They are all worth playing if thats what you are asking.

In my experience SH1-3 are the must-plays.
I am playing through SH4 now for the first time, and while there are things I like about it (the apartment is pretty cool actually), there are a LOT of design decisions that are really aggravating me, so I'd put it into the "maybe play if you want to" category.
I can guarantee you will be saying after several SH games "why the fuck did they get rid of the tank controls?"

Silent Hill (PS1, also available via download on PS3 and Vita)
Silent Hill 2 (PS2, also available in Greatest Hits edition which has extra content)
Silent Hill 3 (PS2)
Those 3 are the trifecta, and the best survival horror trilogy of all time. If you're feeling like you want more of Team Silent (the guys who made this excellent trilogy), play:
Silent Hill 4 (PS2)
That's it. Do not play any other Silent Hill games. DISCLAIMER: I have only played these on PS2, which was their initial platform. There are PC versions about, for which you want to use pic related.
Last thing: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES PLAY THE SILENT HILL COLLECTION (PS3/360). It is pure shit, and the patch did NOT "fix it."
