DQ8 thread. Why aren't you playing this game?
For those of you who are, how far in are you? I just got to Simpleton. Love this remake. Really nostalgic to go through it again after so many years.

just beat geyzer, not going too fast but im taking my time.
took me awhile to adjust to the game since im so used to the ps2 version buts its still good and ////comfy////
I just beat geyzer too, I just returned the crystal ball to Kalderasha.
I really like it, I only beat it once a 5 years ago when I borrowed it from my brother so it is nice to actually own it now.
right now just stuck at the huge calamari. And finals in a week. So I will play later. Party level 9, talentpoints sword and axe.
>Why aren't you playing this game?
I beat it on the PS2
You can probably beat him if you level up just 1 more time, makes a huge difference.
Just got cockblocked at the Abbey. I just want to take pictures, man...
What's the max number of skill points can each character get in this game?
The fuck does Trode have to do with the caption you fucking newfag gave him in your pitiful attempt at meme humor?
It's still in the mail, as I bought it online from fucking eb games.
I'm playing DQ7 at the moment though
unlimited due to skill seed drops
Had to restart my save.
This just in, Alchemy pot is even more broken.
Everything is fucking instant, and the game tells you what mixes with what. If that wasn't retarded enough, the game allows you to make multiple things at once.
Remember the rose-root trick from the original? Now you can do that infinitely jesus fucking christ square.
Yeah, level 10 would be better. And don't forget to Psych Up Yangus while healing with Hero.
Just got to Peregrin Quay. I've been playing slow because I remember the game having a few missable events and It's been so long since I last played it that I forgot most of them. I also know that I'm gonna have problems with the mini medals.
It looks and sounds like shit compared to the original, but the QoL changes make up for it. I'm happy to be playing it again.
What's the original trick?
I thought that would happen as soon as I heard of the instant Alchemy pot. I don't know if I should be glad or mad.
>Mix Healing Herb with Healing herb
>Get Strong herb (good healing)
>Mix strong herb with healing herb
>Get Rose-root (Great healing)
Sell for 80G a tidy profit and gives you something to do with the alchemy pot in between gear crafting
New version
Mix all your fucking healing herbs together and sell that shit for massive profit.
What boggles me is that they didn't think to nerf sell price.
I think the only big missable thing is a dungeon that you can only access if you head back to the casino town at a specific time
the game is a remake with added stuff though so more missables could definetly exist better to be safe then sorry
>paying money for a censored game with inferior audio
>falling for the censorship meme
Do you know if there are triggers to get the new ending? I think I saw a video with a new scene with Jessica in Alexandria. I'd hate to miss the new content by accident, even if I'm gonna feel like shit for cucking best horse.
US patched cia where?
...
>preferring shitty MIDIs to orchestral music
The EU patched cia is region free, why do you care?
on 3dsiso, where else
>complain about audio quality on a fucking handheld
Is there a save editor yet?
I bought the game to support Square Enix's decision to actually give us Dragon Quest in the west. I hacked my 3ds so I can download the uncensored version and give the cartridge to my brother who has an unhacked 3ds.
>The EU patched cia is region free
It's not. Due to the camera mechanic, the game can't be made region free no matter what.
update on the alchemy pot, apparently selling too many of the same item reduces the sale value of an item.
So leveling up in this game is like in the Ys series where 1 level makes the difference?
Hey there I got the SNES remakes of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 and just beat the first one.
It was okay, didn't have that much of a great time with it but beat it anyway because it was short and I never beat a single old school rpg game.
I read some reviews about the second game and how it's worse in several aspects, more than twice as long and overall just drags on too long.
I was initially told to play through the entire series in chronological order to get a better sense about the overarching story and improvements in each title.
Should I just read a summary and skip to the third one? The fourth one? At what point does the series get objectively good?
the what mechanic?
I love the story and characters of Dragon Quest VIII. The writing is charming, the art is beautiful, the soundtrack is kinda one-note and amateur but it's a live orchestra so ehhh.
THE GAMEPLAY IS HORSESHIT.
It's not difficulty to force on and on and on random battles just to grind up in levels. I did nothing different between my first and second attempts of Geyzer: all I did was grind for an hour in between.
That's not game design, it's a waste of time.
Turn based RPGs are dogshit yes.
Press start or select and you can take pictures of shit in the game.
How does it compare to the PS2 version? Are the graphics even intelligible at that low of a resolution? I remember Xenoblade literally hurt my eyes to look at it.
3 is pretty well loved
IMHO it's at least better than 2
You literally pick your encounters.
The moment you hit level 4 with the hero, it's a breeze. Of course that does not mean that you literally run from encounters.
You can easily become level 6 if you exclusively fight Skippers in the very first dungeon as they give you really good exp for minimal amount of investment.
Or you can descent into a big shitter and buy a boomerang and your first 4hours of gameplay automatically becomes easy mode.
But heck, if skill allocation and party planning becomes your downfall, then you never had any aptitude to these kinds of games.
Because I beat it 13 years ago.
Only the overworld looks garbage.Everything else looks decent on the 3ds screen.
Fucking great.Trying to revive that ship yo and doing monster arena in the meantime
I beat FFIV DS and FFV Advance, I'm no slouch. DQVIII is just bad gameplay.
Which version should I play?
Heard the SNES version is a pretty good remake but aren't there more?
>It's a Jargon
>And two dingalings
>Dingaling calls for help
>Jargon appears
>Dingaling Calls for help
>Jargon appears
>Jargon uses flame breath
>Jessica dies
BRAVELY SIR YANGUS RAN AWAY, BRAVELY SIR YANGUS RAN
II is maybe the worst game in the series. I enjoyed the first half a lot, but the second half is kind of a chore (and has some very bullshit fetch quests). Not a big deal if you skip, but there is something to be said about playing a series in order.
III and IV are big jumps ahead in quality from II. III is a great game for party building, and IV is just a very good, unique RPG for its time.
Just got to Ruined Abbey and grinding Metal Slimes. The camera trick is really nice. Just move it around and enemy icons change to a random different enemy.
Been five minutes, got two so far, might just grind it out a little.
Alchemy trick doesn't work for me. The price changes to the ingredient's.
I want a good JRPG to play. Haven't played one in a long time. My favorite is either TTYD or Xenoblade. Is this worth picking up?
I like the GBC version best. SNES is plenty good too.
Just avoid the mobile version.
You get a good amount of profit, but the price drops fairly quickly.
This was a thing on the PS2 version but nobody ever bothered to sell that many items.
I've been doing this too. I can't fucking stop! It's just too easy, flick the camera around until you get one and it's 1350 EXP.
>Why aren't you playing this game?
Because I played it 12 years ago
This might come as a shock to you but Final Fantasy is actually the easiest big JRPG series around.

You need a hacked 3DS to play this.
What does a different franchise has to do with all this? Final Fantasy with its streamlined party setup has a whole different flair and appeal to it. Maybe you're just not up to Dragon Quest.
Is there a patch for the cartridge version?
Not that I know of. I'm assuming you want to play the cartridge and have the replacement files on your SD card and some technical wizardry replaces them every time you load the cart?
I see this every thread.
Do you not replay old favourites? I must've played Tales of Symphonia and Paper Mario TTYD over ten times.
And now I can replay DQ8 with much more content, new party members, recipes, side quests, costumes etc.
when do i find a spear for the main character? i've been dumping all my points into spear and courage, and so far at alexandria i have not found a spear
ive also been pumping fisticuffs and humanity for Yangus. how do i use his whistle skill?
I beat dq8 for the first time like five months ago, is this worth replaying for the extra content?
I've beaten every other dragon Quest game in English, so I'm guessing no
I havent played any DQ games where do I start?
First time players I can understand. But how the fuck do any of you replay fucking 80 hour+ games? I played this back on PS2 and absolutely loved it but the last thing I ever wanna do is replay it again for any reason.
>does not compute
VIII
You'll buy your very first spear in Port Prospect, the city you'll get to after Alexandria.
>VIII
ps2 or 3ds? I heard the 3ds one looks like shit.
sorry for late reply. thanks! I like the game really much, I thought I wouldn´t because of akira toriyama style. Well it has it´s downsides.
I really wished this would come out for switch, 3ds pad is annoying as fuck.
PS2 unless you like casual shit with awful graphics
If you don't care about chronolocial order play either IV or VIII first
If you do, start with the first one
it's a bit shitty in some areas because it's literally the first console RPG and has some terribly archaic design shit in it. SNES version that's bundled with the first game fixes some of the grinding issues among a few other things.
Second game is pretty much this Read a summary online and go to the third one which is apparently one of the best.
VIII on 3DS looks worse on the world map but that's apparently it and everything looks fine.
Also you're playing it on a small as fuck screen so whatever.
Not really, it's a really refreshing experience with its new camera system (pretty exploitable when combined with the enemy spawn system).
Other than more recipe, broken alchemy, new party members and camera challenges, the only way you can still enjoy a playthrough is if you make a 180° in skill point allocation and maybe try out another meta. (Fisticuff Yangus wrecks everything once you have THin Air)

Complete guide
Im hoping it gets a ps4 port. Still have my special edition of the ps2 version
I'm in Rydon Tower, at the floor where I have to lower the bridge and then put the statue in my place, but the game doesn't allow me to grab the statue.
Am I doing something wrong?
That astounds me. As I said in a previous post, I love replaying old favourites. The JRPGs that defined my teenage years have such a special place in my heart and I replay them every few years. I love going through it all again.
Fuck, I mainly replay games rather than play new ones. And halfway through new games I'm already looking forward to replaying them.
Guess we're just two very different people.
what exactly makes it better regardless of the worse graphics and music in the GBC version?
You have to go back to Alexandria Tower and go to the statue where you first met Jessica. You'll see a special cutscene and get a gem.
I just got to Red's cabin thing and I'm about to go into a labyrinth?
>Buying censored shit
TOP KEK
3DS. It looks fine on a 3DS screen and it has extra shit the PS2 version doesn't have.
If you've got access to both, it's up to personal preference.
I personally love playing long JRPGs on my big TV screen. That said, I already played the game 12 years ago, so I like playing it anew on my 3DS which has lots of extra content. It's just a smaller screen, which is slightly annoying but I don't really mind that much.
How are Red and Morrie anyway?
I assume you're stuck with an active party of four, so who do I switch out when the time comes? I heard Red is a better Yangus but Yangus is bro for life, innit guv?
Enough to max like 2-3 skills I think. Angelo's Skill point progression sucks. Save seeds for him
Just beat it again the year before last. Looking forward to the 3ds version
I had to buy a new SD card so I can download it
fuck you amazon
Loving it again. Just got Angelo, now off towards more adventures. I might actually bench him once I get Morrie/Red.
What's the earliest you could feasibly S Rank the coliseum anyway, to get Morrie? I never bothered with the coliseum on the PS2 version.
More content.
I'm actually having fun with video games again for awhile when playing this.
The music is amazing and the game is so charming.
Have fun Sup Forumsbros!
I'm trying to beat DQ7 before diving in 8. Having trouble with the last boss any anons mind telling me their party line up?.
>buying into the censorship meme
I'd rather have censored dragon quest in the west than no dragon quest at all.
Also the Japanese versions were censored too you, Japan is getting stricter with their ratings. The original music not making it on the western version makes sense because of licensing issues
Gotta say the photo quests are a lot more fun than I thought they'd be.
When do you start getting custumes?
This is like when 3ds users brag about ips when they already decided to play on a handheld with 400x240 max res
Why would there be licensing issues with the OST?
Is there japanese audio?
Composer fucking hates the west.
More likely they had to gut the music for the voiced lines.
Stop this meme, people will take it seriously.
The composed orchestrated the ENTIRE soundtrack for the WESTERN release of DQ8 on PS2. The Japanese didn't get the orchestrated version on the PS2, while we did.
Just got Jessica, will make a lot more progress on my days off.
Great so far, the soundtrack not being orchestral was jarring at first, as was Jessica's new voice, but I've gotten used to both pretty quickly. The refill on HP and MP per level up does make tension a lot less palpable when traveling.
>no random encounters
>shops open at night
>heal at level up
They didn't even try to balance these changes wtf.
