ITT: Games you wish more people played/talked about.
Even with the AlephOne source port, I've rarely ever seen the Marathon trilogy get brought up, even over on /vr/. It's a shame cause these games are great classic FPS's.

Most interesting game on the Megadrive
How are they compared to other FPS classics?
Are weapons projectile-based or hitscan? What about enemies?
How's the level design?
The Heretic/Hexen series.
Marathon's nearly the top of my backlog now, just behind Strife and Powerslave.

>How are they compared to other FPS classics?
If you're a fan of Doom and Duke3D, and enjoy classic FPS games in general, you'd probably enjoy the Marathon games. The first one feels a bit dated but it's still pretty fun, but things really pick up with Marathon 2 (which, IIRC, is the most popular of the trilogy). You'll have to use the AlephOne source port to play, and one drawback is that the mouse movement feels a bit sluggish, not quite as smooth as other games like Doom.
>Are weapons projectile-based or hitscan?
Mix, the bullet weapons are hitscan, while the fusion pistol, grenade launcher (assault rifle alt fire), and rocket launcher are projectile based. There's also dual wielding for some weapons, and some enemies will be weak to certain weapon types (such as wasps being weak to fusion blasts or the flamethrower being strong to unarmored enemies.)
>What about enemies?
Mostly projectile based, and the hitscanners are mid-tier enemies. The most common enemies you run across are melee/projectile enemies.
>How's the level design?
First game's level design is a bit simpler and not as detailed, but the levels are fun, varied, and unique from one another. The second game's level design is a lot more pretty and detailed, there's more outdoor and "alien" maps (as opposed to mostly sci-fi tech ship in the first game), and map complexity picks up pretty well. Great atmosphere with the dynamic sound system and room lighting, the games feel pretty high-tension and stressful for me to play. I'm only a few levels into 3 now so I can't judge it as well, but it seems pretty similar to 2 so far.
Thanks for the answer, gonna download the source port now.
I'd play through it if somebody made Aleph One on par with something like Gzdoom.
>30 fps lock
>panning vertical look
>can't change fov with a simple console command
I grew up with Halo and went backwards to play the games that inspired it after Halo 3 came out. I can play Blood in Dosbox with the vertical look disabled because it can actually run in high framerate. But my stomach can't handle fake vertical look. Also Gzdoom is the only source port I've found where you can actually get mouselook(especially vertical) to really feel good, and even then you have to set vertical mouselook to half amplitude. Eduke32 doesn't get close either.
So many old games need source ports and interface overhauls, just with those the games shine as well as modern ones.
Oh yeah, and Marathon 1 has a really good OST, but 2 and 3's levels lack any music in favor of the aforementioned ambient sound system for atmosphere purposes. It's a bit disappointed cause I came to love the first game's tracks, and the themes for 2 and 3 sound so good that it makes me wish for a full OST. The music makes some of 1's levels feel eerie and immersive, but the sound system in 2/3 can make things even more eerie and immersive if you've got headphones on.

And enjoy the games, user! Glad I could interest you in them.
3 had several incredibly crazy levels. Wait till the final one.
Also this has to be one of the only marathon threads I have seen
I refuse to sell my Wii U and get a Switch unless this gets a port. It deserves better.
It will be playable on PC via Cemu real soon.
Really would love to see people playimg galactic conquest on Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption again!
Playing through the Hexen expansion right now, pretty fun and I can't wait to try out Hexen 2.
Mole mania deserves more attention
I love the Marathon series. There's a surreal sense of isolation that really appeals to me. The lore is pretty interesting if you go deep into it.

Damn, I'm surprised a website like that is still around and being updated 21 years later.

Heh.
Deathkings is definitely the peak of the series. Hub/level design is top notch and it removes useless enemies like Centaurs, rather it replaces them with Slaughtaurs, and sprinkles in the lesser used monsters from the base game, the wendigos and reivers. I only wish it added new weapons or a new class.
i liked this quite a lot

Infinity is mechanically the wackiest video game story ever told
Is it true Halo3 was really just a Marathon 1 prequel?
It's a really great little game, overshadowed by the SNES version.
This.
It was a proper RPG while the SNES version is like a point and click adventure. Loved assembling a team of runners. I enjoyed working my way up from simple package runs in the slums to full on raids on corporate strongholds. The matrix was fun to zoom around in, fuck that black ice melting my programs.
It needs a modern remake. Those newer games tried but just didn't scratch the same itch.
Unreal for sure, SotS.
Yeah, man. Going around town talking to people in bars, picking up the randomly generated runs and shit, and progressing in the story at your own pace.
It was super open-ended. I remember just doing shadowruns and dicking around the map for hours, customizing my gear and stealing data on random Matrix servers. We really need a remake, or at least a new Shadowrun game that follows the same formula.
The demo for marathon 1, was literally my first FPS. Life changer. Good games. First to use mini map radar also.
Metal Arms
The Marathon trilogy as clunky as fuck compared to Doom, Heretic, and Duke 3D. Their level designs are horseshit, their gunplay feels messy and unsatisfying, and Infinity's plot is a retarded mindfuck.
I tried to get into these games a couple times already, but every time I did I wished I was playing Doom instead.
They should consider improving the port, but maybe if they do it won't be the same for current fans already used to it, so I don't know if that's a good idea after all.
Hell yeah, I loved Metal Arms.
Yeah OP I played the shit out of the Marathon series and I still pick em up once in a while. Never beat 3, maybe someday I'll get on that. I'd recommend the series to anyone who likes an exploration-based retro FPS. The amount of hidden stuff continues to blow my mind every time I go back. Thanks for making the thread
