It's not very deep and its not very fun for anyone who's ever played fighting games or other sword fighting games
I've played in every alpha and have had an above 90% duel winrate in all of them (even had 100% in the second alpha) here's how it goes down.

>Guard breaking is supposed to combat blocking however the tech window to counter this is huge compared to games like Tekken or Street Fighter, making it a non issue
>Parry window is also massive which gives you a free frame advantage swing when you block an attack, rewarding defensive play
>There are certain characters who get rewarded EVEN MORE for parrying like the Orochi, The Lawbringer and the Warlord. Giving you free damage for simply blocking attacks.
>This makes the game incredibly defensive at a high level as attacking first is almost a disadvantage, turning the game into a circle strafe of guard breaks and "You swing first, no you swing first"
That's my two cents anyway. I will be trying it again however and I sure hope they've somehow fixed the meta for this beta, but I doubt it.

I agree, someone did a rough estimate of frames for the game during the last alpha. Light attacks took around 30 frames before becoming active, and heavies were around 36-40 frames.

They need to seriously speed the game up, bring in more target combos and overhaul the stamina system if they want to break the defensive meta.

I find the game fun, don't get me wrong, but it is very shallow and easy to become competent.

I feel like it could be a game that bridges the gap between a fighter and the sword fighter/brawlers, but right now it's just not there.

In the very first alpha the guard break had a tiny break window and was pretty quick, more similar to a Tekken grab. Hopefully they revert it back to that.

If they give everything faster framedata everything will just devolve into light attack spam.
Tekkens active frames also come out slower because it's a 3D fighter, you can't really blame the deves for this.

Tekken's startup frames typically range from 10-20 frames. Jab spam isn't a problem in that game because of poor damage and frame advantage.

Right now the only thing worth a damn in FH is the guard break, because it gives an opportunity for a free hit and is pretty damn fast compared to the rest of the moves.

As for combos, the Warden was one of the characters considered underpowered last alpha because of his lack of target combos as well. The biggest suggestion for him by far was to get a heavy->light string for mixups.

If by more you expect 30 combos per character then quite right, it's stupid. However, a handful here or there on the characters that need them is not going to destroy balance of the game.

I was messing around with him in duel mode last beta and I feel like I could really fuck some people up, besides some terrible matchups like the Nobushi

the reason you can continue to pressure is because of the target combos, heavies with no follow up are pure shit and easy as hell to parry

You realise Tekken is a game built on the concept of target combos right

As far as I saw last technical the touchup was a visual marker on the top light attack and a slower tackle. Hardly fine when his main issue is a significant lack of options when out-ranged.
The Conqueror is a mess as well, barely any stamina with no guaranteed followups to any offensive pressure. The only thing of note is the shield charge after the heavy which is easy as hell to dodge and punish.

I'm more worried about them removing 3 characters outright for this test. Their track history so far has been to nerf anything good into the ground, and that has devolved the game into a very defensive meta centered around guard breaks and parries/deflects.

The whole point of target combos is to create fluidity in the game's attacks. Take a look at the Warlord in the beta and tell me that a heavy->heavy is fluid and feels good.

It sounds like the general problem is the lack of proper pressure and it would fix that problem.

To be fair Warlord was the most retarded pieces of shit hero you could play last test once you got over his learing curve.

Who is asking for 15-20 target combos? The amount that the Lawbringer/Warlord have are perfectly fine. The problem is not everybody has that, particularly the Conqueror and Shugoki who had around 3.
The Kensei is a nice way to look at the strings - Only a couple of target combos but lots of varied ways into them. It gives him a level of depth that a character like the Warden simply does not have.

Warlord was a better Conqueror in all forms except damage. His biggest problem was having a superior block on the light attack, making it near impossible to attack him without baiting a whiff or guard breaking. That still doesn't change the fact that his strings outside of full block are worthless and you're better off spamming headbutt and the full guard heavy.

Conq is all about dat throw distance. Get your fundamentals and match-up knowledge squared away and mind game or parry your way into guard breaks and wallbounce faggots. You can even brutalize people in corners because if they don't stumble as far after the heavy, because of walls, the shield bash will connect faster making the window where they can dodge it much smaller. If a Conq gets a heavy on you with your back to a wall the shield bash is undodgeable and is another free light or heavy if you wallbounce again.
