliffs/slopes are more slippery and thus harder to climb, due to being wet
There will be an alternate ending based on progression and choices made during the game
In an interview, Eiji Aonuma said that Epona will be in the game
Link can use the sword and bow while riding a horse and also while shield-surfing
Link will stub his toe if trying to kick a chest while barefoot

Nostalgia.

That's it and nothing else.

Treasure chests can be opened - but shabby wooden ones can be broken or lit on fire to get at their contents
Jumping/diving into freezing water will rapidly deplete Link's health
There are insects hiding in the grass that can be used to make elixirs
There are many forms of transportation in the game. Other than the horse and other animal mounts, Link can fast-travel and also use a raft to cross bodies of water
The Korok Leaf can be used to create a gust of wind to propel the raft and blow-back enemies and objects
Link has a stamina meter that depletes as he exerts himself by running or climbing. This can be upgraded throughout the course of the game
Link can climb most any surface - except for the smooth walls and some ledges of the Shrines
Cooking food by throwing it on an open fire produces different food than if you cook it in a pot over open flame
While falling, Link can reach out and grab surfaces to stop the drop
Clouds cast shadows on the game world
Link can hold up to 5 ingredients in his arms at once to concoct a recipe in a pot
Certain plants can season food for additional stat-boosts
Insect Parts can be combined with monster parts to create special elixirs
Certain foods will grant additional yellow hearts to the health meter which serve as extra health
When animals run by enemies, they'll get distracted and chase after them
During the game's day/night cycle, people in tbe world have schedules and certain people and certain enemies will go to sleep
Link can use Stalfos' severed arms as a weapon
If a Bokoblin's friend is killed and drops a weapon that's better than the one it has already; he will hurry to pick it up
Any weapon an enemy carries can be looted
Main weapons, sub-weapons and shield types are all displayed on Link's character model - as well as the straps holding them and his Sheikah Slate
Enemies will sometimes light their weapons on fire during battle

holy shillony!

>Zelda doesnt have characters. None of them have a shred of personality
They are one dimensional. But they clearly have a personality. A Tsundere fish girl is still a Tsundere. A genki farm girl is still genki. These are personality types.

it kind of was, but that's not the same as claiming it would be like LoZ really. TP was clearly based on OoT, not LoZ 1.

Link can parry attacks using "Perfect Guard" by pressing the "A" button at the precise moment of impact from an attack
While on a mount, Link can jump off and time will slow down, allowing him to pull out his bow and arrow for precise shots
There are many secrets, unlockables and Easter Eggs in the game
The soundtrack is orchestrated and is composed by Manaka Kataoka. She is known for her soundtracks to "The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks", "Super Smash Bros. Wii U", "Animal Crossing: New Leaf", "Animal Crossing: City Folk" and "Wii Fit"
Every weapon can be thrown
Link can craft/improve items and weapons
•Heavy rainfall can put out campfires and wildfires
During a thunderstorm, lightning can randomly strike around the environment including hitting objects, enemies and even Link! Wearing metallic armor raises the risk of being struck by lightning for both you and your enemies
Using "Magnesis", Link can grab a metal treasure chest from across the room and bring it to his current position
Large mini-bosses can be found roaming around the game world and they are unique, having their own name and health bar
Link can place up to five markers on the map for navigation
The Sheikah Slate can be used as a viewfinder to scout around the game world, as well as scanning enemies to see thier total health
The game will feature traditional dungeons; however the exact number of them is not known
Certain items only have uses in the overworld by striking or affecting them and cannot be used from a menu, like The Chu-Chu jelly drops
Horses are the only mounts so far that have stats. They are: Stamina, Strength, Speed, Temperament and Bond. You can feed them and soothe them to increase your bond and it's also been noticed that you can feed other animals like dogs in towns and they will then follow you. It is currently unknown if we can take them into battle and fight with them by Link's side
Enemies also have mounts

>ask what the appeal is
>get appeal
>"S-stop shilling!"
OP confirmed Sonygger

Zelda skin in a bad open world game.

>He claimed Wind Waker was a free roaming world as well.
... It is. How is it not?

Name any game at all where random NPCs have more character than they do in Zelda. I'll wait.

How big is the map?

Both it and TP completely lock you out of exploring the world until you make x amount of progress in the main quest and force you through the plot in a strict order.

The Wii U version better be good. All these washed out screenshots seem to just be a problem with capture cards because we've seen off screen gameplay that looks fine. I refuse to but a Switch until they've shown me it isn't gonna end up like the Wii U.

For the first 1/3 the game, you are told where to go and can't even explore. After you finally get the freedom to explore, its 40 tiles with one thing on each tile. And a lot of those tiles you can't do anything on until you trigger a story event.

Its a pretty linear game with an open overworld. But open world != free roaming. Aonouma himself in a recent interview, saying he wanted Wind Waker to be totally free roaming, but they didn't have the technology back then. And that's why he's making BotW totally free roaming now.

>shitting out 4 copypaste tier posts
>not shilling
Do they pay you in nintendollars?

Remember that with Twilight Princess, the GC version actually turned out the best. The same might happen on Wii U, since its been planned and designed on the Wii U for most of its development cycle.

Who cares? The game is fucking shit anyway.

>the GC version actually turned out the best.
Was that just because of the controls or were the graphics and framerate better?

Some textures were better and less grey bloom shit. But also the traditional controls were a big part of it.

wii version of TP was worse for a lot of reasons which doesn't seem to be the case for botw

using the wiimote for ranged weapons was actually pretty satisfying. waggle 2 swing was pretty pointless though since there was no control.

>Whats the appeal?
First, the game is very well crafted and has some serious atention to detail. Like, grass, flowers and clouds move with the wind. The weather is dinamic, and when it rains puddles form in the ground. When you are walking in the snow you start to "sink" get slower (but there are snow boots that solve that). The chest opening animation is different depending on your positioning in relation to it. During storms you might be hit by lighting (both natural lighting and enemy lighting attacks are atracted to metal btw). Fire is very well done, too. It spreads with the wind, and can create updrafts you can use to gain height with your glider. Being on fire (or weilding a torch) helps keeping you warm in the cold. Put enemies on fire and they will visibly agonize in pain.

The game also tries to make everything as interactible as possible. A good example is the broken bridge before the raft. It isn't a puzzle in the traditional sense. The physics based nature of the game allows you to solve it in many ways. There was a guy who just dropped a bunch of logs on the river and waited the current to take then to the bridge's remains like a makeshift bridge. Another guy used only one but controlled it's path in the water with arrows. Another used the cryonis rune make a ice thingy in the middle of bridge and crossed with good ol' platforming. Another used the magnesis rule to bring a long board he found somewhere else and placed it over the broken bridge. Another guy cut a log, jumped on it and let the current take him close to the bridge.
There are lots of other "puzzles" with open ended solutions like that.
Using lateral thinking and free ambient interactions to do stuff and explorate sounds nice.

>inb4 shill

What's the appeal? Why would you pay $60 for a Mario game? Aren't they all kinda the same 2D/2.5D platforming with just a handful of new powerups? The last time I played a Mario game was on my GBA.

There was none.
Your pic related was made by unpaid interns and it shows. "dah dah dah" music, stupid levels and retarded platforming.
An offense to the Super Mario Brothers series

I got it for free with my system. It was way better than NSMBWii which I DID pay for.

>stupid levels and retarded platforming
what does this even mean
it's one of the best 2D mario games

To people who haven't been playing Ubisoft games for the past 10 years, it will seem innovative and new.

I bought Captain Toad instead. Only $40 for what ended up being 80 levels and the best puzzle/platformer since Donkey Kong 94.

I don't know, I played through Far Cry 3 and I didn't see anything from what this guy said

Zelda with the open world aspect
They should have done it long ago, nothing can go wrong

>They should have done it long ago
They did. That's what Zelda pioneered in its early games.

Tradition.

open world

How bout you watch one of the many trailers and find out. If you can't understand the appeal, then you're just a blind fanboy assmad you don't get to play the game.

The only thing I can imagine going wrong with it is if the game doesn't give you a good enough reason to explore and find interesting ways to get around situations. The past games have been pretty good with this because heart pieces are the ultimate reason to explore any zelda game (besides MM) but with this game it seems that you get yellow heart from food buffs and I haven't seen any indication of there being permanent ways to increase health

not open at all; it's very linear, in fact.

That's not Zelda 1

Might as well say TP is an open world game

This is mostly true, but there are some dungeons you have to do earlier than others. You have to do the pendants in the correct green, then blue, then red order and once you get to the dark world you have to do the hammer dungeon first before you can do others.

>open world
So just like Zelda 1?
You're fucking retarded

Link to the Past is the best early Zelda game.

This
Sup Forums doesn't like it but it's the second coming of Christ to enough people to succeed

Wrong again.
Best early Zelda is Link's Awakening

>Sup Forums suddenly likes open world

But Sup Forums always liked Gothic 2

shut up bitch

Even if you don't like it, how can you NOT see how this appeals to people? Are you autistic OP?

Literally an adventure game masquerading as a RPG. All the devs loved point and clicks.

Open world != free roaming. That is an open world. But its not total free roaming like Zelda 1.

Trails in the Sky
Trails of Cold Steel
Yakuza

I'm not sure what you're trying to imply with more character, but the NPCs from the games I've mentioned actually have stories of their own and in Yakuza's case, some of the random npcs even have a recurring storyline which unfolds through successive games either through the subquests or the main quest.

The Trails series actually has a unique name for every single NPC in the game. Most of them even have their own little subplots which aren't even important to the story. It's just flavor dialogue to make the Trails games feel more alive & interactive.

Zelda games have always had very shallow characters. There's a fucking town in Ocarina of Time who only exist to serve the Royal family of Hyrule. That's their only goddamn personality trait. In Trails or Yakuza, the NPCs have such detailed personalities that simply walking to a different block will feel as if you're immersing youself within a different culture within a subculture.

Zelda's NPCs are far more charming & memorable, but that's due to their simplicity. Do Zelda characters have more character? No I don't think so because they all have paper-thin backgrounds. A random NPC from any Trails game would require several pages of background lore just to describe them.

>Nintendo polish+open word game design.
Remember all those Ubisoft sandbox games people like comparing BotW to are cash grabs made on a 1.5-2 dev cycle, while BotW was delayed for a year to add substance to its world.
and port it to the Switch

Sup Forums is filled with causals who burn out on a game genre and declare them universally shit instead varying the genres they play.

these days, when people talk of open world games, they generally mean free roam.

These days, no one knows what anything is. So you have to clarify.

i know what some things are

if enough call free-roaming "open world", then it'll fit that new definition. In fact, it basically already does by this point.

>this argument again
A bunch of people call Zelda and RPG. Doesn't make it one.

>Ubisoft crap
>Shit visuals

Dropped.

See

>comparing RPGs and story-heavy elements to action RPGs with decent stories.

It's the first open-world game that isn't trying to be edgy.

Think about it. Every open world game until now (RDR, GTA, Elder Scrolls, Witcher, etc.) has tried to out-edgy the last. Whores, killing, "you can be evil" bullshit. This game is just pure exploration and fun without the constant posturing of edginess.

You sound like a complete retard.

You sound like a beta orbiter right now. You're probably a cuck too

You sound like a beta orbiter right now. You're probably a cuck too

>It's the first open-world game that isn't trying to be edgy.
You do realize open world games started before the PS3 era, right?

I'm not a cuck, you are!

I'm guessing you haven't even played MM at all? Because the way way you discover the stories of the minor characters in that excels over any other game.
