Fuck you Sup Forums. I avoided this game ever since it came out because HURR MUH INDIE TRASH and HURR MUH BAD FANBASE. I finally played it last week and it is one of the best games I've ever played in my life.
>fresh new battle system breathing life into a format as old as turn-based battles >character development millions of times better than any RPG in the past fucking decade save maybe the Legend of Heroes games >goofy humor that somehow manages to reference memes without being cringeworthy >story that uses the fact that it's a video game to create an experience that isn't just a series of playable action scenes in a CG movie that you watch between gameplay >11/10 soundtrack that covers a wide range of instrumentation, setting it apart from your average generic "retro" soundtracks by not relying exclusively on chiptune >no filler whatsoever >huge amount of secrets to find >rewards you for multiple playthroughs with new dialogue and scenes fleshing out the story and characters even more >makes your choices actually feel important in a way that 99% of RPGs today utterly fail to
In a time of ridiculously bloated RPGs like Final Fantasy, The Witcher 3, Skyrim, etc. that go for pretty graphics or massive scale at the expense of tight, compelling narratives and a likeable cast, Undertale impressed me despite how jaded I've become with video games. This is a fucking masterpiece and I'm never listening to Sup Forums again.
Its not a masterpiece Its not perfect Its just good. The music is nice too.
Bentley Carter
It's not perfect for sure, the gameplay outside of battle is pretty bland. But the way it's all presented, and the strength of the story, completely makes up for that to the point where it's still a masterpiece. Perfection doesn't exist, and its strengths outweigh its weaknesses so much that they are relatively insignificant. A masterpiece isn't the same as perfection.
Camden Bailey
You missed it when the game came out and there was nothing but nonstop threads about Undertale for the better part of a month. Sup Forums was in love, but then the "it's popular so it sucks" mentality came down hard. Sonic-tier fanbase appropriation didn't help either, but still.
Asher Jones
That shit put me off the game until very recently, it's a damn shame because the game really is pretty good. The fanbase fucked a lot up, wouldn't say it's sonic-tier but they sure fucking tried to be
Jacob Foster
Never listen to Sup Forums, the most vocal people on here don't even play games, let alone the ones they constantly shit on.
Chase Ramirez
>listening and taking ANYTHING said on here seriously
Jacob Brooks
Half of your points are just opinions. My opinion is that the soundtrack was a 7/10 at best and you need to listen to more game soundtracks. You say it references memes without being cringeworthy but I cringed. Getting all the references didn't make me like it more, it made it feel cheap. It's pretty boring and brain dead easy outside of bosses. >huge amount of secrets I suppose if you mean in ratio to the length of the game?
Play more games, homosex.
Colton Ramirez
The story is mediocre, the characters are top tier though. Man, I miss playig this game for the first time, it was such a good experience.
Mason Wright
The Sans battle is the best part of the game.
Zachary Garcia
Any sort of difficulty outside of that fight would have done the game some good
Cooper Rogers
Unsurprising, sounds like a similar situation to Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann on Sup Forums. All I ever saw was Sup Forums shitting on it and then the GameFAQs poll sealed the deal and I just ignored it completely. In a way I'm glad I did since I didn't get spoiled at all and got to experience the full impact of the story, but the way it was being portrayed here just made it sound like a literal meme game with writing on the same tier as Borderlands 2. Instead I got writing that rivals Itoi in a lot of moments.
>My opinion is that the soundtrack was a 7/10 at best and you need to listen to more game soundtracks. I listen to game music almost exclusively, I've heard hundreds of game soundtracks. The way it uses video game soundfonts as though they're their own instrument to complement electric guitars and orchestral strings is fucking masterful in a market filled with games that just use famitracker or some shit to try and emulate an NES soundtrack. Just another example of how it incorporates the fact that it's a video game into its own original presentation.
>You say it references memes without being cringeworthy but I cringed. Getting all the references didn't make me like it more, it made it feel cheap. This I admit is largely subjective, but the references felt much less in your face than I was expecting and just came across as a sort of flavoring to the writing that never was really the focus, just kind of extra seasoning on top.
>It's pretty boring and brain dead easy outside of bosses. The lack of filler and short length keep it from getting boring in my opinion, but I definitely get where you're coming from. I still can't decide if the easiness of the puzzles is a detractor or if it was intentional since the characters themselves set the puzzles and a running joke is that the one doing it is an idiot.
Juan Bell
There is a thing that I hate the most about Undertale: everybody is a monster, but all of the characters act like humans. Outside of the magic attacks, they dont act like non-human creatures.
Liam Garcia
The game has a mild difficulty if you play it without spoiling yourself on the "proper" way to play it.
Jack James
On this fight right now and its been kicking my nuts.
The Undying was pretty tricky, nothing on Sans level but it can fuck you up pretty well. Also cements her as best character
Levi Reed
>I suppose if you mean in ratio to the length of the game? I do, this game to me is the perfect length. A game should only be as long as its ideas and concepts allow. Each boss presents a new spin on the battle system and when those ideas reach their largest extreme, the game is over. Density > breadth, and the game is one of the most dense RPGs I've played.
>Play more games, homosex. I've been playing games my entire life, which is why I'm so blown away with Undertale since it relies so heavily on turning established mechanics and tropes on their head.
Carter Parker
I never fought him, is it worth doing a genocide run just for this fight?
Isaiah Martinez
I took that as part of the point, to show monsters and humans aren't so different or are in some ways monsters are more "pure" than humans.
Parker Fisher
Him and Undyne are probably the best fights in the game and really shine only on Genocide
Asher Perry
first half of the game was actually pretty good, but that second half is so bad and the true ending was even worse.
I almost enjoyed it. Genocide was only good for the optional bosses and core theme is better, but every ending for the game is really cringy.
Dominic Green
>liking furfag acceptance the game
Carson Cooper
The endings do 4th wall breaking better than any game up to this point, I think you're just autistic.
Justin Brown
This has been a weekly thread since it came out. >Fuck you Sup Forums I shouldn't have listened >*reasons its good* >I hate you Sup Forums Then everyone else says >Yeah I know, its just the fanbase Its getting old
Dylan Morris
tl;dr >>>/tumblr/
Hunter Wood
Speaking of tumblrshit one of the best things about this game is that it has tons of gay relationships and a gender non-specific protagonist without beating you over the head with it at all. I fucking hate SJW shit but the way they did it in this game didn't detract from the game at all, I was really impressed.
Gavin Gray
Sans calls the protagonist a chick several times in certain routes
Hudson Stewart
Wait he does? I thought he was referring to Toriel in the Genocide run
Henry Gomez
>listening to Sup Forums
Owen Richardson
How is Undyne different in Genocide? The pacifist ending was so good that I legitimately feel terrible for wanting to do genocide, especially when you open the game back up and flowey tells you to not reset everything and just let them live in peace.
Jackson Reyes
But... he doesnt...
Charles Nguyen
>giving a shit about in-game "relationships" >>>/tumblr/
Connor Turner
why are you so angry at Sup Forums when you chose not to form your own opinion until now?
Hunter Torres
She bgets filled with DETERMINATION and becomes Undyne the Undying (one of only two actual bossfights in the route) and gets a cool theme with ZUNpets
the best thing about it was the combat system which was new and kinda fun, rest was meh
the soundtrack was nice as well but overall i'd say it's not worth its price, i'm glad i pirated it
pic unrelated
Zachary Morgan
>caring about characters in an RPG This, RPGs are supposed to be about scavenging endlessly and shitty inconsequential dialogue choices.
Anthony Sanchez
He's gunna take you seriously and think hes right
Luis Brown
i know you're being sarcastic but you're actually right
Lincoln Wilson
>She bgets filled with DETERMINATION and becomes Undyne the Undying That sounds fuckign awesome, she was already my favorite character in neutral and pacifist routes. Also the implications of that are pretty interesting knowing what determination is. I wasn't expecting that extra dungeon under the lab at all on my second playthrough.
Christopher Edwards
I was the same but fuck it why not
Undyne realises if you get past her your a threat to pretty much everything, she dies in one hit but refuses to stop fighting just to buy everyone time to escape, she's the only boss that takes more than one hit and she takes a fucking while to beat down and will royally fuck you up the first few times Just something you didn't see much of in her character on a Pacifist run, all the characters come off much better in Genocide as they try to stop you.
Papyrus is the closest I came to resetting
Nathan Foster
>fresh new battle system XD
Jaxson Cooper
>Fresh new battle system Literally just a golf mini game and bullet hell mini game.
>Character development millions of times better than any RPG in the past fucking decade. What garbage games have you been playing.
>Story that uses the fact that it's a video game to create an experience that isn't just a series of playable action scenes in a CG movie that you watch between gameplay. Just because it's dialouge is done in classic rpg and VN style doesn't make it better than cutscenes or anything special.
>11/10 soundtrack It's not 11/10 good you pleb. But I will say that it is damn good.
>No filler whatsoever. Fair point but the game is relatively short.
>Huge amount of secrets to find. Not really you can find them pretty easily if you aren't just following the main path and actually explore.
>Rewards you for multiple playthroughs with new dialogue and scenes fleshing out the story and characters even more. Well the pacifist ending is pretty much locked up until the second playthrough and the one of those playthroughs (the genocide one) is absolutely garbage and so goddamn boring. It doesn't matter that the playthrough isn't supposed to be rewarding, it doesn't excuse making the best boss be locked behind the worst path in the game.
>Makes your choices actually feel important Not really and not to mention you don't have that many choices to begin with.
I enjoyed this game a lot but anyone who thinks this game is a 10/10 masterpiece is a tool who blindly ignores its flaws and hasn't played many legitimately good games.
Josiah Lopez
Name another turn-based RPG that uses bullet hell for its battle system, I'll wait.
Isaiah Brown
so what you're saying is that it uses an old, pre existing battle system? and not a fresh new one?
Grayson Flores
Those mechanics have never been used in a turn-based RPG. It is a new mix of genres.
Carter Perez
moving the goalposts i see
Gavin Hughes
You didn't answer his question and you're moving the goalposts
Juan Moore
Those mechanics have not been used in a battle system. It is a new battle system. Not to mention it stays fresh by turning into a platformer, game of frogger, etc. at different points. Your argument is basically "shmups exist therefore it isn't a new battle system" which is retarded because shmups are not RPG battle systems.
Blake Evans
>HURR MUH INDIE TRASH >HURR MUH BAD FANBASE You're the retard who chose to avoid the game just because it was indie or had a bad fanbase. I don't know why you would take buzzwords and issues unrelated to the actual game itself seriously. There have been quite a few threads speaking positively about the game aside from a couple of shitposters, and if you were around on the game's demo and release days, you would know Sup Forums loved it a lot at the time.
Hunter Price
>mother battle system with an added minigame wow so original
Matthew Brooks
>the main battle mechanic >a minigame I don't think you know the meaning of that word, user.
Parker Davis
It plays absolutely nothing like Mother. Mother is just a DQ clone with timed button presses added for 3.
Jordan Thomas
The only thing worse than people comparing this game with Mother is people comparing this game with Lisa
Anthony Wilson
It definitely has a lot of Mother references and influences in the visuals department but the gameplay couldn't be further from it.
