My ouya story:

>Backed for the limited edition + extra controller
>Max regret and get a full refund
>they send it me anyway as a gift
>get 10 dollar code
>get 140 dollars worth of 10 dollar codes by watching the backer comments and reddit as people gove them out in anger.
>get 150 bucks worth of free games
>ouya team sends me a t shirt snd a thank you letter, hand written.
>put ds emulator on my ouya and play animal crossing on the tv.

I enjoyed my ouya.

Your phone can out-perform it.

And Switch probably can't

>>ouya team sends me a t shirt snd a thank you letter, hand written.

to make a successful console, you either need

-great first party games
or
-support from great 3rd party devs

ouya had these:

youtube.com/watch?v=mWFL-3PbV5U

youtube.com/watch?v=sD0jKUhXFDI

Nobody wanted to make games for the thing since Steam is the place for indies to market themselves.

I don't have the note anymore, but here is the shirt.

The entire concept? I can't believe this thing actually fucking existed, and that people thought it was a good idea

>With Ouya we created a revolutionary controller that has even a touchpad!
>But the PS4 also has a touchpad
>...Yeah!

I love this video.

Ouya actually did it first.

I think the woman tried to imply only Ouya had it, which prompted the journo to awkwardly precise the PS4 had it too. Can't remember the exact dialogue, but the woman (was she the lead designer or something?) seemed pretty clueless about the industry she was trying to make business into

She used to own ign or something I think.

Someone post those sad Ouya-tan comics.

Dont bully Ouya-tan! She's had a hard life...

The fuck is that?
Iv never heard of this thing, probably why it failed

Set expectations extremely high, under-delivered expectations massively. Think No Mans Sky of the hardware world.

Besides having no games, it also had a bad case of input lag.

>implying supra mayro kratt isn't a GOTY

>mfw my roommate backed this on kickstarter with $150 and told me it would be the next big gaming thing
He's generally pretty smart about a lot of this shit which is why it confused me so much, the only thing I ever saw him use it for a couple months later was playing episodes of Attack on Titan.

I never understood why people were so extided for the Ouya. It was like some weird group think situation.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA

television

>thank you letter, hand written.
They probably did it to save money from print job.

I would rather you make a gem that gets under-represented but known as a solid indie novelty console than a tryhard paradigm shift that spreads too thin and fails.

If I were making an indie CONSOLE, I'd try to make it high quality, slap a $200 price tag on it, and wrangle up the best indie devs I know for development to try to establish some strong launch titles/franchises. Think making the Ouya around 2013/14 and securing an early release of Undertale or Shovelknight.

I'll never have the money for it, but I'd do something like that. An indie console for indie games. Try to make it as developer-friendly as possible. Watch over production greenlights like a fucking hawk. No shovelware.

>television
>Television
>teleVision
>televisioN

it's a decent media box but that's about it. there are better alternatives right now tho

Stop shilling your fucking videos crowbcat

It'll be even worse because everyone will ridicule you for high price tag, even top manufacturer like nintendo & sony still have some people told their hardware is being too pricey.
There's no way indie shovelmachine can even compete and have place on the market, their only appeal is being cheap or offer niche feature that'll make them unique and able to stand out in the middle of the fight.

nice

At least the the Ouya Tan stuff is great that the only reading thing about it
I still have my Ouya

>What went so terribly wrong?
Literally nothing? It become the best joke of the year.

I'd just have to take it on the chin. I wouldn't want to sell a garbage console and would hope the price gets lowered with enough volume anyway, but as an indie developer there would be no way in hell to go super cheap without BEING super cheap, if you know what I mean.

I'd want my console to be capable of functioning well and being reliable. I don't need it to be a powerhouse in compared to the Big Three/PC, but I need it to be an optimized device.

If few people buy it initially because of the price but it's actually done well, it'll get positive buzz and a price reduction might be possible later given sufficient volume. If it's cheap and the first people that buy it only rave about how it's a piece of shit, you could be charging $20 and it wouldn't matter because nobody's going to buy it.

I'd rather it be mocked for the price tag but be a solid device than lure in a bunch of people with cheapness only to piss them all off.

Bad focus.

There is a market for those mirco-consoles since some manufacturers are still interested in them, but Ouya was handled very badly, business-wise.

They've had that fund that gave everybody who made a game for Ouya some money in front, well most people took that money and made half-arsed attempt at unity game afterwards. Had their implemented some QA over them, and made them work on games Ouya could actually play then the platform may have had some decent games and be that niche console. Instead they've had shoddily made games that were 3d, sure but also ran at 16 fps. Had those be simple, casual games, 2d platformers, on rails shooters, things like that, but good and it would get the audience made up from people like my father who liked games on NES but doesn't like games nowadays because of controls that are too elaborate, mechanics that are too deep for playing the games once a week for 2 hours and so on and so on. Basically the people Wii and mobiles normally have, so yeah give a cheap console for them to playing those things in front of TV, they would like it, probably.

Instead they've got neckbeard manchildren who thought they're gonna play Skyrim on it to pre-order it through backing their campaign and nobody else cared about it enough to buy it after it launched.

>put ds emulator on my ouya and play animal crossing on the tv.

what how

The buzz will not spread by itself, you will still need a good launch title to go with it, it's one of many problem ouya have.
Since it's indie-oriented, it's hard to bait interest because the developer who will work on your software composed by many literal who, as opposed by the giants who can easly grab big name by their side.

Some people will buy the console, but even the buzz is generated, it'll be small enough to warrant the word will stop spreading before it's getting big.
You need more than a functional hardware & acceptable price tag to make console survive, simply because there's too much competitor out there right now.

>Phone market's hardware grows at crazy speeds
>Last year's phones are nigh obsolete
>New games and Android OS are designed for new phones and work badly on old ones
>"Let's make a console with hardware of current mobile phones!"
>"Yes! And with no touchscreen!"
I called it when I first saw it. The backlash actually caught me by surprise. What did people expect?

>What did people expect?
Fedora bunch think it's cool because entire hardware cater to their niche indie segment.

...

>kikestarter
>indie
>television, television, television
>android based
It's already disaster on the top of paper, even more jumbled with their business practice.

but what about second party

>The new playstation 4 controller has a touch pad
>That's true. They could build it for that
Literally what did she mean? Build what for what?

>Literally what did she mean?
That she don't know shit about the industry, obviously.
>saying television bunch of times more than needed

kickstarter console that was supposed to play mobile games? it cost like $100 or and had phone-tier specs
IIRC every game in its store HAD to have f2p elements

You can watch porn too in there.

>IIRC every game in its store HAD to have f2p elements
This was dropped very quickly.

SomethingAwful backed it.

SIXTY BUCKS

...

That's what I meant about cooperating with indie devs. To get launch titles.

It had three time as many good exclusives as the PS4. Which oddly enough ends up being the same number

It had 3 exclusives?

Which Ps4 exclusive is the good one?

Please say Bloodborne so I can laugh.

how cute

He's saying it had 0 you idiots.

Uncharted 4

Wow, someone failed math class in junior school

I would laugh to anyone who wear that.

I know that, which is why I was responding to the first guy on his assumption.
